Yesterday Sarah Palin happily took a call from French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Only problem: two Canadian comedians merely pretending to be the French president were on the line. Despite the tres bad French accent, the Alaska governor carried on the conversation about how Sarkozy could see Belgium from his house. And it got even better — Palin listened politely as the man she thought was the French president discussed his love for the pornography starring Palin's look-a-like. Oh la la.
Palin even chatted policy, saying Sarkozy's help for the French middle class was a great example. Perhaps she's not as afraid of socialists as she lets on.
Don't worry — she isn't the first leader the duo has embarrassed. She now joins Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy as victims of the same comedians. Keeping her good humor, Palin's camp released a statement following the prank: "C'est la vie." Take a listen, and then let GiggleSugar know if the joke was funny, or too mean.

I already posted in Giggle about this...I thought it was hilarious!
1She obviously couldnt understand a word this guy was saying!
I'm wondering how these guys even got through. Why would they think that the President of France would have time to chat with a VP candidate?
2Okay, if the bad accent wasn't enough (really an exaggerated french CANADIAN accent), but Stef Carse as our Prime Minister? STEPHEN HARPER was just re-elected a short month ago...somehow she missed seeing his name in the paper? And he's a Conservative, too! And she didn't question the province of Quebec having a Prime Minister as well? (here, the governor is called the Premier).
I can't feel bad for her...he constantly drops hints that it's fake...she can't honestly think Sarkozy would keep calling her Mrs. Governor and think the porn film (not yet finished) is a documentary? Or wonder why he would even call her in the first place?
3I'm loving it was done by Canadians and that her incompetence is being further exposed DAYS before the election... she's the goof that keeps on giving.
4Bless her little confused, ignorant heart!
5Did they just look her up in the phonebook? How'd they get through?
6it was in the works for a few days with her campaign. i thought it was hilarious!! good times, lol!!!
7This is why it always pays to know your French — so you can pick up on a phony French accent! — and to know your Canadian Prime Ministers! Also, methinks some junior staffer is in hot water for setting this up.
8Right bella, as soon as it ended I thought of the poor girl who handed her the phone!
And you can't say she didn't know what he was saying - she answered his ridiculous questions - no Joe the plumber is not my husband, yes we should go hunting together when he said he enjoyed taking life, and thanked him for telling her he like her porn documentary - I think she just believed it was the French President and she was being "diplomatic" by agreeing to everything he said.
HarmonyFrance said it best on another thread - she is on autopilot and just answers in her folksy script no matter what is being said to her.
9It's a shame that we think this is funny. Just because you don't agree with her politics isn't a good reason to bash someone. The left elitists really disgust me. Would we all be laughing the same if this was done to Barak or Biden?
10UnDave35, The purpose of the prank was to see if she'd fall for it... and not only did she fall but she made herself sound very foolish. I found it to be funny but more than that I was also disturbed... It would have been disturbing if anyone, let alone Obama, responded the way she did. This is what I wrote on Giggle's thread:
11"I don't think it was too mean. The fact that her staff didn't properly screen the call displays a much too relaxed attitude and incompetence on their part. As for her, this reveals her to be ignorant about the topics that as a VP candidate she should have internalized by now. I don't think it was mean... I might even say it was necessary"
I think it is sad more than funny....
And I seriously doubt Barack or Biden or McCain or Hillary or a number of other competent people would have been in this position...even if they had been fooled into thinking the French President was calling them while they were running for VP (which is unlikely) I figured at some point, after being asked extremely inappropriate questions they would have caught on - I'm sure Biden would have said "Are you joking, is this a real question, or is that a joke" way before thanking someone for liking their porn documentary.
I'm not going to defend her incompetence and poor judgement when she continues to display it so vividly for the world to see.
12She's in politics and she's running for VP... she really needs to know what she's talking about.
13I kinda wish they would do this to Obama or Biden! I'd want to hear what they'd say.
But I still think this is funny.
I don't think Palin said anything wrong, and I don't think it makes it so painfully obvious that she is lacking in knowledge (although she didn't demonstrate any, either)...someone didn't set this up right for her, and she got caught talking to someone a little bit...objectionable, but if it really WAS him in a private phone call, it probably wouldn't be the smartest thing to start correcting him or questioning him.
I honestly don't think this was a bad candid moment for Palin. She acted the same way we know her to act when she thought she was on the phone with the French president. Not bad!
14You see Sarah, if you'd gotten your passport and travelled a bit you'd recognise the fake accent!
15I actually think the funniest bit is when she's admonishing the assistant for giving her the phone too early. "you don't hand it to me until they're on".
Other than that she sounded polite and cheery.
It's just a prank that has been a lot more successful than these guys thought it would be I bet.
I really think it's a stretch to say it's left wing elitistism.
This is the radio equivalent of Bart Simpson calling Moe at the bar.
Maybe she was just being polite, but what happens if she doesn't understand what a real foreign leader is saying to her? Is she just going to nod her head and laugh? She better start learning how to speak to foreign leaders (fake or not) so that she doesn't show her blatant ignorance and lack of knowledge. She's in a position where she better make damn sure it's legitimate.
16"I actually think the funniest bit is when she's admonishing the assistant for giving her the phone too early. "you don't hand it to me until they're on"."
ha..I loved that part too - and here is where I really would like to see how Obama/Biden/McCain/Hillary would react...and I think their reactions might be equally funny.
17The reality is that if she was in the position to speak to foreign leaders she would have people around her that translate, interpret and make sure nothing untoward is said or done.
18But between this and the falsely accusing "B" scratch girl, the PLO professor accusations.
I'm starting to think the McCain/ Palin campaign is being run by kids on work experience.
She's giggling like a nervous school girl. If one were to overlook how dumb and inappropriate her responses are, she still doesn't sound like VP material.
19Oh she definitely sounds like she's also on work experience for the week but is anyone surprised by that?
20She is clearly out of her depth, they really need to get a hold of the party now and make sure someone of her ilk is not running in 2012.
At the same time, remember to vote so she's not speaking to the real Sarkozy by the end of next week.
"You see Sarah, if you'd gotten your passport and travelled a bit you'd recognise the fake accent!" - ceej
No kidding! Lol.
21She seemed unprofessional when she got on the phone and then told her staff to hand her the phone only after the person was on the line. The fake Prez was saying, "Hello!" and she didn't even hear it! What if it had been real?
22I agree with unDave. The left elitists really disgust me. All you elitists - d*mn you.
:eyeroll:
We shouldn't look at Palin for participating in this at all. Blame the ones who are doing the pranking. I bet Obama, Biden, and McCain would have never did this. They would have declined the questions and been diplomatic.
23wow, he referenced Palin porn and she didn't even seem to notice.
24Funny, not mean at all. I don't know french, never been to France and I know that's a fake accent. This lady is ridiculous, almost anything that makes fun of her is okay in my book. Oh yeah, and the Palin porn reference was awesome.
25Honestly the big question here is WTF was her staff doing? The person who seriously thought that the President of France would be calling her is ridiculous, that fake accent was ridiculous, those questions were ridiculous. Dave this has nothing to do with the left liberal elist media, this was Palin's staff's fault (i hope that's grammatically correct). The whole thing was really silly.
26I know what you mean Bellaressa, she chewed out her staffer when she was still on the line. Two more days gotdammit two more days!
27I just read a piece that described Sarah Palin as "intellectually incurious". How apt.
28Wow. I cannot believe she actually believed that. I mean, really.
29"Would we all be laughing the same if this was done to Barak or Biden?"
Maybe not, but I bet YOU would get quite a chuckle out of it if it were reversed.
30Harmony, I would laugh. I would think it would be great. That is why you have a staff in place to screen your calls. If your a CEO or have your own company, even if your a department head - you know your staff is there to help you, watch your back, and to help with the work and bottom line. Palin's staff dropped the ball.
31Palin's staff seem to always drop the ball. Anyone rememeber the fruitfly thing or was that just her.
32And I'll never forget the Rashid Khalidi incident.
33I really believe she needs a better research team - for that I blame McCain. He should have made sure she was on top game and had top dog people. I know everyone makes mistakes but she is just making ones that make her and the campaign look bad. It's one thing to miscount, to talk about one country and mistake it for another; etc. It just seems to be magnified when Palin does it.
34Given that she was so far behind everyone else in the race with her knowledge of foreign policy, domestic politics and what her actual role would involve as VP you'd think they would have gotten her the brightest minds to get her up to speed.
35This doesn't seem to be the case at all.
She makes to many easy mistakes.
36Oh yes ceej, you reminded me that she still apparently doesn't know what her job title would be if she were to get elected. "The Vice President is in charge of the Senate" - Palin 2008
37oh undave...always the party pooper ...
To answer your question (yea I'm late so what..) yes I would be laughing! Because I highly doubt Obama would have answered the questions she did! I cant say he wouldn't fall for it because who knows!
The prank was hilarious because she fell for it and she agreed with everything this guy was saying..end of story.
38You know what, Dave? If Obama fell for it, I would laugh(kid you not) and I'm sure he would too. I'm very sure he's not that stupid/gullible though.
As far as your 'left elitist' statement goes...SPARE US, PLEASE. Don't be pissed cause y'all are going down with a sinking ship.
39Every article that isn't all that good about Palin and McCain
40has an elephant that sits there and b*tches.
If being educated, intelligent and articulate makes one "elite" that doesn't say a lot about those non-elite conservatives, does it? Palin just supported that theory with this call.
Somewhere Katie Couric laughing, because NOW Palin really knows what a "gotcha" interview sounds like.
Biden even asks the mainstream media if they are joking, so you know he at least listens to the questions, rather than nodding like a neo-con bobble head.
41"If being educated, intelligent and articulate makes one "elite" that doesn't say a lot about those non-elite conservatives, does it? "
Being educated doesn't make you elite, it's what you do with that education that makes you elitist.
42Elite (also spelled Élite) is taken originally from the Latin, eligere, "to elect". In sociology as in general usage, the élite is a relatively small dominant group within a large society, which enjoys a privileged status envied by individuals of lower social status.
The position of an elite at the top of the social strata almost invariably puts it in a position of leadership and often subjects the holders of elite status to pressure to maintain their position as part of the elite. However, in spite of the pressures, the existence of the elite social stratum is usually unchanged.
Elites are educated to govern. While common public education is often designed to educate the general population to produce knowledgeable and skilled citizens, the elite approach to education is often presented at a more intellectual and demanding level, and is geared to produce leaders of a sort. It can be idealized as an education geared to producing an individual capable of thinking at an intellectual level more advanced than the general population, consisting of diverse philosophical ideals and theories in order to enable the elite to logically evaluate situations.
43How many of you all are elitists?
44Not I.
45Who the hell am i kidding, I'm not a damn elitist. Oh well.
46WW - thanks for keeping it real
. We all know kastarte2 is the real
elitist.
47I'm still working on my BA, so I don't believe I qualify.
48"Not I" said the cat.
49Jessie, you're going to college - your one too. You're making your life better for the future.
