The Mayor of Chicago estimates that the Obama election night party could cost the city as much as $2 million. The free and open-to-the-public lakefront party at Grant Park will require the city to beef up security; but the Obama campaign has agreed to reimburse seriously cash-strapped Chicago.
Down in Arizona, rumor has it that McCain might not even show up to his soiree. Supporters will be gathering at the Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix, but McCain plans to deliver remarks to a small group of reporters and guests on the hotel lawn, while the speech is broadcast to the party inside. Aides haven't ruled out a McCain cameo inside.
After Obama's impressive acceptance speech before almost 80,000 in Denver, I'm not surprised by his election night plans for himself and the public. What do you have planned for election night?

my aunt was talking about rounding up a group and going to obama's party in Grant Park. that place will be rockin' and I will miss it
1It will certainly be quite the crush. I will be perfectly happy to watch the results come in from the comfort of my own home.
2Are any of the Chgo Sugars goings?
3It'll be great when McCain wins....
4One might say -- it looks like McCain is expecting to be defeated. Why not have a huge bash and kick off Palin 2012 run??
5Well the party is for win or lose. It is just a celebration and a chance for the City to show support to one of our own.
6We're having a party/support group at my house, depending on the results...maybe we should make it a costume party
.
7I'd be nervous to go to something like that. What if your candidate lost or there was some news about fraud or something? Could be a riot!
8I have a friend that works for an event planning company in Chicago, and he was telling me "YOU WANT TO BE THERE". That was all he could say.
goodness knows no matter where I am, or who wins, I will be enjoying a cocktail...either in celebration or disappointment.
Wow...just realized that after the election, I might have a lot more free time on my hands.
9I probably will find out after its over lol..kinda like the world series..I get too emotional with the ups and downs! ..Just tell me when its over
10I'm moving to Chicago next weekend!! I'd love to go.
11Are you really moving here javsmav ?
12well, I'm moving to the suburbs (my new job is out there), but my boyfriend lives in Chicago, so I'll be there often enough and his apartment is my second home. I'm so excited to move!
13Well whether your a suburbanite or city - Congratulations and Welcome to Chicago!!!!
14Thanks!
15Yay for you, Javsmav! Be sure to subscribe to Time Out Chicago. It's only $20 for a year and it has great info on restaurants, shops, culture, etc. (Plus, a certain Sugar used to work there, ahem.
)
16Congrats Javsmav. I was a chi-town suburbanite from 97-01. I loved it there and still miss it sometimes.
17ok. i have to call a flag on the play here. chicago/obama are going to spend $2MM on a party and the question to the forum is, "what do you have planned for election night?" yet, on the previous page, we're being asked how we feel about what the GOP spent on sarah palin's stylist? i hope you're kidding.
18Just the two of us and a serious bottle of champagne, on ice, and corked until the networks call it.
19Kathryn, obviousily they aren't. I'm thinking no one else sees the irony of that.
20I might go.
I get really nervous in huge crowds. I'm a Chicago sugar though...and
you can bet that no matter where you are in the city if Obama wins we will be celebrating!
21Harm, maybe there will be bars or places with a roof nearby? I can't imagine willingly standing in that crowd, but it would be neat to be close enough to hear them go nuts if/when Obama is officially declared the winner.
22I'll be in Chicago over New Year's. That's as close to this party as I want to get...
23I am a bit sad, my job is sending me to a really small conservative town that night a few hours away from home. I'll be missing the huge partying going down in Boulder.
24The only partying will be happening at my house when my boyfriend loses his bet to me and has to cook dinner for me for an entire week. I'm betting on McCain to win and he's betting on Obama. Clearly, he's the optimist in our relationship. A cool $2 mill is incredible to spend on a swank soiree but hey, when you're an elitist, you know ...
anything goes.
25I live about 15 minutes north of Grant Park and I'm going to try really, really hard to make it to Obamafest!
26Thanks, Bella! I'll check that out.
