Since first dates usually revolve around a meal, it's important to pay attention to what you eat, how you eat it, and how it'll affect you later in the night! November's issue of Cosmo touched upon mastering a first date, and named six foods to avoid in order to do just that. Check out their six below, and six of my own too!
- A messy plate of spaghetti with tomato sauce
- Escargots with butter and garlic
- Deep-fried anything
- A salad with low-fat dressing on the side
- Three-bean chili
- Barbecued chicken wings
To see the six foods I would avoid on a first date, just read more.
- Steamed crab — or any kind of shellfish that requires the use of your hands
- A burger or sandwich that's too big or sloppy to eat gracefully
- Indian food — the smell of curry stays with you
- Strawberries, poppy seeds, or anything that could easily get stuck in your teeth
- Anything too spicy for your own good
- Onion rings, onion soup, or anything with raw red onions in it
What foods do you typically avoid in a first date?

Promod
Jipepe
Luella
I typically just avoid foods that will get stuck in my teeth. Anything else is fair game.
1that's it! i'm not dating anymore!
2stuff that will make my tummy hurt later - for me, that's lots of garlic or iceberg lettuce and i think spicy stuff
you also want to avoid ceasar salad, for the garlic factor but also because the huge leaves are very ungraceful
i'd suggest something very normal like chicken and a side of steamed veggies or something, maybe some mashed potatoes...so you look like you eat but don't look like you eat like a man, and you can easily cut that up with a fork and knife and eat it gracefully and it shouldn't upset the ol tummmy!
on my first date with my bf i had a salad with grilled salmon, and with my ex we actually shared fajitas...other than that, i don't remember any first dates really
3oh yah and immediately excuse yourself to the bathroom for a teeth check, or if he gets up, quickly glance into your cell phone reflection!!
4i haven't had a first date in quite some time as i'm in a 2 hyear relationship, but the first time we went out, we just drank a lot...and the second and third dates were the same!
5I agree with the sandwiches. They're messy.
6I'm not working that hard to impress someone. Like me for who I am with my onion breath. I tend to avoid the whole I'm trying to impress you by acting super polite and feminine routine. It's all bound to come out at some point anyway. Luckily my boyfriend and I both love onions. When he goes to kiss me I'll say "I ate onions today" and he'll say "me too". haha
7I would refrain from eating anything with garlic and I hope my date would do the same. I can't stand the smell.
But what's wrong with a salad with low-fat dressing on the side?
8As much as I love sushi, it is not something I can eat gracefully, so I would never get it on a first date or a business lunch.
9Krradford the salad with low-fat dressing suggests that you might be one of those crazy dieters that never like to eat anything substantial which often scares men away. Men like women who eat, not as much as them but a woman who is comfortable enough with herself to be able to eat a proper meal. Hence why on a first date you shouldnt try to advertise that you're on a diet.
10I don't know about you, but oven-roasted garlic makes me extremely gassy! Avoid that on ANY dates! I cut our evening short the other day (it wasn't a first date) because I was starting to feel toots coming on.
11I say eat whatever you want, That way he knows exactly what he is getting, a garlic, spicy, sushi loving girl who isnt afraid to get her hands dirty. Believe me, he will kiss you either way and not care! Heck feed him some food, you will cancel eachother out!
12Fallen - I figured that's what it meant, but I wasn't sure. But then there are some guys that look at you crazy for eating a lot. We can't win! I'm with you CG, I'm eating what I want on a fist date, except for garlic (hate the smell).
13I eat whatever I want to eat. If I pick something I don't like, I will barely be able to choke anything down, and then I'd look like some girl who starves herself! The last first date I went on I had steak in a mushroom sauce. It was sooo good.
14I'm with you, CG! If he doesnt want to date me because I got some spaghetti sauce on my face or I like spicy food, I don't want him anyway
15LOL BBKF, me and my SO had Sushi on our first date, and 4.5 years later, I think it went well &:)
16I think all foods are fair game. If your partner isn't going to love you just because you had a double onion burger, then move on, seriously. And butter and garlic sauce...to die for! My lady and I love garlic, so sharing garlic after-taste with each other is our guilty little secret!
17Garlic. I don't digest it, it hurts my stomach like crazy and then I'm bloated, crampy, and FARTING. Spicy foods aren't so kind to me either... I guess Skigurl and I have the same digestive system!
But I do love to eat, so if I want a burger (and I probably will), I'll have my darn burger!
18I eat what I want, it's never been a turn off to anyone
But I do like to avoid sushi
in the beginning because my mouth is too small and it isn't always pretty, lol. I really wouldn't want to be on a date with someone who made me feel like I couldn't eat a certain way!
19You all are making me crave sushi.
It's been a while since I've been on a date but I eat whatever I want. I don't care if I'm farting later because the guy isn't going to be coming home with me after the first date!
20I had a huge burger and some fries with a tall glass of coke on my first date 3 years ago...I think he liked it so much that he married me!
21Anything with garlic! Somehow anytime I eat garlic, I emanate the scent for hours, like I'm wearing some sort of disturbing garlic perfume. Other than that, I will eat pretty much anything on a date, as long as I can do it gracefully.
22
23I agree with most of the stuff on this list, but the salad thing? Just because I don't want to spend the next couple of hours with a big ol' meal in my stomach doesn't mean I'm a crazy dieter. Plus, I have a gluten-intolerence so going out to most restaurants is a bit of a challenge..me+gluten= he will be sorry he ever met me.
24im sorry, but i cant say no to bbq wings, even for the sake of a first date!..its my weakness
25I eat whatever I want, EXCEPT if it is an interview/business lunch or dinner, then I am careful not to pick anything messy!
26i think its kinda stupid to like "avoid" all these different foods on a first date, guys dont like girls who dont eat anything, guys actually like girls with a good appetite, and if the guy your with isnt like that, he isnt worth dating.
besides, if hes worth seeing, then you'll be eating alot more together after the first date anyway.
27I don't do dinner first date. I would prefer either coffee or just drinks. Save dinner for when we're a bit more comfortable. Then I'd stick with all the advice everyone else said but not be as worried about it.
28I eat whatever I want I love food and escargot is one of my favorite things so there is no way I would avoid it on a menu just because I was on a first date.
29But how can I not have Indian food if I'm Desi?????
30I eat whatever I want too. For my first date with my ex, I had spaghetti and meatballs. My current boyfriend and I went to a diner for our first date, and it was pretty early in the morning so I had chocolate chip pancakes. Hehe I order what I want, but usually I'm so nervous that I don't eat that much. Thankfully, my boyfriend was nervous too and I noticed he didn't eat that much either. Lol.
And now I'm craving sushi.....
31This sounds like something Julia Allison would write. Dear, I expect better things from you!
32http://www.askmen.com/celebs/interview_250/289b_julia_allison_interview....
eat whatever you want just dont be sloppy about it. He needs to know the real you and Im sure you want him to be real with you (not talking about farting or burping).
33I wouldn't eat any garlic or raw onions. I also would not eat anything that would make me gassy like beans or broccoli. My stomach is really sensitive and I would not have fun if my stomach was rumbling.
34I don't worry about stuff like that. I'm the type to pop an Altoid and forget about it...most likely he has some issue too. Who cares? Just make sure you take some Beano and be a 'real person'...and enjoy the date.
35hmmm... never really thought about first date foods. i get whatever sounds yummy and just wipe my mouth with my napkin. that's all
36I'm with the "eat whatever you want" camp. However, my hubby cannot eat buffalo wings without getting sauce all over his face and hands. Seriously...I can't look at him if he's eating wings because I'm totally mortified by how messy he gets. If we had wings on our first date...I don't know that we would be where we are today!
37I eat whatever I want. Who cares?
38so what exactly CAN i eat? this is silly
39Well I have braces, so basically any-and-everything gets stuck in my teeth.
As far
as digestion, I try to avoid anything with dairy (not including cheese) or heavy cream b/c it makes my stomach gurgle for hours. Not hot!
40I don't care if I "eat like a guy" -- I'll eat whatever I want! I'm with you CG!
41What's wrong with deep fried food? If you can't bond over Bojangles then you shouldn't be dating
42I will eat whatever I want.
43I would totally eat the seafood though. Eating with your hands is quite sexy i feel (if it's done rightly only please). I wouldn't eat noodles soup on the first date! But apart from that I'm cool.
44Geez Cosmo, thanks for giving us more pointless rules to live by in order to "GET THAT GUY!!"
-This is not a criticism of Dear posting this though, because it generated good discussion including "eff Cosmo and their rules!"
And the salad thing is stupid, they don't even want you to avoid it for practical purposes, but so you'll seem like someone you're not. Not that I ever get salads, but I'd like to fancy myself as someday being the healthy gal that does...
Argh, I could rant for days against the stupidity of Cosmo!
45First date with my partner was at a mexican joint. We broke so many of those rules!
We ate:
Too much chilli.
Raw Red Onions
Sloppy Taco's and Taquitos.
Salad which got stuck in our teeth.
And the infamous mexican beans!
We'll, we now LOVE smelly food, anything that tastes awesome and will leave us regretting it the next day. Especially Indian. God we LOVE Indian!
46well - i would have to say that anything that's messy wouldn't be good - i've even done my best to avoid the garlic thing just like the onion thing since you don't want to be smelled for hours and hours later.
i think that if there are any foods that don't always agree with your stomach - you should avoid those too. for me - it's dairy things, cause it's sooo awkward when you feel like you have gas or have to go to the bathroom all the time.
47I generally try to avoid things that may get caught in my teeth or things that require way too much attention to eat.
