Rachael Maddow is to Keith Olbermann as Stephen Colbert is to Jon Stewart. And just like Stephen, Rachel's new pseudo-Countdown spinoff is acquiring a fan base potentially more dedicated than its predecessor's. This weekend's New York Times Magazine caught up with the Stanford and Oxford grad-turned-progressive-MSNBC host, visiting her home in western Massachusetts where she lives with her partner Susan.
Some items to look forward to:
- Rachel, a TV personality, has no TV.
- Some of Rachel's favorite objects include: a squirrel sculpture, four kinds of mustard from her fridge (“I am a mustard person"), a sneaker, two ashtrays from the Watergate hotel, and her 7-year-old red Ford pickup.
- Fictional character she identifies with: "Wally Cleaver. Cause he is a dork.”
- If her show doesn't make it Rachel has a backup. "I am a hobbyist bartender. I have a a liquor cabinet. I research classic drinks from the golden age of American cocktails and I make them for me and Susan.”
- Rachel's favorite movie? The Manchurian Candidate, original version.

well i think that it's not a bad thing to have this additional personality on the air. i've seen her show in the listings, but i've never actually paid attention to it. i think that it's more because i don't know what her take is on everything, and i don't always enjoy changing it up since i'm kind of opinionated myself on things. i'll have to check her out now since you've brought her to my attention.
1She's fantastic! And I like Olbermann and all, but Maddow is a lot calmer, even when interviewing really ridiculous people.
2I really like Rachel Maddow a lot. She is a breath of fresh air. I like Olberman as well.
3i like rachel maddow, too. her show is of course not unbiased, but its entertaining and it's clear that she's intelligent AND can interview a guest (um, oxford anyone?).
also, random fact, it turns out she grew up about 2 miles from me in a little unincorporated town called castro valley, california - which in the late 80s/early 90s, when she would have been in high school, was one of the most conservative and homogenously white pockets of the otherwise ethnically and politically diverse bay area. ill bet that helped her form some of her liberal opinions. everyone i knew who grew up there got the hell out as soon as they turned 18.
4I love Maddow's style.. she is casual and friendly funny calm. You feel like you are somewhere talking to her when we watch her show..sharing a laugh. And I love when she debates events with Pat Buchanan (as she calls him her surrogate uncle). Their views are usually polar opposites but they always keep it civil and respectful and interesting.
I loved how she made David Frum look like a total tool by being nice while calling him out on his ridiculous stance.. brilliant.
And once a guest via satalite said at his closing "thank you sir" to Rachel, you could see the started realization on his face of what he had just said. But when the cut to Rachel she had her same as always sly smile and said "You're welcome and I get that all the time".
Love her.
5That's great Ima I am sorry that I missed it.
6I adore Rachel Maddow! She's really interesting and witty, and I really enjoy her show.
7I love her grace.
8HUGE HUGE fan. She also doesn't shy away from having tough opposing guests on her show.
9I love this lady!!!
[Rachel, a TV personality, has no TV.]
And much like her -- I had no TV for more than a year. I just broke down and signed up Friday for cable.
10" And I love when she debates events with Pat Buchanan (as she calls him her surrogate uncle). Their views are usually polar opposites but they always keep it civil and respectful and interesting."
I agree. It cracks me up that her segment with him has the headline "It's Pat"!
I really, really like her show. She is very level headed and focuses on facts and issues instead of petty drama. When Olbermann over dramatizes his stories, it makes him so much less credible. Rachel lets the power of the facts speak for themselves.
11No, not a fan.
12I've listened to Rachel Maddow on XM, and I don't care much for her style. She is what I equate as the liberal version of Rush. I don't care much for him either.
13
14I've never heard Maddow accuse any candidate's wife of murder or insult ethnic groups, so I'm not sure how she's like Rush - I'll just watch her show more often to see.
15How in the WORLD is Rachel Maddow like Rush?! Rofl...
16Rachel Maddow is nothing like Rush. I've listened to her radio show and enjoyed her MSNBC as a guest. I was really glad to her she was getting her own show. I watch her a lot, usually the second airing.
17Lili - I was meaning that she is about as far left as he is right, and she is just about as rude to her more conservative guests as Rush is to his leftist guests.
18If maddeningly polite= rude maybe...
But of course she is very to the left, that doesn't mean she is anything like Rush. She does not say inflammatory things, and she is incredibly logical and reasonable. I mean, I bet Pat Buchanan appears more on her show than on Rush's!
19I've listened to her, and she may sound logical from your perspecive, but she doesn't from this side of the aisle. Also, I've listened to her beat up on "guests" that she has philosophical differences with.
20Yes she's slanted way to the left, yes she uses satire on her show and a slightly bemused, joking tone, but she definitely does not beat up her guests:

Classic Maddow.
Also- you say she isn't logical, but I disagree. There is a great deal of difference between her getting into a tizzy that Palin can plainly lie "this report clears me from any HINT of wrongdoing," and Rush singing, "Barack the magic n*gro." Maddow and Limbaugh may intend to serve similar functions, but they are very, very different people.
21"she is just about as rude to her more conservative guests as Rush is to his leftist guests"
I have not heard her radio show, but I have seen her tv show and her work as a panelist during the debate and primary season. "Rude" is not a word that comes to mind for me, but perhaps I am missing something. If she was that rude to people who think differently, I wonder why she gets along so well with Buchanan? Still, I have not heard her radio show, so maybe she has a different style there?
22"Rush singing, "Barack the magic n*gro."
I just can't BELIEVE this!
What radio station keeps someone saying something like that on the air?
23Was he high on Oxy when he recorded that?
I have a total girl crush on Rachel Maddow- I think she's awesome and would so love to be her/be her best friend. She's smart and witty and always makes interesting observations that I don't hear from the other pundits. I'm an MSNBC junkie and definitely enjoy learning these little personal tidbits that you don't usually get ("I am a mustard person").
24rachel is awesome. very smart woman as well.
25I'd never heard of her until you guys covered her (and when some of the other posters mentioned her the other day) and I'm very intruiged. I need to find out what time she's on here on the west coast.
26Love her! Her show has a great mix of politics and humor
27Is Rachael Keith's brother or is he her sister? Her show is a mix of politics and humor (she thinks she knows poiltics but she is a big joke. She (he) might want to try speaking out of the left side of her (his) since everything that comes out is leftist.
