Yesterday I got a friendly email from the Obama campaign asking me to take next Tuesday off. The campaign says it needs volunteers (no experience required) to make calls, knock on doors, and make sure voters get to the polls.
In many countries, election day is a holiday, or it falls on the weekend. But in 1845, Congress selected the Tuesday after the first Monday in November as the nationwide day for elections. Tuesday was chosen because farmers needed a day to travel to the polling place, a day to vote, and a day to get back. Factoring in the Lord's Day, that left Tuesday and Wednesday. Since Wednesday was market day, only Tuesday would work!
If it weren't for the 19th century agrarian society, Obama wouldn't have a need to ask volunteers to take a day off from work or school. Tell me — even on such short notice, would you take Nov. 4 off for your candidate?

My professor cancelled class on election day and I'll be doing voter protection!
I'm excited, but I'm a little sad I won't get to go crazy flipping between channels and refreshing my laptop all day waiting for results.
1I will be out on election day, knocking on doors and then being part of the "Comfort Teams" as the day goes on and the line gets longer to keep people comfortable so they don't give up.
2And my better half is going to be a poll worker!
3I actually took the 5th off. I have jury duty on the 4th. So sorry, O man. No can do. Belive me, I'd rather be out there working for you.
4A really cool thing they are doing in my city is cab drivers are taking the day "off" to drive people to the polls for free, all you have to do is call them and they'll pick you up and drop you off.
5I want to, but I have to save what little PTO I have left for my New Years trip.
6Nope -- I already voted (I was too excited and I couldn;t wait) but we do have an event that day at my job which means we get to come in late and go home early -- that's how we roll!!
7Now that I think about it, I should probably take the 5th off...depending on how it goes I may be drinking away my sorrows on Tuesday night!
8Yeah I was more in the line of thought of taking the 5th off
. Some of my classes
were canceled on the 4th so I'll probably get out and egg people on to vote.
9my school cancelled classes that day!! i kind of want to vote early in the morning and hope a flight to chicago to go to the rally in grant park since i get free flights from my dad, im really really tempted to do that and just take wednesday off...
10Oh I so wish my classes were canceled on the 4th!
11I'm thinking of taking the 5th off b/c either way the vote goes I'll probably be drinking away!
nope
12I'm in sales, so I don't have a set schedule. I'll probaly take the afternoon and go egg people too. I mean, urge people to go vote...
13I guess I'm the only one who thinks it's weird that a presidential candidate is asking people not to go to work, however great the cause is.
14Dave, I think ur job is too important, please don't bother your friends
Heidi, sometimes the end justifies the means (now everyone can call Obama a Marxist and a Machiavellian)
15zeze, loe that about the cab drivers.
16I mean, love that...
17I'm already off on election day. My office will be closed on election day. I won't sub that day either because schools are closed in MD.
18CNN is reporting that early voters are seeing "day-long lines" - which makes me wonder, how will people who have jobs vote? Seems like everyone will need the day off just to wait in line (I'm thinking Election Day NEEDS to be a national holiday, imagine not being able to vote b/c your boss says if you're late/gone one more time you are fired).
These lines have to hurt Obama, he has the newer, sporadic, and youth vote - not the most loyal of voters and the voters most likely to become complacent b/c of the news and the polls. If the media was really for Obama they should stop telling us how little of a chance McCain has.
19I start a new job on the 3rd. I'm not about to ask to take off on my second day. But if I were still at my old job, I'd do it.
20I went to vote today in DC and the line was INSANE. I only had an hour, so I just requested a mailed ballot & left. I recommend bringing some reading material with you when you go vote!!
21already got the day off months ago... i'm willing to do whatever the obama campaign asks me to - so if you live in a swing state expect to be getting a call from yesteryear!!
22My professor scheduled an EXTRA class that day, and I'm extremely upset. I'll be in class from 8am-5:30p.m.and it takes me an hour to get to school! I'm a little worried that I won't have time to vote because the polls will be so busy after people get out of work, so I'm going at 6am, and she will just have to deal with it if I'm late. Sorry, this class is just driving me crazy and she described doubling the length of time of the class from 2 to 4 hours as a "syllabus change." Grrr.
I'm helping out on Saturday at the phone bank, but I wish I could have done the attorney/law student volunteer activities, but whatever.
I think we should get election day instead of Columbus day off! Not that I got Columbus day off...
23why don't they have voting on a Saturday and why does it take so long?
24ze, your employer is required by law to give you a reasonable amount of time off to vote.
I hope people are going to get mail in ballots. So much easier/better/safer. Turned mine in today!!
25I would if i could...im already going to vote with two kids holding onto my hand! I would love to get out there and drag people by the hair..okay maybe not that. But i would help out!
26Since I don't have a job right now, I will be part of GOTV (Get Out The Vote). I've been volunteering every day for the last week!!
TrueSong, I'm on the comfort team too and my husband is a canvass captain. However, I think my role is actually going to be a new role of "interior" canvass captain, which will help signing people in and making sure canvass groups are better organized...basically an assistant to the canvass director!
27Mondaymoos--I want that pumpkin in your avatar. FOR SERIOUS.
Can't take the day off since I just took a few this week and last week, but I wish I could.
28TS, that's good to know, but reasonable time will do you no good if you need to stand in line 4-9 hours! people have reported 4 and 6 hour lines for early voting - and only 31% are early voters, imagine the insanity on Nov 4th!
29omg..hopefully it wont be that bad over here!
30zeze most states have more polling places open on election day than they do during early voting. So that may help.
31Georgia will have more early voting locations open on Monday and are extending voting hours.
32Already am!
33I'm glad I live in a small town. It'll be 10 minutes in line, and 6 hours in the bar...
34
35In response to an earlier comment about my comment, it doesn't make me think any less of Obama or add to the Marxist/Machiavellian/Communist/BS-of-the-day rumors; I just think it's strange to ask people not to go to work. I don't know.
36I got that email, and I just thought it was funny, because I had already planned to take that day off
It's more just his campaign getting overenthusiastic than anything else.
37Heidi - I was kidding
I was making fun of the extreme labels being applied so
liberally based on trivial similarities.
38Gotta love mail-in ballots
No line for me and the fiancee
He's sent his vote in last week. I
don't think I'd be asking people to go and vote, most people I know have mailed in their votes anyway
39I hadn't thought about it, but I'd like to be part of the "Comfort Teams" that True Song mentioned. My polling place is notorious for the lack of voting booths
I'd love to be a part of helping people hang in there. Maybe I could bring my dog as a distraction for
people who have to wait
I think I will!
40I actually work for the federal goverment and I'm pretty surprised that we don't get the day off so we can have plenty of time to vote and help out if we want to. Esp since I work in the executive branch, so technically the president is my boss
.
I also live in VA, so I have a feeling that election day around here is just going to be insane. We haven't been a battle ground state for a very long time.
41i want to get in on those "comfort teams" too. how did you get on that list, TS? when i signed up to volunteer for obama next tuesday, the only options i had were to drive to a swing state (can't do it cause it will take over 4 hours to get to nevada from here) or to phone bank all day.
42Awww Wren,I would totally hang in there longer if there was a cute dog entertaining me!
43YY, I don't know. One of the field organizers just mentioned it one day when I was in the office. Maybe they're not doing it in non-swing states? I would just ask. They were looking especially for people who could play and instrument or something, but they need untalented people (like me!) to pass out candy and stuff. : )
44In my opinion, it's utterly ridiculous to take the day off. It's pointless.
45Yesteryear, I wouldn't doubt the importance of being a caller. During primary season, there was a common issue people were having with their ballots, and the calls that went out on the election day were very important in getting clear instructions to people who might otherwise have been confused.
Also, calls made during the day are VERY important because it isn't persuasion calls, it is following up with people you know are supporters to make sure they were able to get to the polls. Sometimes voters need help, and they don't understand that there are people who can help them out.
46I'm from Spain and baffled. We vote on Sunday, there's no early voting and you don't have to wait. There might be some lines at certain hours but one hour, tops.
I think you should lobby to get it changed to a holiday, I just don't get that some people might not be able to vote because of the lines!
47We get the fourth as a holiday but since my boss will be off, I get a floating holiday - thinking of taking the 5th off. I assume I will be pulling an all nighter!
48I actually took off last month, as well as the day after election day. This election is so volitile I'm sure I won't be getting any sleep on the 4th either so why suffer on the 5th?
49LOTS of people are missing class.
