Today's New York Times outlined the known state of all four candidates' health. While it dedicated a section to each, the report clearly raised new questions about John McCain's chances of melanoma recurrence.

Here is a look at how the paper of record summarized the medical records:
- McCain: Wounds from untreated injuries and torture while a POW mean McCain may eventually need joint replacements. Inconsistencies about the severity of McCain's melanoma skin cancer, make the probability of recurrence unknown. A reclassification of severity, called for by some experts, would change his statistical odds for survival at 10 years from about 60 percent to 36 percent. He has had no recurrence for eight years; but the 10th anniversary, which would be in 2010, is an important benchmark.
- Obama: Obama’s campaign released a one-page letter from his doctor citing Obama’s “excellent health," last May and a series of test results last week. Obama has one medical issue, which is a difficulty in stopping smoking. Obama began smoking 20 years ago, trying several times since to quit. Obama, who decided to quit before running for president, has used Nicorette gum “with success," according to his doctor.

- Palin: No records have been released regarding Palin.
- Biden: Biden had emergency surgery in 1988 for a brain aneurysm and elective surgery for a second one. The campaign released 49 pages of medical records to last week showing that he was healthy, but did not indicate whether Biden had been tested in recent years to detect any new aneurysm.
The paper, which says it routinely investigates the major candidates' health, evidently feels the chill of the McCain campaign's cold shoulder — the Times was excluded from the restricted and semisecretive review of McCain's records in May, and has been prohibited from asking questions during reporter conference calls. The article maintains that when health information has been withheld in the past, it usually means the candidates are hiding something. Do you think candidates should allow for a complete airing of their health?

Oh dear..
1I read about this in my local newspaper as well.
And I second your "oh dear" Harmony...
2"no records have been released regarding Palin"
Big surprise there!
But seriously, I do think it is important that we know each of the candidates' health histories. Now that I know Barack Obama ha sthe chance of getting lung cancer, I will look at Joe Biden even MORE closely. Luckily, I am confident that he can run the country if need be.
3I third the "oh dear" and follow it up with a "ugh, again?"
4I'll second your "ugh, again?" and follow that up with a "only 15 more days..."
5I don't think the candidates should have to open their medical records. We should be voting for the ticket that aligns with our values the best it both the pres/vice pres candidates are to your liking then that's what you should vote for. I think it infringes in an area of privacy that is sacred even for a person running for the highest office in the land.
6values = Politcal views sorry about that
7HONESTLY -- were on health AGAIN?!
8Two more weeks and it will all be over!
9blue - ooooh... too rich for my blood!
10Good thing I'm feelin lucky...goin to Vegas Friday!
11im so jealous! i was supposed to go on saturday but our trip got cancelled
12Why do we keep reporting on this same issue?
13Awww...sorry haus! Gamble much? I'll play a dollar for you
I haven't been to Vegas in a while...some friends are getting married
We're so
excited!
14I cannot see Obama smoking for some reason, seems unlike him. Eww, good luck to him quitting, it is a disgusting habit!
15Quitting is hard -- I hope he quit for good. My mother has been trying to quit for years.
16I LOVE to gamble. I'm not very good at it, but I try really hard and the male dealers always help me out!
Good Luck to you Blue! I hope you come back with the big bucks! You're so money baby!!
17It's like everyone is running out of new things to say. Oy vey.
18*"Everyone" meaning the press, not the lovely ladies (and few gents) here.
19Very true jude!
20So true. I read the article in the NYTimes and I don't think I learned anything new.
21I just heard Sean Hannity say that Obama admitted to using cocaine...hadn't heard that one! Not saying it's true...anyone else heard this?
22Meringue, I think Obama wrote about that in his book. It's not really new information, or something he tries to hide. And honestly, I'm not sure why he would.
23Ah, I haven't read his book...I just hadn't heard it...
24I think he wrote about it in "Dreams of my Father". He certainly wouldn't be our first drug using president. I think that is why no one is really making an issue out of it.
25Meringue, I haven't read his books either, I heard about it on a TV special.
There's been so much focus on the economy and foreign affairs this election that I haven't really heard either candidate talk about drugs. I'd really like to hear about their positions.
26agreed...it would be an interesting discussion though...
27I think they'd probably agree about most things. Maybe that's another reason we don't hear about it.
28I'm not sure what's so surprising about Palin being uncooperative. That's kind of her thing these days. Why would anyone want a potential president that is inaccessible? As for McCain, his age is a rather common discussion among my friends and I. He reminds me of Chenney and all of his health issues. The presidency is stressful enough and having bad health on top of it doesn't benefit the president nor the country.
29his mother is in her 90s. longevity is obviously on his side. plus, it isn't like he has stage iv melanoma.
i agree with bastylefilegirl, though. do we really need to know medical history? it's as if these days, candidates can't even have a booger in their nostril without someone freaking out about it.
30His father died at 70
31Come on, folks. McCain made his health a big issue when he chose Palin.
32Palin is adorable. I hope she gets to be president next.
33Qualities of a good president: adorableness.
34I know a family that owns a pit bull, and they think she is adorable. Seriously.
35I think pit bulls are adorable!
36Especially Daddy. I love Daddy.
37Janneth can't come on right now, but this is her roboblogger saying that we are frightened of pit bulls.
38[Qualities of a good president: adorableness.]
For BUSH -- it was "We can have a beer with him"
39Pits are psycho!
40They are not 'psycho'. People are psycho, and they mistreat them and train them to be agressive and violent. If trained right, pit bulls can be sweet, loving, gentle dogs.
41*aggressive
42Dreamsugar, I know that you and I could have some good fun going out for a beer with W.
43What does that have to do with his ruined presidency, that's the thing.
Pitbulls have historically been bred to kill rats and to fight other dogs. I am not blaming them per se, but this is why there is danger associated with the breed.
44"They are not 'psycho'. People are psycho, and they mistreat them and train them to be aggressive and violent. If trained right, pit bulls can be sweet, loving, gentle dogs."
I couldn't agree with you more Mich!
I worked in the veterinarian field for 8 years. Never had a bad encounter with a pit bull. And I've been bitten (or nearly bitten) by many dogs. 90% of the dogs that have tried to attack me are Chihuahuas. Go figure.
45Genetic predisposition.
46It makes you feel sorry for the breed.
Chihuahuas, wow.
47Janneth, there are many, many breeds of dogs that have historically been bred to hunt, fight, and protect. However, they have to be trained to act on those tendencies.
I won't say that pit bulls aren't dangerous. They're a powerful breed and need capable handlers. In the wrong hands they can hurt people. However, they are not 'psycho' by nature.
Like Blue said about chihuahuas, there are plenty of vicious little dogs, but nobody calls them "psycho" because they can't do as much physical damage.
48Janneth I would argue that Cocker Spaniels have been bred to kill small animals as well.
Most people think they're wonderful, loving dogs. I think they're inbred ankle-biters, and 10% of the dog bites/attacks I've experienced have been from them.
49[They are not 'psycho'. People are psycho, and they mistreat them and train them to be agressive and violent. If trained right, pit bulls can be sweet, loving, gentle dogs]
Sorry -- just going by person experience.
My neighbor had what they called a harmless loving pit. She was outside loose one day. A little boy was riding his bike. That harmless, loving pet killed that kid in front of my eyes -- my neighbor's son was trying to restrain the dog -- but the kid died of his injuries on the way to the hospital. This was a loving pet.
My cousin's dog bit into his daughter's face for no reason at all. She was 3 and just sitting there playing with her dolls and the psycho dog snapped. Another loving family pet.
