If you're staying up to watch John McCain make his grand, and potentially awkward, return to David Letterman tonight, you should expect to hear seven jokes about McCain's party for each joke made about the Democrats.
Get Flash to see this player.
According to the Center For Media and Public Affairs, since McCain tapped Sarah Palin, 286 jokes have been made about the Republicans by late-night comics compared to 42 about the Democrats. Even material-producing Joe Biden, set to appear on Leno tonight, doesn't find himself the butt of many jokes. I guess the availability of a Sarah Palin comedian look-alike got Joe off the hook.
Perhaps Republicans should take it as a compliment — maybe they're just funnier than Democrats! Do you think late-night skewering could help kick politicians out of power?

No, I think it's all in good fun.
1I've got my fingers crossed that it'll help.
2It's better than being on the receiving end of hate.
3Today or yesterday biden said that the biggest job facing the middle class is three letters, jobs. j-o-b-s.
But palin is stupid?
4Yes -- Palin is stupid. I love it when we agree.
5She messes up on a supreme court question, he can't count. But the msm has a field day with her. Blinders on...check.
6She can't name any Supreme Court cases, at least he can name the biggest problem facing the middle class.
7good lord, who say's she can't name any supreme court cases. She was put on the spot about something that no other vp has been asked, or potus candidate either. Whole different branch of government.
8No other candidate has been asked about or discussed Supreme Court cases they disagree with????? Maybe not on Fox - but off the top of my head, I can say for certain that Obama's been asked about gun control rulings.

Even Elizabeth Hesselbeck said she should have had some in her back pocket.
10Letterman is a liberal?! I'm shocked.
11Letterman isn't liberal.
McCain announced his intention to run for President on Letterman, if you'll remember.
12He also said that Iraq might be the source of the Anthrax back in 2001 on Letterman as well. They go way back.
Jill, I don't see how that's proof that Letterman isn't liberal.
13Did anyone just watch the speeches from the Alfred Smith dinner?
Hysterical!
Citizen can you post the link tomorrow??
14Where do you get the idea that he IS liberal?
15From watching the show and listening to the jokes he makes. It's not some big horrible thing, it's just more Hollywood. That's always been my opinion of him.
16I thought you were joking Jill. He is known for attacking conservative people he doesn't agree with.
17The Al Smith dinner speeches were the funniest thing I have seen about the campaign. Both candidates had absolutely hilarious jokes, funnier than any Leno or Letterman jokes by far. I have watched it twice tonight.
18I was just looking around on here for something about the Al Smith dinner speeches. They were very funny! Hillary was laughing so hard...
There sure is enough hate and hostility from ALL sides this election...it was refreshing to see the candidates having a laugh.
19Sometimes Mac can seem stiff, but he was impressive giving that speech. Very funny jokes, and very touching in his little tribute to Obama's historical candidacy.
20I liked the tribute part too; sincere and straightforward.
Obama was really funny also.
"Where are those Greek columns I ordered?...contrary to rumors you've heard, I was not born in a manger...Barack is Swahili for 'that one'"
And from McCain...
"It's going to be a long night at MSNBC if I manage to pull this one off..."
21Yea those speeches were much much more funny than anything SNL or anyone else has done on the campaign.
Those writers should go work for SNL!
22my fav Obama line when talking about where his first name comes from "... and i got my middle name from someone who obviously never thought I'd run for President"
23I cant stand letterman, but I am glad McCain went on there and made up with him.
24I do think that Republicans are the butt of more jokes recently but to be fair back during the Clinton presidency -democrats were constantly getting made fun of so it ebbs and flows. Also during the democratic primaries - they had a field day with Hillary.
25"but to be fair back during the Clinton presidency -democrats were constantly getting made fun of so it ebbs and flows."
Exactly. IMO, the party that is not in power usually has the best opportunity for great joke coverage when they are not in the White House. It is always more funny to make fun of the people in power, vs. the minority. I don't think The Daily Show would have been as successful if Gore had won!
26I can't believe this is really even being discussed. Look, the media is 90% liberal. NINETY PERCENT. That means that television, newspapers, anything that comes out of Hollywood--90% of all of these people that you see in the media are going to take a crack at a Republican when they can. Why discuss it? It exists. It's fact.
