Here's the second installment of "the night Barack Obama took over the television." Appearing via satellite on the Daily Show before his 11 p.m. rally with Bill Clinton (so late!) Obama described his big infomercial to Jon Stewart, re-running Michelle's line about his kids being afraid he was taking over all the TV. Stewart asked of the commercial, ". . . Will it. . . annoy us?" Fair question, sir!
Poking fun at some of the scare tactics used against Obama, Stewart brought up the specter of the "Bradley Effect" and asked whether Obama might hit the booth on the 4th and his white half might be scared to vote for him. After chatting for a bit, Obama said, "This is the time to want to be president. . . now is the time when you can have some impact." Obama summed up his visit saying that despite being a "pretty conservative nation, " we now have "big challenges and problems that give us a chance to really move in a new direction." It was a better satellite connection than usual — both Obama and Stewart drew audience laughs and cheers — sometimes that satellite delay kills any sort of comedic timing.
What did you think? Was this appearance better than his 30-minute infomercial?

The Daily Show gave you the chance to consider Obama the person, the infomercial focused on the issues that should matter to us all when we vote.
1two different things and hard to compare. the commercial was meant to communicate with swing voters, and the daily show was preaching to the choir. they both hit the mark in their own ways. i will say that i do like seeing him in a more casual setting, because it's comforting to see that he does have a sense of humor and can take a joke.
2Well said, stephley. I enjoyed watching both last night.
And I said this earlier, what I was thinking of during the informercial was, if McCain had a similar chance to do a 30 minute tv ad, his would have been totally different than this. He would have used his half an hour to slam Obama instead of talking about what his plans are if he's elected. It's his motto lately.
3Oh, good point! A both option... forthcoming
4thanks citizen now i get to vote again!
5I agree. I enjoyed the infomercial and the appearance on the daily show.
6I wasn't home for the infomercial, but the Daily Show was great.
7The ad made me misty and wistful and desperate to believe he can win; the Jon appearance made him oh-so-likable. When they cut to him before the interview, right before commercial and he was laughing freely at Jon's joke--how great and honest was that?
Love him.
8I agree with Stephly, I think they both were great but had different intended audiences. It is nice to see he can feel comfortable in both areas.
9Michelle does the Malia story better but Barack was really funny. Especially when they were talking about the Bradley factor and Jon asked him if he was afraid that his white half might keep him from voting Obama because of his black half.
The infomercial was a good pitch for swing voters and a great way to energize those who already support him.
10I have to wait until after work to watch it on Hulu today
11I love his laugh!
I was teary-eyed during the tv ad, too. Our canvassing team went to a bar last night to watch it. I was trying to hold back the tears when I saw the Ford-employed family, but when I saw someone else with tears in her eyes, I didn't stop them. I'm an emotional person and if I weren't already so dedicated to this man and his campaign, the personal touches would have swayed me.
12Both were perfect for what they were and what they were trying to get across. Man, I hope he wins.
13I love both of these men!
14he did great on both of them!
15Last night gave me the same feeling that the DNC gave me -- pride and pure energy -- it was a complete high. It made me feel like we could actually win. Both appearances we great in their own right.
16Kickin' booties citizen.
17I was expecting the infomercial to be potentially embarrassing and the Daily Show appearance to be awesome, but both went against my expectations. The DS segment was fine, but nothing terribly new. The infomercial, on the other hand, surprised me with its high production quality and ability to stir up emotions, even though we had heard a lot of that before too.
18He did a great job on both. I sincerely hope this seals it and gives him the win.
19I thought the informercial was great and it didn't attack McCain. It just gave us straight facts and true stories.
20I thought both were great in their own way, as stephley stated before. I think it was funny that he repeated Michelle's story, it seems like such a "dad" thing to do - to make corny joke and it doesn't necessarily go over well. It was cute
I liked the part about his white
half worried about voting for his black half. That was funny.
21I loved both. I thought the infomercial came out much better than I thought it would be. It was more like watching a PBS documentary or something. I didn't watch the DS when it aired, but I liked seeing his sense of humor in this clip.
22OMG I teared up too in the 30 min spot too!
When Obama was talking about his mother, and how she had passed away from cancer (I have lost a litte sister to cancer). Then they showed a scene from one of his huge rallies, and it made me think it was so sad his mother never got to see what her son accomplished, and may yet accomplish. Imagine the pride she would've felt!
23*sigh* i love Obama and Stewart!
24I just remember when the man talked about how he had worked all those years fr his pension and then had it cut from 1500 to 330 without realizing I cursed the world - it can really be unfair when you do all that is asked of you and what you are owed in return is taken away while some hot shot AIG exec gets a nice bailout and a executive retreat paid for by tax bailout money b/c "it was planned before they went bankrupt"
He did a really good job of showing his plan in not socialism, it is not a welfare state (and I disagree with some of his economic policies, but I admit, he showed them in a really good light) that these are people working hard and not getting what is owed to them - they are not asking for anyone to give them a handout while they chill at home.
25Really, to claim a man that old, who already has worked decades for a pension, is asking for a handout is unforgivingly ignorant of reality.
26Should be 'unforgivably' ignorant
27I think he did a good job with both. He stuck to the real issue of why he paid for the 30 minute spot. And when speaking with Stewart, Obama was more down to earth and enjoyable.
28His broad grin was cracking me up.
29Doesn't it Jude, his smile is huge and kind of childlike.
30Wasn't he so sweet when they showed Obama with his daughters during the infomercial? I forgot about that until now...he seems like such a great dad.
31Wasn't it*
32Hi All!
I am a Canadian a big supporter of Stephane Dion, the leader of the Liberal Party, whose ideas are on the same wavelength as that of the Democratic Party of your country. This past September, Stephan Harper called an illegal federal election and won a minority government. Harper takes his cues from your (awful) president George W.
The world could do without these conservatives. Their policies promote war, and corporate interests over the needs of families and the environment. Can you imagine - Canada has a Prime Minister that considers drilling for oil more pressing than protecting our country's drinking water! Do you want this for yourselves? Can you imagine turning on the tap and no water coming out? How do clean yourself? water is fundamental to survival, even more so than oil.
Please don't make the same horrid mistake that Canadians have made! Do not elect a conservative right-wing (nut) leader who has no respect for the rule of law, the environment, the poor.... you. Senator Obama is the precise change you need.
Your credit crunch disease has been caused by rich people allowing other rich people to borrow money by using your hard-earned savings as collateral! When you vote for Senator Obama - you are voting for yourself and your community. Believe me when I tell you every vote makes a difference...
Best of luck to the Democratic party!
Sincerely,
Meena
33Thanks for the advice Meena, we're trying!
34It just hit me after watching this vid for the third time, how cool it is that Barack came on the Daily Show this close to elections. When Jon Stewart said "our show is not a swing show," it made me realize he took time out of his schedule to amuse the choir. Clearly he didn't have to, he could have saved all his energy the the swing states and undecided voters. How nice
.
35meena thanks for the comment it was ....amusing. too bad it was completely from left field and misinformed.
36"it made me think it was so sad his mother never got to see what her son accomplished, and may yet accomplish. Imagine the pride she would've felt!"
That is very sad!
"he had worked all those years fr his pension and then had it cut from 1500 to 330 without realizing I cursed the world"
I am so glad he mentioned this! This is CRIMINAL in my opinion, and it happens all the time! How in the world can it be legal for a company to take the pensions that people have worked decades for, and then not give it back? HOW can our country allow this to happen?
