Last weekend I spent a giddy night with girlfriends just talking — you know the kind of night I’m talking about! In the midst of our conversation, one friend confessed that she’d never really seen her lady business before. Immediately, the other ladies launched into their own experiences on the matter. I couldn’t help but think of the Sex and the City episode where the girls try to convince Charlotte to check herself out in the mirror — even though she was incredibly uncomfortable, she went through with it!
Personally, I think the more knowledge you have about your body the better, but is grabbing a mirror over-the-top? Have you ever examined yourself down there? Or does the idea make you squirm?

Yeah, I have.
You have an obligation to know what your body normally looks like - so you can describe and tell when something is WRONG. And also so you know how everything works!
It pains me when grown women who've never looked at their va-jay-jays think that urine comes out of their *clitoris*...@_@
1I have; when I started sex ed in school, the anatomical diagrams were all either the cut-away side view variety, or a "head-on" (lol) variety. I thought it was stupid to learn my own anatomy from a picture, so when I went home, I grabbed a mirror and checked it out. I think it's important for people to know their own anatomy and how their body works, and for that part of your body, how else are you going to see it?
2Yes I have! I was curious, because I read somewhere that some women think they are ugly there? I mean... how can you compare? It looks... weird.
It's not too bad though! And ouch. Urine + clitoris is mmm... odd.
3Yep, mirror in hand after sex ed class too. Why study a picture when you can just look down?
4Of course...it's mine. I should know it to notice any changes to alert the gynecologist. Why would you let a man see what you haven't seen? He looks at his penis.
5In ten years of medical school and medicine, I have seen more vaginas than you probably care to know!
But, yeah, I have checked myself out. Admittedly, this is mostly because working in the medical profession has made me (and many others) paranoid, and I always need to check out any part of my body I think has something wrong with it!
6Good grief, why would you NOT look at yourself? Even if it's not for self-love, don't you need to look to put a tampon in? Though even as I say that, I can think of at least one friend who probably has never looked - or only in sneak peeks.
It makes me sad to think about women who think their vulvas are ugly. There's a line in *The Color Purple* from when Celie examines herself, about how she looks like a wet rose, and it's just lovely. If you stop and look at it, it's really quite beautiful and complex.
7There was a time I got all paranoid about my HPV and would check myself several times a day to look whether I'd grown genital warts. I didn't - but I sure did learn how I look down there, IN DETAIL!
8Uh - why wouldn't you? It would creep me out not knowing what I looked like!
9I hope people that squirm at the idea of looking at their of vagina aren't having sex. If you're not mature enough to face the reality and look of your own privates, you're not mature enough to be using them!
10Knowing what my hoo-ha looks like from a personal perspective is super-important... What if something changes and you don't know? You can't always tell by feel if something is going on with your body.
11Its yours!!! If you aren't willing to check out your goods, then why should anybody else! Take control of your own body!
12A do... For sure...
13This would seem like a legit thing if you were still pretty young, but it's sad to me that you would be a grown woman and have no idea at all- especially for the gynecological health reason. However, if you weren't very sexually active or wore pads rather than tampons, I guess I could see how you wouldn't know the details. I'm glad I know the details!
14I have. My "friend" is examined constantly for changes. I'm am super paranoid when it comes to illness.
15Its your lady businesss! you need to know waht it looks like so you can keep track to make sure you know whats going...no disesaes..cancers and etc
16I think it's a definite do. You should know what you look like and how everything works down there! I first got curious about this when I was ten, and I'm definitely older now and know some of my friends who have never even looked down there..
17That's like not knowing what your boobs or your ass looks like, it's totally normal.
18How else would you shave? :)~
19Oh gosh I remember the first time I checked I was 8 and I was so traumatized I seriously haven't done it again until two weeks ago.. and I'm 19 now. But I guess that's why I'm trying to get used to it.
I know I have to. It's just.. ew.
20HA ha Berlin that was the first thing that came to my mind, too!
21LOL
All women should know what they look like.
22Of course! You gotta know what's going on down there
23Yes I have!!
Its pretty too!! lol.
24I am sorry if i hear about anyone checking anything in the mirror I think of Fried Green Tomatoes first, not SATC.
25Yeah, I have and I agree with everyone else that it's important to look for yourself. It's just another body part, what's the difference?
26i can't believe girls could live their lives never seeing a part of their own body! i had a book about periods when i was younger and it encouraged the reader to look at themselves in the mirror. it also answered questions about the variety of shapes and angles...what's common. even discussing things like discharge. i feel lucky to have known information that otherwise i wouldn't have received anywhere else.
why would anyone feel afraid of themselves? you're body is YOU! and for anyone who shies away from themselves needs to be more accepting. love yourself, it's the only body you have.
27My mom encouraged this when I was a lil girl... How are you supposed to know if there is something wrong with it if you don't know what your healthy vagina looks like? Its so important just to make sure its all good down there especially if you are sexually active. Plus I'm just curious about who I am as a woman. Its a very healthy thing to practice and all woman should take a glance. I hate when people get grossed out about their own bodies.
28I don't understand how a grown woman can manage to go through most of her life without ever looking at HER OWN genitals.
Hell yes I know what I look like, I first checked around the time I hit puberty. It's not gross, it's you!
29Yeah I've seen my lady parts. I'm pretty conscious of what goes on down there. It's my body and I have to take care of it.
