Barack Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Lee Payne Dunham, died today after a battle with cancer. A statement released by Obama and his sister said:

She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.
Last month, with only two weeks to go before election day, Obama took two days off from campaigning to make a final visit to his ailing grandmother in Hawaii. Now, with the sad news coming only one day before the presidential election, the Obama family must be filled with many emotions. Our thoughts go out to them.

My deepest sympathies to the Barack Obama and family. Also to all of Mrs. Dunham's loved ones. Sad day in the Obama camp.
An election win would be bittersweet.
1This is so tragic
especially right before Election day. My thoughts go out to Obama and his
family.
2Incredibly sad--I'm sure she is already missed...
3My condolences goes out to the Obama family and may they have the strength to carry on. He has a gaurdian angel now.
Obama '08!
4just awful. even though she wont see him win tomorrow, at least she got to see him come this far.
5What a shame that she didn’t get a chance to see her grandson elected president. She was a great woman, who raised a great man.
6Wow such a sad day for him.
7So incredibly sad. My condolences to the whole family. I hope she will be very proud tomorrow wherever she is!
8That's so sad. He literally has NO time to grieve without having to return back to business.
9This makes me so sad. I was so hoping she would get to see him elected president.
10This has really touched me.
11He has experienced so much loss already in his life. I am just grateful that he has such a supportive wife and family to help him through this difficult time.
This is so sad. It has to be hard to continue campaigning. I'll pray for him and his family.
12wow this is horrible. I am completly shocked.
13wow.
Such sad news. Ms. Dunham was a good lady who did a beautiful job with her grandson. My condolences to the Obama family.
And, Misscgo, I agree... he's got a guardian angel now.
14I'm sure this is a dark day in his life. Lets hope that tomorrow is one of the brightest.
15This is so sad. The Obama family will be in my thoughts. I'm sure Madelyn will still be watching tomorrow, though, and she will be able to enjoy the moment without the physical pain she must have been suffering towards the end.
16This is so sad and heartbreaking. I can truly understand how it feels (as many people do). Sincere condolences to his family. Hopefully he can take some alone time to grieve after the election is over.
17The timing is so sad for this to happen, and I agree, he has virtually no time to grieve. And it's going to be very hard for him to grieve in private, all eyes are on him.
18Very sad news. I'm glad she got to see her grandson accomplish so much. Rest in peace.
19May she rest in peace. I hope Senator Obama wins and she will be smiling down at him from heaven.
20Ugh. So frustrating. I hope she just let go because she was comfortable with his lead in the polls.
I'd also like to say to everyone (not here, but elsewhere) who even suggested that his taking off to go see her in Hawaii was a pr stunt trips and stubs their toe on something very, very hard.
21From the Obama family:
"Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes, and prayers during this difficult time. It brought our grandmother and us great comfort. Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to any worthy organization in search of a cure for cancer."

VERY, very hard and sharp!
23In honor of Obama’s grandma, when I cast my vote tomorrow, I will think of his little “Toot” and do it for her.
24I'm glad he took the time off to see her
25Me too dream. I'm so glad that he got to see her.
26My condolences to his family, and may she rest in peace.
And can you believe the poor timing of this:

UGH
27My heart goes out to the Obama family. I am so sorry for their loss. I wanted Mrs. Dunham to see Barack make history so badly, but I know she knew he was going to do it. Celebrating tomorrow will be bittersweet.
28I'm with you, Dreamsugar.
29I thought that she would at least make it to January. I feel really bad for him and his sister.

What the hell is wrong with the GOP -- why even bring up the trip??? Don't they have ANYHTING else to run with.
31so sad. so bittersweet that she passed the day before the election.
32My condolences to him and his family. Hopefully after tomorrow he'll have much more time to grieve in private.
33Oh how incredibly sad.
34My thoughts and prayers are with Obama and his family.
Lets not make this post political and just give condolences.
35wow - what a petty move by the Cali GOP, talk about ignoring the issues and being complete a-holes! I'm sure the money spent on visiting his dying grandmother makes all the difference in the election - I'm sure it makes much more of a difference then the 150k spent on Palin's Valentino clothing....
Worse yet, if we ignore the morality and humanity aspects of this act by the Cali GOP (like they did) and look at it as a political move - the dumbasses knew the woman was really, really sick and she might not make it to election day - why on earth would you not wait to file this complaint till after election day so you don't look like total a-holes if she passes away and you are complaining about her grandson visiting her?
Decent human behavior aside - I would not want such idiots running my state.
36bastylefilegirl, wow, I had not seen that report.
I am so so glad he went to see his grandmother, only sad he could not spend more time with her. I am will to bet that the majority of people who have donated money to the Democratic party for Obama's campaign don't mind one bit that he used campaign money for his trip to see her. In her own way, she has been part of the campaign. She's a reason he's who he is today, and in this campaign in the first place.
37[Lets not make this post political and just give condolences.]
FAIR ENOUGH!

This is absolutely heartbreaking.
39I am so lucky to have my grandmother still around, I know that he cherished that relationship as I cherish mine and I know he will keep his memories of her alive in his children.
40This is very sad. My heart goes out to him and his family.
41This is so sad that the woman that made obama the man he is today will not see her boy be elected president, I know its her grandson I'm sure she loved him like her own son she raised him, I'm glad that there are some republicans offering their condolences
42My condolences to Barack, Maya and their families. I'm sure Madelyn's in a better place and free of pain. Cancer is such a tragic illness for both the person and their family.
43wow Basty! that's ridiculous!
I hope his day will be better tomorrow while she watches over him...
44Que Dieu garde son âme en paix...
45"What the caterpillar perceives is the end, to the butterfly is just the beginning."
Rest easy sweet lady.
46My vote is going to McCain, but my heart breaks for Sen. Obama this evening. I'm glad he had a chance to visit and say goodbye. And should he win tomorrow, I will give him my support and the respect anyone in the office of President should receive.
47Well said mfern. Well said.
48My condolences to the Obama family.
This is terribly sad. I lost my grandmother this year as well, and I can't even imagine not being by her side when it happened. Barack obviously had a close relationship with his grandparents, and the timing of this couldn't be more heartbreaking.
49Same here, LilPeaPod. It's not an easy thing to go through, the loss of a loved one. And to do it all in the public eye. He's very strong and with his family, he will get through this.
