As Hillary Clinton and John McCain taught us in the New Hampshire primaries, regardless of polls, anything can happen on election day. But if John McCain loses, history may paint him as the Republican's sacrificial lamb destined to be defeated by the Democrats.
Spectators figure that a perfect storm of wars, bad economic news, GOP mismanagement in Congress, and a pariah of a President (George W. Bush) make it impossible for McCain to keep the White House under Republican control.
Perhaps debating the merits of McCain's sometimes imprudent campaign is pointless, if the White House was never in McCain's reach.

Please...thats the silliest thing i've ever heard!
Obama would be a much better president then McCain would be. It doesnt matter who's been in the whitehouse for the past 8 years.
1I don't think it was over before it began, but the conservative candidate is a huge underdog, given the last two years.
2Just the last two years Dave?
3Sure he had a lot to explain regarding the last 8 years of a republican in the white house, but he also didn't offer much change and that's what people are needing and wanting.
4McCain is doing well given the circumstances of the Bush presidency. I'm not completely counting him out.
5Well, yes. The housing bubble didn't burst really, until about 2 years ago, and from my view, that was the catalyst for our current ecconomic problems. If that hadn't happened, I'm thinking we are in a very different place as a country, and John McCain has a much better chance to win.
6UnDave, I completely agree. Things didn't truly start to fall completely apart until about 2 years ago.
7have you guys seen McCains brain? they just posted anew vid of the debate yesterday...too funny.

8I don't think it's fair to say that the White House was never within his reach. He just may not end up being the right candidate to keep it for the Republicans.
9McCain is the last person we need in the White House. I hope Obama keep coming out ahead. McCain looks so sad in each debate that they've had.
10I'm still nervous... I'm for Obama but polls don''t mean anything. Until the election is completely over and all the votes counted there's still a chance for McCain.
11I actually think that on balance, a struggling economy should have helped the Republicans. The problem is that McCain personally isn't really strong in this arena. His message has been all over the map, and some of his policy just flies in the face of conservative ideas.
Now, let's just pretend the Republicans had chosen someone who was strong on the economy. I don't know much about Romney but I've heard he would have been a good choice in this respect.
Right now the economy seems to have eclipsed Iraq in terms of focus. I really think that if the Republicans had a strong economic candidate they could be capitalizing on all the independent voters right now and could win.
He still can win though. Polls are misleading.
12I think the current economy, war, etc. is not helping McCain, however there are still many ignorant Americans out there that think Obama is a Muslim terrorist. Unfortunately, I don't think we can count out a McCain win.
13McCain is definitely the underdog, but it wasn't completely due to circumstances. His choices haven't exactly helped him. However, I am surprised that he isn't further behind. The first sentence of this post says it all. Anything can happen!
14I think as evidence has showed us, if McCain wins it will be a conscious choice and not because Obama is black or people are ignorant.
15I think it's sad that people think that McCain is the same as Bush. So totally different in the political spectrum. McCain keeps saying look at the voting records and everyone keeps ignoring them. Poor John.
16Tell all of his supporters this. And depending on the polls you like Obama is only ahead by two to three points.
17We've looked at the records, heck, we've lived their records. Bush and McCain are very very much alike - too much alike for our future.
18Steph that is such a cop out attack. I truly don't see how anyone who understands our consitution or basic money skills can think Obama would be anything but devastating to our country. There is no positive model for this kind government growth.
19pardon my spelling.
20Definitely not an attack and I don't see the cop out. IHeart said we should look at their records and I said we have, and we find them distressing.
21Your evaluation of Obama is simply that, your evaluation.
I think the last eight years have been devastating to the country's standing in the world, our unity, our economy, our education system our health system - and I think Obama's vision for the future is less of a risk than continuing as we have. That's simply my evaluation.
sorry but i cant even stomach to see a picture of rush
22"I think as evidence has showed us, if McCain wins it will be a conscious choice and not because Obama is black or people are ignorant."
What a sad yet laughable statement.
First off, I'd like to see this evidence.
Second of all, if this is true...I'd like YOU to tell ME on which of those two reasons did I make my mind up to support Obama? Since you know, you've pegged all us Obama supporters down so well.
23Ah well, if you READ the post a few days ago that said that only 6% of people wouldn't vote for Obama because he is black vs. the 9% that are voting for him SPECIFICALLY because he IS black... that takes the racism element out completely.
No one wins when someone argues that the other side is ignorant just cuz they are pissed their side didn't win. All that does is divide.
24I'm saying that if McCain wins its not because people are ignorant or racist. Its because more people consciously chose him.
And if Obama wins its not because people are ignorant, its because more people consciously chose him.
25Yeah, voting for McCain is a conscious choice. I'm sure none of his supporters are racist and couldn't possibly vote for a man who roughly has 50% of African ancestry in his genetic makeup. I'm also sure that none of the people who will vote for McCain don't have unnerving allegiances that fall down party lines. Let's not forget that no one will vote for McCain because he has a HOT(*throws up*) hockey mom on his ticket. ALSO, not a singular McCain supporter will vote for him just because he is a 'war hero' therefore automatically making him a TRUE American not like that arugula-eating, elite Arab named Barack Hussein Obama.
Please spare me your attempts to make we Obama supporters into merely blind, kool-aid drinkers. It is as much an insult to your intelligence as it is ours.
26I never said that indie. You are losing it for no reason. Re-read my comments and then post again.
27"Ah well, if you READ the post a few days ago that said that only 6% of people wouldn't vote for Obama because he is black vs. the 9% that are voting for him SPECIFICALLY because he IS black... that takes the racism element out completely."
Oh, I'm sorry if my life doesn't revolve around Sugarland. Not knocking you guys but I don't have all the time in the world to read EVERY.SINGLE.POST.
And did that post say that because Obama is black(and just as much white as he is black, by the way) it is the ONLY reason why these people are voting for him? Unless you provide a source, this is worth a grain of salt with me.
28http://www.citizensugar.com/2336914
theres the link. now you can direct your hate somewhere else. because i said none of the things you are implying.
29i posted the link, it got flagged, it will show up in a bit
30however i will admit that the post said 6% are less likely to vote for him based on race and 9% are more likely to vote for im based on race.
either way, the race factor is a wash, if not more HELPFUL to Obama.
31I have been pretty calm in recent times over the largely false claims and assumptions that I've seen as of late. Couldn't let this one fly, no way...no how.
You made a statement so, don't try to back out now just because liek OGM, I called you on it.
32OMG you are out of your damn mind. You need to re-read my comments because I did not say or imply any of the things you are so pissed off about.
33i'm sorry if its disappinting to you that this country isn't as racist as you want it to be.
but the facts are the facts, the racism claim is a wash and will not hurt Obama. it might even help him.
So if he loses, you'll have to find something else to blame it on.
34"i'm sorry if its disappinting to you that this country isn't as racist as you want it to be."
Yeah, cause that's what my entire post was based on. Race relations. I did not single out that issue. You were the one who talked about voting based on Obama's 'race' or voting out of mere idiocy. It was at least implied and if you misrepresented yourself here, it's because you didn't word your statement as you should have. My need to confront you on this did not come out of thin air. Your assertion prompted this reaction.
35If you read comment 13 that made it sound like a McCain win would happen because people are ignorant. If you read my comment, I said if McCain wins it won't be because people are ignorant.
Now if you're on the defensive because who knows why, that is not my problem. In no way does saying that if McCain wins it won't be because of ignorant people equate to if Obama wins it will BE because of ignorant people.
36A cockamamie excuse at best. I'm going to take your initial statement at face value and I stand by every single word I said here tonight.
37Well if you'd rather be angry just to be angry, thats fine with me.
38I never thought I'd be supporting hausfrau, but indielove I do believe you misinterpreted her comment. She was just saying that people will vote for McCain because they LIKE him. Not because he was the default to a black candidate or because they're ignorant of the issues.
She was backing that information up by saying only 6% of people wouldn't vote for him because he's black, compared to the 9% that will vote because he is. All she was saying was that he was not at an disadvantage. She wasn't implying she supports racism. If she was trust me I would know.
I'm just being fair when I say your being a little, and by a little I mean a lot, aggressive. Find a come calmness in the security of your Democratic belief in the faith of our candidate. Don't assume and jump down other posters throats cause their Republican.
That is all.
39Now unfortunately I believe that the 6% of people who wouldn't for him because he is black probably live in concentrated areas and unfortunately have strength in numbers because of the electoral college. A system designed for America when were separated by communication and smaller populations
But I won't let my anger about our outdated voting system system consume me. Maybe after this country gets out of crisis mode we can discuss that.
!
40In conclusion: 1 person, 1 vote
I think some people will take in consideration the republican administration of the last eight years and the fact that they, like a lot of people, are unhappy with how things are going. but considering how many democrats and republicans liked mccain at the beginning, I don't think it was over before it began. and this election won't be over till every vote is counted and till then, mccain still has a chance, unfortunately
.
41hey thanks jess! i do appreciate that.
