With only days to go until election day, John McCain did what he could to get the SNL bump. While Barack Obama paid millions to appear on major networks during primetime last Wednesday, John McCain and Tina Fey, as Sarah Palin of course, opened Saturday Night Live by hosting a QVC sketch. The original maverick pitched pork knives (to cut the pork) and (blank) commemorative plates to help customers remember the 10 joint town-hall debates Barack Obama did not attend.
McCain came back later during Weekend Update, receiving a mixed reaction from the audience. Were the free sketches worth more than the Obama infomercial, or did it all just make a joke of the campaign too close to voting? Check out the shopping channel appearance — there's even a Heidi Montag shout-out, and a surprise guest!

How many viewers will think it was really Palin?
1The funniest parts were McCain fine gold with Cindy and I nearly died when Tina whispered, "I'm going rogue" and held up Palin 2012 shirt. Sometimes it looked like McCain could barely keep himself from laughing at Tina.
2It did make a joke of the campaign but there is too much tension right now. People need to laugh.
I love Tina! She is just too funny!
3I think it was good of McCain to come on and have a laugh with people. I don't think his temperament is his best asset, and I took this as his effort to put that aside and have some fun. I thought he was a good sport to do it, though ultimately at this point in the campaign I still feel Obama's time was better spent trying to get his message out to people and get back to the stories that are being written while we all sit here and blog our thoughts - those people who lose their homes and jobs, who fear for their children's college funds or their own healthcare. But I don't begrudge McCain this choice, because humour is also a welcomed thing in such stressful and argumentative times.
At this point, its been a tumultuous campaign for all sides, and none of us REALLY know how he felt about Palin or the events afterwards, I kind of hope someday in the future he will sit down and write about this stuff with the level of blunt honesty and individualist perspective I came to expect from him, once upon a time.
4I think SNL is giving McCain free publicity.
5I thought it was creepy. It was the good, please like me McCain, but I thought it was bizarre for him to stand there while Tina Fey did the "I'm going rogue" bit (which I thought was funny, but I don't like her - he's supposed to). The only thing I laughed out loud at was the Biden doll that talked for 45 minutes.
6I'm going to miss Tina Fey as Palin. I must say watching Cindy and McCain side by side is creepy. It's like watching your cute 15 year old cousin kiss her sleazy 25 year old boyfriend.
7The weekend update was good too (at times this sketch was more ceepy than funny) - the "sad Grandpa" really got to me, I felt bad when people booed!
The Biden doll was funny too, and Tina Fey is awesome!
8I liked it. I thought it was well written (although it's funny that they said they didn't have enough money so they are selling stuff on qvc - yet I read today they are going to spend like 10 million on their campaign these last couple of days?)
9I loved when Palin went to the side to sell her Palin 2012 shirts. I'm gonna miss Fey! Even though I think McCain is cranky and has a bad temper, it was good to see him laughing and just being normal
I actually wouldn't mind buying commemorative Joe dolls...the Biden on was great.
10i thought the sketch was great (surprisingly). texas had just lost, so i was in a really crappy mood when i started watching, and was very happy to find myself laughing instead of pouting more at having to watch mccain. he's not a great actor (not surprising seeing how he reacted during some parts of the debates) but i still found it amusing.
not as amusing as watching ben affleck crack while portraying keith olbermann, but amusing none-the-less.
11I like the part where Tina runs her hand down her jacket lapel when saying how campaigns are expensive.
12
AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
13I think the only really good line was, "I am a true Maverick. a republican with no money!" That was hilarious! The rest was kind of lame. I love Tina Fey, but I love her as Liz Lemon and can deal with just that from now on!
14McCain's got a great sense of humor. Sometimes, I wish he was the same McCain he was 8 years ago... I did respect this man incredibly until he started doing the 180 degree turn. Palin, on the other hand, ugh.
15Ben Affleck as Olberman was priceless! I love Ben Affleck, his endorsement of McCain was pretty good too. SNL yesterday was better than most days actually.
16His skit wasn't that funny to me, but I absolutely loved the Cindy McCain cameo. That is one fierce biatch! Tina was on point as usual.
@Zeze, I really liked Ben's skit too but it went on a little long for me. Miss Precious Perfect
17I thought McCain actually did pretty well! The skit wasn't the best one I've seen, but I chuckled at some parts, like at the Joe Biden doll and when Tina Fey went off to the side to sell her "Palin in 2012" shirts.
18I love ben as olberman! I tuned in after it was already on and right away I knew who he was doing!
19The 45 minute Biden thing was cute, I mean seriously...he is long-winded sometimes (then again so are a lot of them...)!
20I laughed. The funnier thing is, Tina Fey would be a better VP than Sarah Palin.
21Is it just me or was the chemistry between Faux Palin and McCain better than the chemistry between the Real Sarah Palin and John McCain lately?
22He was pretty amusing, but no amount of funny is going to change my mind about his politics and the prospect of a McCain/Palin administration, so it's all a wash
He was a lot more likable than he's been on the campaign trail, though.
23It was a lot funnier than I expected. I didn't think McCain would be able to poke fun at himself and Republicans, but I think he did a good job.
24Ben Aflek's Keith Olberman was hysterical.
25I thought it was hilarious. I'm still not voting for him, but it was a good laugh. And I always appreciate it when people can make jokes about themseleves. Life's way too short to take it this seriously.
26Honestly?
I thought the QVC sketch was hysterical. Really, really, funny. And Cindy McCain's cameo felt incredibly realistic. Also, McCain has good timing. He's a funny "sad grandpa." The weekend update sketch was awkward, but the QVC one was just hilarious. Maybe he could sell stuff after the election.
