So what's Senator John McCain to do following his concession to President-elect Obama? Go back to work, of course.
Word is John McCain started addressing his next move and role in the Senate yesterday with his top aides after offering Obama his "goodwill and earnest effort to find ways to come together."
According Newsweek, Democrats want McCain to "mediate solutions to partisan standoffs on key legislation as he did to help avert a constitutional meltdown over judicial confirmations in 2005." Yesterday, Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer said there is a need for "old John McCain, a leader who worked in a bipartisan way."
On the flip side, Republicans are apparently reaching out to keep him in an effort to maintain tight Republican ranks during the next Congress. What do you think McCain should do now, and to what extent do you think he will carry out his promises to Obama?

Forzieri
McCains skills are so needed right now in the senate.
1"mediate solutions to partisan standoffs on key legislation" = be the Dem's b*tch
If McCain does that, I will be very disappionted.
2Haus Frau - I thought what everyone liked about McCain was his ability to reach across the aisle and get things done? I think the bitter, hate fueled McCain we saw during campaigning is not who he is at all.
3"Yesterday, Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer said there is a need for "old John McCain, a leader who worked in a bipartisan way."
Yet he would have been four more years of Bush. Right.
4His concession speech and promise of help and support were very classy, I thought, and he certainly could be extremely helpful in the Senate.
5I think McCain could be a great help for both sides if he sticks by his promise in his concession speech... to focus on his country and his president. If he sticks to his entire campaign motto, 'Country First', then I think McCain will do a great job bringing together Democrats and Republicans. I'd really like to see McCain and Obama work together. I'm still for McCain... I just think he got lost in the campaign and in the end found his way back to what he was.
Oh, a girl can dream anyway.
6I think McCain's record proves that he has always put country first. To me, its Obama that has to prove that he can work in a bipartisan way. McCain has been there, done that.
7Not to sound bitter, but it seems very insincere that now all of a sudden its important to put country first.
John McCain should do whatever he thinks is right, but to expect him to be the Dems' lacky is BS. There is no reason he should be the only one to have to work bipartisanly. This to me sounds like posturing by some disappointed Dems who didn't get the super majority they were looking for.
8I partially agree with you haus. He certainly shouldn't be the only one expected to pick up the bipartisan slack. I think he is in a good position to facilitate that, but to also help lead the Republicans in standing up on certain issues and helping to reach compromises. If by mediate standoffs they mean convince the Republicans to just go along with the Obama administration, then no he absolutely should not be doing that. If it means helping both sides reach a compromise, then yes he can certainly play an important role there.
I think we all need to keep in mind that the disgust many of us felt with Congress for just blindly going along with Bush still applies, even if we like the President better. Congress SHOULD be questioning the President's judgment and duking it out amongst themselves. Bipartisan cooperation doesn't mean just rolling over and even if Dems do have a majority, it doesn't mean the concerns from the Republicans should be ignored. They really need to make sure they don't become what they hated so much from Bush.
9That was my first, evil thought too... one down - three votes to go! It's easy to say you ended bipartisanship when there's no one opposing you.
The Maverick has shown that he does things his way, so I agree with haus - McCain's goingt o vote what he thinks is best, even if it bucks the system.
Oh, how I wish I had a vote in Congress.
10look, what he needs to do right now is cast away any bitterness he might hold (as do other republican key players) and try to work with the dems (as the dems need to make the effort to work with the republicans) to solve the big problems facing the country right now. that's what needs to be done. no hidden agendas. we can only have hope that something like this really happens...
11What he does I think depends more on how his party responds to him than anything - they have to sort out their leadership issues before assigning McCain any role as the Dem's B!tch, which by the way, is not really such a friendly way to put things Haus. We're not asking him to carry our water.
12NOT YET!!!!!!!!
13heheh
14He should take a long vacation in Mexico with Jennifer Aniston
15Pink, NICE.
16Very funny, haus.
17I think he should consider joining the Democratic party and get it over with.
18mccain seemed like that great man he was said to be in his speech. i hope he stays in the senate. i do think that he has some great ideas and will be a great help to President Elect Obama.
19I think it has been pointed out repeatedly, sometimes even by Republicans, about how "the John McCain of 2000" was relatively absent during his campaign. I think the way his campaign was run and the decisions he made have brought down his reputation as someone that works across the isle. He took his middle of the road, maverick style and turned it on its head to try and appeal to the ultra-conservatives.
I think that McCain can shake the dust off of his reputation and reaffirm his legacy by being a leader in the Senate.
Having a stand off between congressional democrats and republicans isn't going to be benefical for either side. I don't think that anyone is suggesting that he become a lap-dog for the democrats. I think that what is suggested is that he work as a republican leader to help push for policy that is appealing to both parties and what will be most beneficial for the american people. Compromise for the greater good. What a beautiful thing.
20Retire, and I did think his concession speech was very gracious.
21"Not to sound bitter, but it seems very insincere that now all of a sudden its important to put country first."
Who isn't putting country first?
I am sure McCain will be happy to work in any role that will be helpful to the country. That doesn't necessarily include being the dems b!tch, but it might include reaching across the aisle.
22I really don't want to picture McCain with, like, nipple clamps and a ball gag, so I am not going to even *think* of him being ANYONE's b!tch, aiiiight?
23i think that this campaign really opened people's eyes to the abilities of all the candidates. anyone who wants to talk badly about the outcome or how the republicans played the game are going to eat their words since we know that mcCain will have a key role in whatever he does, and we haven't seen the last of Palin.
24McCain will be key in bringing the bitter repubs to support President Elect Obama. I think that alot of people who voted Obama respect and like McCain, and do look to him for leadership in the Senate! As a repub, i know that repubs need some good leadership right now!
McCain is a Maverick, he will reach across party lines and do what is best and encourage others to do what is best. and what is best right now is to stand behind the new president and support him! NO MORE BASHING OF ANYONE, JUST COME TOGETHER AND DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THIS COUNTRY! UNITE, DISCUSS, COMPROMISE, PROMOTE GOOD, POSITIVE CHANGE FOR AMERICA.
25John McCain should do exactly what he promised to do, represent his constituents interests, NOT Mr. Obamas. Sorry. but the democrats definitely exhibited their ability to be bi-partisan when they denied the Republicans a chance to even speak on a comprehensive energy solution, instead choosing to take their OWN vacations. Is that putting country first??? McCain has always shown to be middle of the road. Obama, as many times as he actually voted, has not. But yet, we should all get behind and support Mr. Obama. Right???? The same way everyone got behind and supported Bush???a And Chuck Shumer, are you freaking kidding me.... bi-partisan??? he thinks rahm emanuel is a great choice??!!!! spirit of bipartisanship dems.... way to go (but only the republicans are required to do that since now congress is filibusterproof....they don't need em anyways... I'd love to see how many republican back bills actually pass this congress... ha)
26"NO MORE BASHING OF ANYONE, JUST COME TOGETHER AND DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THIS COUNTRY! UNITE, DISCUSS, COMPROMISE, PROMOTE GOOD, POSITIVE CHANGE FOR AMERICA."
That would've been good advice 4 years ago too...
27I agree with *pinkprincess1101*. McCain should go faaaaar away. I wouldn't miss him like so many others in Washington and around the world. There are so many people that are wiser than him, and I'm sure Barack will choose those people in his Administration. And as for all those that Barack cannot choose, then I'm sure he'll listen to those other Senators just like he stated he would so many times.
28I am so damn tired of reading/hearing this whole Maverick crap. McCain is an old man that needs to retire. He can't remember what he said from one literal moment to the next, nowadays. It's time for A NEW...a new change, and we got it. I hope Washington works well together after January in order to get this country where it should be.
29pinknc---- so now it's gonna be age discrimination, is that any better then discrimination on someone based upon the color of their skin????
30Oh no, that is no even going to begin with me *Hainan57* If you want to get on the topic of racism.....that will lead this post to going into the WRONG direction and have ladies fighting.....then FORGET IT!
Like I said, McCain is old and he does forget things. I posted a video about that issue with him. If you don't believe that McCain makes up things or forgets, then check out the video of him here...

32like Biden forgetting that he said they "do not support coal" even though Obama said he did before that... and how about Obama forgetting that he told west virginians that he would do what he could to help them, but then that he will bankrupt the coal industry, everyone forgets... or did Obama and Biden just lie? And it wasn't supposed to be about the topic of racism, which I think is very real, but Ageism is no better....
33Boy did you miss a whole lot in that video, but millions of Americans did NOT, that's why Barack is the new 44th President of the United States. Millions of American paid very close attention to their speeches and written words.
This country is tired of being lied too so that all the wrong people can benefit, simple as that. McCain made too many mistakes and showd most of his true colors on film every time he opened his mouth.
34tired of being lied to.... me too. Barack Obama has lied a great deal, only time will show. And hopefully a media that will report fairly on all the lies Obama told.... ha just a dream!
35This is just the most recent "After months of telling the American people that he supports the Second Amendment, within hours of being declared the president-elect, the president elect’s transition team announced on their website an agenda taken straight from the anti-gun lobby. Four initiatives designed to ban guns and drive law-abiding firearm manufacturers and dealers out of business"
