We all want the same things...love, acceptance, financial security...we just go about it in a different way.

What happened with that guy in the middle's math?

nothing organic. He's saying if you take 52% (Obama's win percentage) - 48% (McCains) you're left with nothing, a country divided.

But if the 52 and the 48 come together, you have 1 whole piece and a country unified.

And that's today's political math 101.

Not only do I disagree with the mathematics, but I disagree with the premise.

The premise is that if the country stands together we are stronger than if we stand divided. (At least that's how I took it). What's wrong with that?

This is a noble idea, but ... I'm thinking of how I would have felt if Bush supporters did this in 2004, and I would not have taken it well. If you just see this as a large-scale football game - i.e., it's about who wins and then it's over - then maybe this could break the ice. But for people who really think Obama will take the country in the wrong direction, it might take a while for things to thaw. Like, more than a week.

But I agree with valancyjane. It's going to be a LOT longer than a week...probably longer than the next 4 years. Most of the people I know on the other side of the aisle...*sigh* it's going to be a strange road with them.

Hopefully there'll be some healing soon, but if there isn't, I won't be surprised.

I hate to be a cynic, but the left has been spewing vitriol and venom since 2000 starting with "Bush stole the election" then to post 911 and the conspiracy theorists. Then with the Iraq war, we were treated to the likes of Reid and Murtha declaring defeat and slandering our soldiers. Traditional family folks wanting to protect the definition of marriage have been called bigots, fascists, and haters. Dick Cheney is the most evil man alive. GW Bush is stupid, GW Bush is the devil, GW Bush is the worst president ever. All the hyperbole, all the drama, it was alot to take for 8 whole years.

Now that your guy won, you're all ready to kiss and make up? How nice for us! Is the venom and vitriol is finished? Would it be the same way if McCain had won? Would republicans still be fascists?

I'm fair enough to acknowledge that the Bush administration has earned much criticism. Abu Graib, Haliburton, PATRIOT ACT, and not vetoing anything for 6+ years easily roll off my tounge as mistakes of the Bush administration. After the bailout bill passed, I finally went into the "dislike" column for the Bush administration. I'm also fair enough to acknowledge that not everyone left of center was responsible for the venom and vitriol that came the way of conservatives. Still, it's a heck of a thing to ask to let bygones be bygones after the last 8 years.

After some cute Facebook joking, some (republican) family members said some horrible things to me and it was personal, after I didn't do anything, those people are very bitter and angry. I know we'll never speak to them again. Some people allow politics to ruin their families, I wouldn't have if it were me, but what can you do?

I basically agree, beavis. It's easier to be gracious and try to make up when YOUR team has won. A lot of the signs are very "cheer up, Obama is what's best for you!" That's aggravating to me.
Still... if someone is going to write how great my 48 butt looks in my jeans, I'm gonna forgive at least him. =D

I liked this one too, regardless of who wins or loses it is the truth. Americans MUST stop letting their political system divide them like this.

I can understand how some on the right feel, and why it will take a bit longer for messages like these to not feel so "oh sure NOW you say that-ish" (that-ish?? anyway..). But in response to "If we had done this in 2004", the fact is nobody did. The fact is that for a long time Democrats will still feel (about 2000 especially) as if things did not go the way they were meant to go. There's about 8 years of simmering anger, indignance, frustration, sadness and embarrassment we had to swallow as the country veered into deeply debatable waters on everything from international policy to wartime conduct and personal rights of her own citizens.

BUT..the left can't go back and change the past. All the left can do is go forward. I MUCH rather see things like this than "HAHAHAHAHAHAHA ITS OUR TURN NOW, MOFUKKAS" type bullsh**, which will just fan flames that need to die down.

This was a very unpopular presidency and government, probably the most unpopular in my lifetime (certainly globally, its unprecedented) and a very tumultuous election - in my eyes, any attempt at an olive branch is welcomed to get the country moving forward.

Beavis, I understand where you're coming from, but I think this is a very different situation. Democrats - and a lot of non-Democrats, too - were frightened by the direction the Bush team was taking the country, and by the lack of information and control that we as citizens had. Our civil and human rights were being decreased at the same time our army was attacking a sovereign country to supposedly "spread democracy" (something we could have used a little more of in the United States in the last eight years). Is Bush the devil, or Cheney the most evil man alive? Absolutely not, and comments like those are, as you said, pointless vitriol and venom that only create divisions in the country. But there's nothing wrong with criticizing a government, and in fact it's one of the basic principles of a democracy.

The point of this site isn't to shut up Republicans, but to give Obama a chance. Bush had his chance, and with it he tarnished the US reputation and alienated a lot of Americans. It's natural to critique him for his mistakes. But Obama hasn't had his chance yet. Complain once he is inaugurated and he does something you disagree with, don't start before he even gets to the White House.

I have to agree that it's going to take more than a week for many of the 48 to "get over it". For those who were frightened by the thought of the direction that Bush would take the country in 2004, that's exactly where several of the 48 are now with Obama.

One of the other comments from 2004 that really rankled, was "He's not my president" from people that didn't vote for Bush. I have been pleasantly surprised to not hear that from any of the 48 I know.(This is not saying that it hasn't been said, but I have not heard it.)

I am willing to give President-Elect Obama a chance. He has inherited a heck of a mess which can not all be blamed on the Bush administration. I have no problem blaming Bush for the things he is definitely responsible for (war in Iraq), but the economic crisis we are in goes back much further than the past 8 years. It is most definitely a bi-partisan mess.

It would have been really nice to see this sentiment expressed before the election, rather than after - especially from those people saying they would leave the country if a specfic candidate didn't win.

Yes, I am bitter and cynical. No, I do not wish evil on Obama or the rest of the country.

It is certainly an interesting site, but it won't cure things in a week. I'm like kranky in that this would have been nice before the election.

Of course, in my beautiful southern state, people are still way too bitter over this. It just makes my head hurt. I'm in the 42, but what's done is done... and now we just need to move on. Maybe this site truly is a step in the right direction.

Its much easier to say we are all Americans and support the president when it is the guy you voted for, so I understand the hurt feelings on the Rep. side. I don't know how I would have responded to a similar kind of campaign after the 2004 election, being that my guy lost.

But we are facing even more challenges now than then, and I would hope that people will give Obama a chance to try to do right by this country and get it back on track.

Including everyone blaming 9/11 on Bush being president (which is absurd since it was ALSO bombed when Clinton was pres) Or even all of the conspiracy theoristas as stated earlier. That was a difficult time for the US, I pray Obama would never have to deal with an attack like that, but I would be curious to see how the media would portray Mr Obama in that situation. We will never forget the way Republicans were treated in the last 8 years, not just Bush. But I will strive to set a better example than the whiny liberals of the Bush Era. I've been jaded (and said my fair share about my thoughts on Mr. Obama), but bring it on Obama... just don't lie to me anymore!

If no one gave him a chance and blamed him for 9/11 then way did he get re-elected? I just didn't see that as the reason people didn't like the Bush Administration, I would think it comes down to are you better off than you were 8 years ago? If you weren't, then you probably voted for the democrat. If not, then you voted for more of the same. Oh and then there is the whole religious right thing, republicans becoming and the Bush Adminstration being ultra evangelical Christian also alienated a bunch of people

I am one of those that faced 8 years of continual disappointment with our government. Anyone that disagreed with Bush and his team of advisers was labeled "unpatriotic" and any chance of healthy debates was shut down (not on the sugar site though thank god). There are VERY few policies from the Bush administration that I agree with and think are good for this country and while I am sorry that so many of those that did not vote for Obama are upset- it is time to really let go and start making this country a better place. I don't agree with the attacking Bush or calling him names at all but I do think not think he was a good president at all and I want to be able to say that without someone attacking me and calling me a liberal fascist.

Here's a thought, if you want us 48ers to get behind your President, you can start by not bashing our Presidents, past, present, or future. If you want us to think positively about your President, make sure your President doesn't do anything that rakes away from our American Dream.

Does every single thread have to be negative??? These are people that are trying to extend the olive branch. So what do you want us to do? Say AHAHAHHAHAHAA F*CKING LOSERS! Is that what you want? Sorry I'm not wired that way. My candidate didn't win either. She lost this summer, but I certainly didn't go onto every single thread pissing and moaning about it.

If folks don't want to unite behind our president elect then you can't make them. And if others want to say that Bush was the worst president this country has ever seen then don't rush to call them unpatriotic, unAmerican, or traitors as Bush supporters have done in the past.

Bush and his supporters didn't give a sh*t about whether people united behind him and his policies in 2004, if Obama does care about this - as well as other Americans - then maybe they better hold their breath because it seems there is still a lot of bitter blood out there and on sugar.

You are correct HF, and that was 4 months ago? We'll get over this election, and we'll go on, but don't expect us to fall in line with this President until we are sure that his "vision" for this country won't be detrimental to our vision. Only time will tell.

I have already been told that some level of rubbing our face in it is acceptable, and that if mccain had won? we would be doing the same....which is untrue and there is the difference between us.

I am not going to whine and cry about BO winning, but I will stand by my beliefs and values and look into the future with hope. I hope he keeps his promises and stops looking back into the "past 8 years" that i have heard over and over during the campaign. Its time to move forward with respect to the past and as a country we all need to be more positive about the future.
