After Colin Powell's thorough endorsement of Barack Obama yesterday on Meet the Press the reactions and analysis flew in the media and your comments. Here are some of the standout reactions:
- Michelle Malkin called "Powell’s embrace of Barack Obama is a triumph of hope over reality," but is careful to say she doesn't think it's an issue of race. "It’s Obama’s social liberalism, not his skin color, that attracts Powell most."
- Rush Limbaugh and Pat Buchanan didn't come to the same conclusion, saying, "I am now researching his past endorsements to see if I can find all the inexperienced, very liberal, white candidates he has endorsed," and "look would Colin Powell be endorsing Obama if he were a white liberal Democrat..." respectively.
- Over on Townhall, they link the endorsement to the importance Powell puts on the opinion of the media elite saying, "But what his endorsement highlights again is that this race isn't just about left vs. right, liberal vs. conservative. It's about elites vs. normal, everyday Americans."
To see what McCain had to say and what happens next, read more.
- Time focuses on the military-esque strategy behind the endorsement, and the Times comments on its contribution to Powell's legacy.
- McCain said in response to Powell's assertion that Obama is qualified to be president, "We have a respectful disagreement."
Obama has welcomed Powell to the trail and assured him a role as adviser, though Powell has so far said he has no plans to campaign.
What do you think of the reactions? Are any of them right on?

I never like when people use the race association, it's a weak argument anyway. Powell's decision isn't all that shocking, maybe it seems so because it's a move so late in the campaigns. IMO Lieberman supporting McCain was pretty shocking, but happened with less controversy.
1I think that there are already enough posts on this, dealing with just this, and we need other stories on here besides repetive ones. There has GOT to be more news out there!
2So...when black/Asian/Hispanic/women/other minorities stick together, it's because of our race or sex. But, when Kerry chose Edwards for his running mate, or when Bush chose Cheney...it's not because two white guys are just "lookin' out for each other", right? Cry me a river, Limbaugh and Buchanan--they're both pathetic and still think they're relevant. Sad.
Also, can someone please enlighten me about the "media elite"? I can't wrap my liberal brain around it.
I'm pretty glad that Powell is not going to be campaigning for Obama, just because that (IMO) makes it seem like a more solid, real endorsement rather than a stunt to get his name back in the news. (Not that I'm saying Powell would do that, but hopefully y'all know what I mean).
3[Rush Limbaugh and Pat Buchanan]
Well I don't expect much from them -- ANYTHING to taint the endorsement. WOW that tells you just how powerful the endorsement was.
4You have to wonder if it was about race, wouldn't Colin have endorsed Obama months ago. I remember Colin saying he would not vote for McCain just b/c he has been a friend for 25 yrs, or Obama just b/c he is black. He made his case yesterday, and you either take it as Powell's truth or you don't. Either way it's a powerful endorsement.
5Rush Limbaugh can go f**k himself!! I am so over the whole black thing, noone's ever said people have endorsed MCain cos he's white.
6And some have!
7What CaterpillarGirl said...
8Ditto to CG's comment. I want the story making fun of Biden's three letters, J-O-B-S. Seeing as we got stories on all of Palins. And tha is just one of tons Biden has given us. We get reports on how many people attend BO's rallies. When he vacations, etc.
9From now on we should make canidates hide out behind a screen, king of like "The Dating Game" that way we know when a US General (along with a number of other well known life long Republicans, some more right than Powell ever was) picks the black guy we know it wasn't because of his skin tone.
I am soooooooo sick of this election and all the dead horses being beaten by this election.
10This is what makes me laugh when people diminish how strong racism still is in the world today, why are people so afraid of people of other races?
11It's like "Read my lips, no new taxes..."
12if i were a republican/conservative, i'd be arguing against claiming that rush limbaugh's reaction is even valid. will a conservative with balls please stand up and denounce this drug-riddled, blowhard, cancer-of-a-man, PLEASE?!!!
13No one is praising him. Must we denounce him? Why?
14YY - I never listen, read, or have anything to do with Rush. I think he's a wacko.
15[Ditto to CG's comment. I want the story making fun of Biden's three letters, J-O-B-S. ]
Isn't that what your group is for????
16Well, given that the lefties have several groups to praise the left yet still get the majority of the coverage here, no, that isn't what it is for.
17Thats right Dream! We should round up all the conservatives and put them in these intern... I mean, "working programs".
18The day that I take Rush Limbaugh's comments with any kind of seriousness will be the day that Sarah Palin is elected unanimously to be the President of the world.
But seriously, I want those people to tell me what the difference between black and white people are, besides skin color. Please effing tell me because last time I checked, I was black, I hate the majority of rappers out there, I own several Britney Spears albums, and rampantly articulate an extended proper English vocabulary.
Race is a figment of people's imagination that they let run wild and control their lives. There are too many "whites who act 'black'" and "blacks who act 'white'" (I seem to belong to the latter group). How long is it going to take people to realize that both groups go to the same dentists, both have all the same biological aspects, both have members who vary phenotypically, both have idiotic beings who make the group look bad, and both have misconceptions of each other.
Why, in this day and age, with so many "racially mixed" people, and so many "interracial" couples, as well as people who in the past have been "passing" for whatever "race" that they are not.
I'm not expecting people to be utopian in ideals. However, I'm expecting people, especially college educated people, to STOP looking at bullsh*t factors such as "race" and determining how qualified or how successful a person is/is going to be because of how dark their skin is.
If they want to keep factoring that in, they might as well damn all the Orange people who live in tanning beds and reside in beach towns (think the O.C.).
SMH.
19White, male, step-child, republicans playing the 'race' card...there's some progress in the wrong direction...but nevertheless...
20sorry maybe i wasn't clear - i don't necessarily mean on here (but thanks haus!), i mean in the media - in the broader political sphere.
i'd like to see a republican politician/pundit, say something like RUSH LIMBAUGH DOES NOT SPEAK FOR ME. he represents everything that's wrong with politics today - and i'll even venture to say that his scare tactics and misinformation campaign represent a lot of what went wrong with mccain's campaign.
21hey just tryin to help!
22i've heard more conservative pundits say that those far right people don't represent them, but i don't think they've called him out by name.
however, you might be a bit off about the mccain connection, from what i understand Rush is not a mccain fan.
23[Thats right Dream! We should round up all the conservatives and put them in these intern... I mean, "working programs".]
FINALLY -- a conservative that GETS IT!!
24[Rush is not a mccain fan.]
Not a McCain fan but doesn't hesitate to support him -- unlike Powell who gave it some thought.
25well said ladychaos.
26Dream I didn't realize that you truly embrace fascism! I'm glad you're honest about it. That's important.
27IMO, the best thing we can do is ignore a comment from the fringes from both sides. Now the only argument is how far left or right are to be considered fringe elements.
28I didn't even know Colin Powell was black. What defines being black?
29The marvel of this election will be how Obama became "elite" and McCain became the "common man."
Honestly, McCain is so far to the left that Powell is practically choosing between two liberals at this point!
I think he laid out his reasons well, but we all knew it would be picked apart, and surely enough...
30You and me both, Sticker1.
31It's funny to me, that Limbaugh, Malkin and Townhall can't come up with stronger rebuttals - it's race, it's elitism - they can't counter with 'No, McCain has better ideas, and here they are' because the Republicans can't sell people on more McCain/Bush. All they can do day after day, is to try and scare or divide people.
32They got nothing.
If you listen to more than just soundbites offered by other media outlets they do. Mark Davis went exhaustingly through every sentence of the endorsement. Rush is currently.
33"All they can do day after day, is to try and scare or divide people."
So much for reaching across the aisle, eh?
34I have a question, what do you define being black? (anyone who wants to answer)
35"All they can do day after day, is to try and scare or divide people."
Well from a position of the very far left and not much digging, I can understand how it would appear that way. But its simply not the case.
36bella i'm pretty sure it has to do with how you define yourself... that's how the census counts it at least.
37Thanks, YY - I just wanted to know what others thought.
38People shouldn't have to dig to learn what a candidate offers them - and notice all you did was exaggerate my political position and question my research, you didn't actually say 'well, McCain offers this...' Cuz he's got nothing.
39You didn't say for one of us to tell you. You made a broad statement about the people being discussed.
40wow i'm really disappointed to chose to behave like that.
i would think after reading my comments for months and KNOWING that i've stated his policies before that you'd see how wrong you are about that last part.
but thats cool, if it makes you feel better to make mccain out to be the boogey man, thats fine.
41Bella, socially it seems that anyone who is a mix of white and any other race is considered the other race. Obama could have started out pointing to his grandparents and mother and said 'I'm white' but he would have been written off as delusional.
42I've never understood that.
Amazing how liberals, rich and poor alike, tend to get painted as elitist.
Who wants to take a stab at making a distinction between a liberal elitist view and conservative elitist view? Or wait...are there no elitist conservatives?
Let's start by defining the word elite:
1. A group or class of persons or a member of such a group or class, enjoying superior intellectual, social, or economic status: "In addition to notions of social equality there was much emphasis on the role of elites and of heroes within them" (Times Literary Supplement).
432. The best or most skilled members of a group: the football team's elite.
quite honestly i'd rather politicians not spoon feed us every bit of information.
if its far too difficult for someone to pick up a newspaper or go to a website, then i'd rather they just didn't vote.
44Soundbytes? I don't know, Rush himself is the one who dashed off an email immediately following the endorsement claiming it was based on race. If he didn't want that to be his "soundbyte" he could have waited until today to review the entire endorsement on his show.
It's going to be extremely difficult to pick the endorsement apart. Other than saying, "I disagree that Obama has a better understanding of economic policy," what would you say? I don't get how you can condemn Powell for the views he chose- even if you disagree with his conclusions, he does have a rational, well-thought out basis for him. What do people expect, a thesis?
I mean, I'm not going to ask every white supporter of McCain to justify his views to prove to me that he isn't voting based on skin color!
I'd say this is probably the end of Rush's illustrious career, but my Uncle is going to need someone to comfort him with angry white man views after the election ends.
45"Angry white man"
46This is nothing compared to things Rush has said in the past. It is certainly not the end of his career.
47Ah, a double reverse, good move Haus. But if we did review we'd find that conservatives spend more time painting Obama as a false messiah, a terrorist, or a socialist. The most we hear about McCain is that he's not Bush Three, although I must admit, it's never a very convincing argument.
48I don't even understand what there is to argue about. Powell spelled out his reasons for why Senator Obama is his choice for President over Senator McCain.
It's so easy for people to say "well, they both categorize themselves as African-American so BOOM, that's the real reason". And coming from an overly egomaniacal bigot like Rush Limbaugh...I'm not even surprised. So do we assume that Joe Lieberman is ONLY endorsing McCain because they both have fair skin!?! Let's just continually boil intellectual reasoning down to the lowest common physical denominator why don't we.
49Of course it could be if the "Fairness Doctrine" is ever passed. Fasism.
