The New York City Council has voted 29-22 to change term-limit laws to allow Michael Bloomberg to run for a third term, but the royal battle is far from over.
In addition to securing federal Justice Department clearance, the city council's decision must survive various court battles. A lawsuit has been brought by public school teachers, and another by two council members. The city lawmakers explain that the officials who voted for the change get to run again, too, thus violating the city's conflict-of-interest law. The teachers think the change should be put to a referendum. In the 1990s, Ronald Lauder (heir to Estée Lauder) funded the two referendums instituting the term limits. Lauder now backs Bloomberg's bid for a third term.
Regardless of whether they support Bloomberg for another term, 89 percent of New York voters think term limits should be modified through a voter referendum, according to a new poll. Do you agree, or is an additional campaign the last thing NYC needs?

6I understand wanting to keep in a good Mayor (Is he a good Mayor? I don't know...) they're hard to find, but term limits are important in a democracy. Term limits keep one person from having to much power. Just see what lack of term limits do in say, South America. If he worthy enough to be asked to run again, then why doesn't he just run for a higher office?
7I never believed in term limits - if you don't think someone should run again then don't vote for them. I really like Bloomberg and am glad he is running again- and if my fellow New Yorkers feel he is wrong in changing the limit then they can vote for someone else.

Seriously I don't know anyone around me that doesn't think this is a good decision - I honestly think that we don't need term limits. I can't understand how if someone seems to be doing really well why we can't vote them in again and if they are screwing up - why we would not just vote for someone else??

I don't know anything aout NY politics, being from the West Coast, but what if it were a bad candidate that a large enough group of people were dumb enough to keep electing. I doubt this is the case in NY but it could be somewhere else potentially.
12Jessie but then there you go -the group was "dumb" enough to keep voting that person in. If a viable candidate ran to oppose that bad leader I am sure that voters in that area would vote for that person if their current leader was that bad.
(Pop- it definitely was a conflict considering that the council can run again this election too - not exactly the best group to decide to change the rules but seeing as this benefits me - I am not really too upset about it. I DO understand why other people think it is wrong but I personally think that despite the conflict it is a good decision.)
