For years, Bill and Hillary Clinton have been the portrait of the American political couple — while of course they've always had their detractors and critics — they've stood as powerhouses both on their own and together. Even before her campaign for president ended, however, to some the election season exposed a less than pleasant underbelly of the Clintons. While Bill and Hill supported Barack Obama, at times it seemed like they were intentionally not putting their hearts in the campaign. For instance when Bill stopped by Letterman he complimented McCain and (as Chris Rock pointed out right after) seemingly avoided saying Obama's name.

The rationale behind Clinton's tepid support could have had something to do with wanting Hillary to have another chance in 2012, but that might be painting the couple far more sinister than we should. They came under fire again this week when they had to deny having told senators to support Lieberman. While in the end the Clintons did rally for Obama, the lack of full-hearted support turned some fans sour. Now that the election is over, do you think this election season caused a Clinton backlash?

Both of the first two. I still like and admire them, but didn't everyone do some things during the campaign that made them look dumb? I'm looking at you Hillary "I'm not going to listen to what economists have to say about the economy" Clinton and Barack "Discount the guns and religion vote" Obama.
1I seriously don't understand what more anyone wanted the Clintons to do. Everyone wasn't scrutinizing Romney and Huckabee's behavior for any little trace of sour grapes (not that I think there was any).
2I think the Clintons have become favorite targets and people transfer a lot of their frustrations onto them. I still like him a lot and her better than I did at the beginning of this election race. They're not perfect but they are interesting.
3Well, I disagree. When Bill was on Larry King, he was nonstop praising McCain. I yelled at him on tv to shut up.
4"Big baby" is the expression I would use. Get over yourself.
I loved and supported Hillary at first, but even she got a bit weird during the campaign. It was easy to transfer my allegience to Obama.
5When they nominated Palin, Hillary could have taken her down immediately, woman to woman, by simply pointing out her inadequacies.
You know implying that they didn't support Obama enough after he became the nominee is stupid. They campaigned for him tirelessly. Especially Hillary. She flew all over the country and headlined more than fifty events. There were some rallys that she didn't even speak at, but just stood by him to lend her support. Every single allegation in the above "article" is unfounded and sort of dumb.
6I know how much you supported Hillary and that may be blinding you to the facts. It must still hurt. It hurts me a little because it was the big chance for a woman to run, and I don't know when that may happen again.
7I actually never liked them until I saw the gracious, classy, and enthusiastic way they handled Obama's nomination. This really seems like an article just designed to generate artificial controversy.
8I'm not talking about during her campaign I'm talking about after it. And exactly what 'facts" are there spoken of above. It's all very vague and the only thing that is specifically talked about it is that they only had "lack-hearted support" of Obama which is completely false. The only reason you didn't hear about how much Hillary and later on Bill were doing for Obama is because everybody couldn't shut up about Palin and it was the only story worthy of the news.
9I agree Jude and won't waste my time with it any longer. Off to my show. Goodnight ladies.
10Maybe you are right, Harmony. Somebody told me that the Clintons were campaigning, but the media would hardly cover it.
11I think they did enough for Obama campaign.
12I think that the media thrives on drama, and so they have tried to create a narrative around them. Hillary did over 100 rallies for Obama, but that didn't fit in the narrative, so most media outlets didn't report on them regularly.
13Agreed, the media did not at all cover how much they supported Obama.
I also wish we could declare a national hiatus from election coverage. It's over!
14I don't care. I love Hilary and Bill. I will always support the both of them.
15I agree with janneth, I felt that way with Bill Clinton during a few of his interviews.
16I still love the Clintons
. I don't get where this article is coming from.
17I think Hillary behaved very good during the last part of the campaign - she was very enthusiastic. I don't think Bill did anything wrong either, they just want to create controversy. I always liked her better than him though.
18no i think that we all still really like her and that in a different campaign year she would have won. i think that people do realize that the campaign trail at times brings out the worst in people and that's something that you just have to deal with. folks that liked her before aren't going to just switch over and start disliking her. the family name is still as esteemed as it always has been.
19I've never been a fan of the Clintons, but I do admire how they raised their daughter in the public eye. Chelesa seemed to turn out alright, so they had to be doing something good there at least.
20One of the best things about this election was that we were guaranteed not to have a Bush or a Clinton in the Oval Office. Now that is a refreshing 'change'.
21This article is sour grapes from the media. There mere idea of discussing if the Clintons did 'enough' for Obama AFTER he won the election is juvenile.
It would be more understandable if this went to press pre-Nov. 4th, but not by much. I agree with most of everyone's assessments: the Clintons were all over the place campaigning, and Hil's supporters were convinced enough by her support that they voted for him.
Clearly, Obama has more important things to deal with at the moment, but I do hope he nips this one in the bud if it starts getting more play.
22i'm a conservative republican. i like hillary and i think bill did a good job as president. they aren't robots. they are entitled to their feelings, and if there is some resentment there because obama got the nomination rather than hillary is anyone surprised?
23According to CNN, Obama met with Hillary yesterday in Chicago!
He is meeting with John McCain in Chicago on Monday.
I like that.
24It's been leaked that she's being considered for Secretary of State. I wonder if he has McCain in mind for anything?
25I never admired them in the first place. and just looking at her makes me kind of bring my breakfast up.
26Exciting things to come, I hope!
27It really depends. If you are a democrat for a Democrats sake i.e. you vote on party lines regardless then it wouldn't matter but if you were a democrat and you were already not so fond of the Clinton's for what was/wasn't said during the primary or your still holding that Monica Lewinsky thing against Bill then it didn't take much for them to get on your bad side. I mean during the primary Hillary Clinton was trying to win, so all the things she said could be used as fuel against her for whatever office she runs for next. And of course there is the group that has an undying love for the Clinton's so they could eat babies, and murder toddlers and they would still love them!
28I admire them both for all of their work and experience in politics, regardless of their mistakes, I respect them and still supporth them 100%.
29The election actually made me like them more. When I saw how gracious they were when Obama won the nomination, I found new respect for them. They worked tirelessly on his behalf and did more than anybody could have expected them to do. It was very classy.
30ilanac- according to an election day poll, Hillary would have won the final election this year by like 11 points. I think I saw that on CNN, but I'm too lazy to look it up...
Either way, we had two great dem. candidates!
31In all honesty, I think that Hillary and Bill Clinton were both surprised by the strength behind the Obama campaign during the primary. So I was surprised by their strange behavior during this campaign. However, they pledged their support to Obama (eventually) and I believe that they gave him that support.
32I would hope that the importance of community and a grass-roots based campaign has made an impression on them, that they need to be just as rooted in politics as in the community at large, to win campaigns.
I love bill i thought he was a good president but hilary to me is a fake! but better than barack
