Ellen DeGeneres Slams Sarah Palin on Gay Marriage Ellen DeGeneres gave an emotional plea on behalf of gay marriage on her show Wednesday, and included remarks targeting Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin: "I don't know if you saw this, but vice presidential candidate, Governor Sarah Palin says she's that in favor of a federal ban on gay marriage," Ellen said. "Basically she wants to change the constitution. So if you're wondering, I'm sure you are, how I feel about this . . . I don't like it, I don't like it. I don't agree. Maybe it's because I'm gay that I think we should all be equal. But I feel that we're all equal."

Ellen shows a lot of restraint. She is much more polite about the issue than I would be.
1Ellen is typically pretty good-natured, which is why people like her so much.
2An amendment against gay marriage has no place in the constitution.
3I'm always impressed by Ellen and her professionalism. She could teach Rosie a thing or two..
4Wow..she really is going all the way for this election! shes the best!
5She could also teach Elizabeth Hasselback a thing or two too...
6I just voted NO on prop 8 -- I hope others will do the same.
7Well I meant Rosie when she had her own talk show.
On a show like the View I don't expect them to have much professionalism since the main focus is discussion of news events.
8Well why should the government be involved with that? If we really want to be fair, the government should only recognize civil unions (gay or straight couples) and then marriages only take place in churches. But unfortunately this will never happen.
9Eh if The View's main focus is discussion of news events..shouldn't they be MORE professional than a talk show host who talks about everything? But agreed the View is like that druken family at Thansgiving Dinner that's screaming at each other....I just don't like Hasselback and find that she doesn't really think for herself...and doesn't come off as intelligent about anything really....
10yea they should be but i think thats asking to much of all the idiots on that show
11Is the world round? I don't know. I'm not sure. I've never looked into it.
12Ellen is the epitome of class. People are willing to listen to her more than others because she doesn't harp on it. She very rarely even talks about being gay. She's gay, but it doesn't completely define her. I respect her so much.
13HF yet is sad that other people, not saying you, but other people will like and respect her because she is funny and polite and may even think her and Portia cute, but will still support a constutional amendment banning gay marriage. Its like what more do you need? If exposure to uncorrupt gay people just living their lives being normal isn't enough for you, what do say to that? Instead people will group her into some sort exception category, and continue on with their prejudices
.
14I'll never understand why people are so concerned about keeping gays from getting married. To the extent that they would add it to the very constitution that this republic is based on!
Do we really want anti-homosexuality to be the written in the basis of our country? It's outrageous. When you widdle down marriage, it's really a financial contract. People should be free to enter into any contract they please. Keep your anti-gay bigotry out of my constitution, Sarah Palin.
15Oh I completely agree with you Jessie. Trust me I'm all for gay marriage. I still think Ellen is great and opens up minds that might not open up otherwise. Even thinking she is an exception to the rule is a step in the right direction towards tolerance and then towards acceptance.
Organic I can happily and unequivocally say that I agree with you!!!! I have never been able to say that before. Let's have a party!
16Are you sure I wasn't being satirical?
17Nope. I can tell. You believe in the constitution too strongly. It rings true.
18My God! I agree with Organic too! What's going on?
19Marriage is a financial contract, Organic? Maybe it is for some people (which is sad), but my marriage is certainly much more than that. It's a sacred union between my husband and I. Holy matrimony between a man and a woman, just as it should be.
20prncss-great! YOu have a great relationship. The government, though, doesn't care if you're still making eyes at each other or if you only speak once a month. As far as a legal standpoint, marriage is a contract.
21Hell's bells! Me too!
"Do we really want anti-homosexuality to be the written in the basis of our country?"
This is exactly my thinking--okay, social attitudes take a while to change, and I need to accept that, and not push my "progressive" views down peoples' throats. But do we really want evidence of our bigotry in our federal Constitution!?
Ellen is so positive! And I remember when I first found out she was gay, it was such a scandal, I was so offended and my family wouldn't allow her show in our house. But she's almost like a barometer of public perception of homosexuality. I think ten years later, society as a whole is more accepting, at least I hope so. And I am so happy she is doing so well. But maybe I just grew up in the last ten years.
22What about Holy Matrimony for two people in love? What does gender have to do with it?
23"It's a sacred union between my husband and I."
And how exactly does allowing gay people to get married change that?
24"I need to accept that, and not push my "progressive" views down peoples' throats."
Um- I didn't mean online, of course, I meant in person.
25Amen, TS. And I'm sorry, but if holy matrimony can be between people like Rush Limbaugh (God, who would marry that guy?) and Jennifer Lopez (two times? three times?) and their respective partners, than two lesbians or gay men should have the same rights with their unions...
26Me agreeing with Org?????
Hold on a sec
27I realize that my opinion is different than others posting here, but I would hope that you can be respectful and not insult me. If you want to question my views and know why I feel the way I do then go right ahead. I will give you an honest answer, whether I think the majority will like it or not. So yes, I do have a great marriage, and I consider myself to be very blessed. I was lucky to find a man who is intelligent and kind and funny and shares the same values that I do. And I do believe that marriage should only be allowed between a man and a woman. If gays are allowed to marry then what group will start demanding their rights next? Polygamists?
28I love Ellen. And I love that she can bring people like McCain onto her show and STILL keep her cool.
29"Is the world round? I don't know. I'm not sure. I've never looked into it."
HA! I remember that being said.
I like Ellen...and I hate The View.
30Last time I checked, I don't think polygamists were asking for the same rights. I could be wrong, but it's not a very good comparison.
Also, I'm just of the mind that the government should butt out of any marriage, heterosexual or homosexual, so I'm not trying to unsult anyone's views. Hey, I'm Catholic, and so is my bf, and we want to get married too, in a church with a priest and all that, but I don't see how giving gay people the right to marry infringes on what we get to do as man and woman. What I do in my relationship is no one else's business.
31I really admire Ellen, she is very classy and professional. I agree hausfrau, I wish Rosie would take a lesson from her (even though I know you weren't talking about her time on The View). You can be passionate about issues that matter to you without being obnoxious.
32Ya know...The Flat Earth Society has some pretty interesting evidence against a round early...
33And in early I mean earth
It's been a rough day...
34The Rush Limbaugh example got me thinking. Even murderers who kill their first wives have the right to remarry in this country. Rapists can marry, we don't deny the right to any other pair of consenting adults, unless they are brother and sister or mother and father (I believe in some states first cousins can marry). It boggles my mind that someone who kills his first wife, could remarry and enter into that "holy union," but two gay people could not.
35Or people who have been married three or four times can remarry. Liz Taylor got married like what 7 times? Divorce rates are almost up the fifty percent. Adulators can stay married even though they don't hold the vows sacred. People can get married for convenience, to become a citizen or for money, but a homosexual couple can't marry for love. It makes no sense.
36Excellent points Kas and Snow!
What about Death Row inmates? Can they get married as well?
37Yes. I think prisoners can even marry and have conjugal visits. If that isn't messed up, I don't know what is! I'm checking on death row inmates...
38No conjugal visits, but yes, can marry.
39Yes, they can. And hopefully, someday, they'll be able to marry each other.
40"a round early" - - I'm glad you corrected that. I paused for a long time there, reading and re-reading.
41"Yes, they can. And hopefully, someday, they'll be able to marry each other."
42I'm really not sure where my fingers were going with that
Like I said, it's been a
long day!
43If prop 8 passes!
44Errrr...DOESN'T pass.
Jeez. I'm gonna quit while I'm ahead.
45Thanks em, for your respectful and pleasant response. I think it's very important for people to always show respect for one another, even when their views are different. And I haven't felt insulted on this thread, which is unusual. Normally when I post my opinion I end up feeling like Elisabeth Hasselbeck on the view
. And I want to say that even though I can't honestly say that I hope you'll be able to marry,
I can honestly tell you that I hope that you and your partner enjoy a long and happy life together. I think every human being deserves that.
46Kas- you thought of some really good examples! Spousal abusers is another obvious one to add to the list. Also, 80 year old Hugh Hefner could marry one of his 18 year old girlfriends. In Vegas, after knowing each other for an hour.
47em is straight prncssann...not that I think it should matter, but clearly it does to you.
48Prncssann1 for all your paragraphs of talk you still haven't said why you don't think gay people, such a my-awesome-self, should be allowed to marry. I would interested in hearing a nonreligious answer.
I say nonreligious, not because I hate whatever religion you may or may not be, but because I assume your taking the separation of church and state in you answer.
49You could be a pedophile, rapist, 7 times divorced, wife-killing, death row convict and get married.
Okay, okay...I'm up late writing a paper, and these are the things I think of.
