Oprah Winfrey opened her post-election special wearing a "Hope Won" shirt, screaming into the camera, and waving her American flag. Exuberant and proud, she told viewers who supported John McCain that while she understands their disappointment, they should know that if Obama did not win, she would have been in the hospital. Although she made an exception to make her presidential choice public this year, Oprah did not use her hit show as a political platform. Now that the election is over, are you excited to see politics make a comeback on Oprah's show? Do you think she made the right choice?

Great that she's said we need each other now more than ever. That was excellent. We do. We need to help the new President to do his tasks (it is a huge challenge to lead America through a world recession and climate change). I hope Americans will work together.
1By the way I've just thought there is a very strong possibility that Obama has told Winfrey to say this, I bet you Oprah asked what's next? what can I do next to help you and America and he told her, I need the other half on my side.
2Bluesteyes it's kind of funny to think Oprah might just be that powerful.
3I'm sure keeping Oprah out of the hospital makes all McCain supporters' wounds feel better...
4I love obama but oprah annoys me.
5Most disappointing thing about the McCain loss - Oprah not being in the hospital and all those annoying celebrities NOT moving to Canada.
6This woman has the world's most amazing luck. After she supported Barack her ratings declined, she got harrassed, but now she's having the last laugh, i would gloat too if I was her. Just goes to show what sticking to your guns can do.
7"Oprah did not use her hit show as a political platform."
That statement is completely untrue, no matter how much Oprah would like people to believe it. Her show is one of the first places a lot of people saw the President's face and heard his name. She supported him very publicly, regardless of whether she mentioned it on the show specifically. I think it's fine that she used her show, and her reputation, to benefit Obama(it's her right, after all), I just wish she would stop pretending it wasn't the case.
8I love Oprah but I wish she would keep her political leanings to herself. And I hope this isn't her up there gloating for an hour like Nya said or this is one episode I will be deleting off of my dvr.
9That sucks, if McCain had won she would have been off the air? what great things we would have missed like.....um.....favorite things that only rich people can afford...and um.....the "man" who gave birth to a baby back again.....and um....how she wouldnt back a pres nominee but then did...and well.....her worship of john travolta?
I am sure that her boyfriend Gayle would have brought her flowers.
10I think its great she is supporting our president elect, and that she is sharing her political opinions. Having open debates about how we can work together to make the country better is a great thing, and she and her show can reach a really wide range of Americans and involve them in this process.
And if you're an Oprah hater than why don't you just not watch her show, seems like those that don't like her know an awful lot about the topics discussed more so than just from watching promos.
11And Mich, she definitely has supported Obama through the years and hasn't tried to hide that. But I do think she gave equal time to all candidates and did not use her show as a Obama infomercial, and that is what she meant by she didn't use the show as a political platform.
12mydiadem, I record Oprah everyday and I can tell you for a fact that she did not give equal time to all of the candidates. She had Obama on twice before she endorsed him. Then after she endorsed Obama she never had him or anyone else on her show after that. McCain was never on her show. Period. Now that Obama won I guess the ban on politics is lifted.
13Well I think its safe to say she wont be endorsing a candidate ever again and politics will probably just disappear from her show. Good riddance.
14My husband called the other day and said
"i just turned on the tv, and oprah is talking about finding your G-spot and she just asked the whole audience to squeeze their kegels....im scared"
15She's also doing something new this year where on Fridays she has her BFF Gayle, Mark Consuelos and George Stephanopolis's wife on to chat about the news. It is the most boring show ever. A whole hour of them talking about the news. That's it. I delete my Friday shows.
16I think that just because she is a talk show host doesn't mean that she should pretend she doesn't have an opinion on the presidential race. She has her own show, and I think that it is fine that she celebrates something that makes her very happy. I don't think it is any worse than Elizabeth Hasselbeck sharing her beliefs on the View. They are on talk shows because people want to hear their opinions.
17I agree that she should give her views but at least give equal time to all involved. This is the first post election bash show that she has done. I understand she is passionate about Obama but there have been many candidates before him that didn't get their post election Oprah bash. And even the View has both candidates on.
18oh my gosh, it's her show, she's allowed to do what she wants. just like anyone else, she's allowed to express her excitement...i hope she gets at least our new first lady on for an interview sometime kinda soon...
19She was/is so passionate about Obama and thrilled with his win, and it's her show so why not?!
20I watched the last part where the singers came out and sang together...I cried..
I agree that its her show and she can do whatever she wants with it.
BTW she came out with this statement after people started wondering why she hadn't invited Palin on her show..
Winfrey says she has sworn off having presidential candidates and their families on her show until after after Nov. 4, because she's already pledged her support to Democrat Sen. Barack Obama's efforts to become president.
"I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over."
21I don't know why people think winfrey isn't powerful, do you think someone isn't so powerful will have own mag? her own program? her own bookclub? ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ I agree that it's her show so why wouldn't she support Obama, a lot of other celebs come out and support him too. What's the big deal? If the other party had the right ideas I'm sure he would have gottten some support from famous people. Anyway how he won is old news, what's important is how is he going take on this big challenge!
22Jessiebanana the times newspaper has a great article on Obama and in there it's been suggested that Oprah has helped him to win this election. Many famous black faces have helped not just winfrey, Maya Angelo loves Obama!
23We must move on now..i am watching how he is going to tackle all the issues. This is now more important.
24Many of us know how a certain monkey avatar came about.
25Maya Angelou backed Clinton fyi.
I think it's fine that Oprah talks about politics on her show, it's not like she is a journalist, it's a talk show so she should be able to express her opinion. That's what she does everyday anyway for a living. The whole hospital thing was just hyperbole. It's as if I were to say I would move to Canada if my candidate didn't win the election. Trust me, I wouldn't really move out of the country.
26Clinton backs Obama..a hem. The point is what is the problem? He has won fair and square. People identify with him, educated young white americans identify with him more than the other party, more whites voted this time around than last time. Obama is the right man for this job according to many people. Anyway..whatever, I'm logging off now, say whatever, doesn't really bother me that much, i am sure others will stand up for Obama and Oprah anyway
27'mydiadem, I record Oprah everyday and I can tell you for a fact that she did not give equal time to all of the candidates. She had Obama on twice before she endorsed him. '
1) if you really think that she didn't give equal time then you can take it up with the FCC.
2) she had Obama on twice yes but I'm pretty sure it was before he decided he was going to run. After he did decide and she endorsed him she didn't discuss politics pretty much at all since.
'We must move on now..i am watching how he is going to tackle all the issues. This is now more important.'
I agree, and I think Oprah can use her show as a medium to facilitate some kind of national dialogue on issues going forward. She does it for the puppy mills and the child predator laws, she can do it for our country's policies going forward.
28I saw the episode BEFORE Obama announced he was throwing his hat in the ring! After that -- she didn't have him on her show. Oprah is a private citizen too -- she can support whom ever she pleases. And lastly -- Oprah rocks!!
29The ladies on the VIEW talk politics all the time -- what's the difference??
30Oprah can say however she likes... but she shouldn't be surprised when her ratings drop because she alienates a large portion of her viewer audience.
31The FCC didn't say she gave equal time, you did. Which is why I corrected you not the FCC.
32ummmm oooookkkkk, thanks for correcting me,I guess? If you think that Oprah was unfair and didn't give equal time I was letting you know you have an outlet to voice your complaint.
And I'm still pretty sure she didn't have Obama on at all after he announced his candidacy.
And I kind of doubt that Oprah is alienating half her audience by talking about the future of this country. The vote already happened, she isn't telling those that voted for John McCain he was wrong. What do people have to be alienated about?
33Not many McCain supporters want to tune in to a virtual Obama party, obviously.
34I highly doubt she is going to turn every single show into an Obama party, that can't be what you mean.
35That's not what I mean, but I'm sure she's lost a portion of her viewership following her enthusiastic endorsement and campaigning. She'll probably keep losing viewers as people feel like they don't belong in her target audience for more and more politically themed episodes.
36I know that I used to love, love, love Perez Hilton, but I stopped going there as his priorities turned more political and alienating. I don't watch Oprah, but I think it'd be naive to assume that no portion of her viewership feels similarly.
Anyways, why are you arguing why people would or would not keep watching? It doesn't invalidate my point that she should feel free to proclaim whatever political beliefs she wants, but that she should expect viewers to stop tuning in. Do you not agree with that statement in and of itself?
Ok as an Obama and Oprah supporter she did use her show to support Obama not technically saying I'm voting for him, but everything was blue leading up to election day she had certain Obama supporters on her show that people knew were supporting him, she showed up to some of his campaigns, and the list goes on, but its her show her right, btw she supported Bill Clinton too not as much as Obama but its was pretty up there she also supported Hilary before Obama announced his running.
37I can definitely agree with that statement in and of itself.
38"And I'm still pretty sure she didn't have Obama on at all after he announced his candidacy."
She didn't. As I stated before a bunch of posts ago. And no, she isn't telling us that we were wrong to vote McCain, just that a win for McCain would have put her in the hospital. That doesn't really alienate me but it does make me worry about her health. Me being an Oprah fan and all.
39Well that's all I was getting at I guess, so forget all the other stuff. =D
40so obviously she is a DEMOCRACT and will probably only support democrats, make sense now. I know if I had her celebrity status I'd be pulling for Hilary i'd probably be more active in my support where there was no reasonable doubt that I was supporting her, and then she lost to Obama and then use my show again to support him, and she has a big enough audience that it really wouldn't matter if she lost viewers, there are viewers all over this world not just the U.S., I'm sure some conservators will come around when she starts giving away cars.
41See, I'm just the type that I don't want the celebrities that I like to be very public about their political beliefs. Even when they align with mine. The celebrities I like, I like for their entertainment value and how they can entertain me and take me away from real life, a temporary escape, so I'd just rather they not use their celebrity status to tout their political views. But then again I don't want them endorsing products either... just shut up, look pretty and make me laugh is basically what I want from celebrities
42Sorry re-read my comment conservatives
43I just wanted to add that Oprah has voted for republicans in the past.
44Can't. Stand. Her.
And it has nothing to do with her political leanings.
45its tiiiime for the oprah hook uuuuuuuuup! (love madtv)
46People voted in this country like we do every four years. The majority rules. Or as long as I've lived here, this is how its worked.
Oprah was REALLY EXCITED. So she's sharing her views with the world, you have a couple options. You can watch the show or turn it.
Considering I was in the majority, I watched it. And no I don't think she was alienating anyone to the person who feels she was.
47Except that a celebrity isn't just a celebrity there for you entertainment Kimpossible, they are people. I wouldn't want to be silenced if I were to become a celebrity.
48True Jessie. this is just the "relationship" I prefer to have with them is all.
