After meeting with his economic advisers, Barack Obama had a substantial meeting with the press. Flanked by the team, as well as Joe Biden, Obama projected confidence and toughness as he spoke of the "greatest economic challenge of our lifetime."

Only three days after the election, Obama outlined his priorities including a rescue plan for the middle class, expanded unemployment insurance, aid to small businesses and local governments, and assistance to the auto industry. He also urged Congress to pass a stimulus package, ASAP.

Noting that the US only has one government and one president at a time, Obama said he will keep the lines of communication open with President Bush. He also said: "I'm confident a new president can have an enormous impact." The president-elect then opened it up for questions. When asked about the search for first dog, Obama said the family was looking for hypoallergenic breed and that “our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but obviously a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me.”
