It's scary how many wildfires we seem to have in California these days. The tragedies always make me think about how awful it would be to go through a fire, and I start to ponder the hypothetical question of what I would save if my house were burning.
My mom often said that if she could only save one thing, it would be our family photos — though that's not as relevant today in the age of digital photography. Has your home ever caught fire? If so, you probably went the safe route and saved yourself before your stuff. But if your house were burning and you could only save one thing, what would it be?

Lap top. It has all my personal photos and etc on it.
1A necklace that is made out of my birthstone and one of my grandmother's diamonds from her wedding ring. That is irreplaceable.
2my babies - Rosie (pitti) and Kitten (cat) and our foster puppy (Beee!).
3And my pics and laptop
I have an antique steamer trunk used by Barnum and Bailey Circus, In it are all my irreplacable items (photos, knick knacks, important paperwork etc). Its close to the door. It has a handle for easy pickup.
4My husband, family photos, my jewelry, and the navajo rug my father gave me.
5I would save my mom, dad, laptop, and our dogs.
6My Noodle Love Cuba. My dad and my step mom had a house fire a few years ago when they were on vacation after going through that process it was interesting to see what actually survived the fire even though the 3rd story was distroyed.
7my laptop
8My family is of course my number one priority. Everything else is irrelevant.
If I can, I would save my laptop, my box of sentimental items, and my stuffed elephant Katie.
9my animals... everything else can be replaced... I would try and get photos though. Since they aren't all on a computer. besides my computer would be burned too.
10My dog, Eegor! And if I had the time, pertinent documents (birth certificate etc.)
11I would only be thinking about my animals. That's my worst fear in fact. I might also grab my purse and/or car keys after I knew the animals were safe and get my car away from the house.
12If everyone was out of the house I'd save a few things. Pack my biggest handbag with my usb stick, wallet, jewelry box and most definitely my parents photo albums of the whole family. My rents were never able to see their wedding pictures because the shop caught on fire. Till this day I still ask my mom to really pick her brain and try to remember if there was anyone else who took pictures. But shes says nope, everyone would hire professionals since it was pricey to get back in '71. My dad felt it, so the following year he purchased a Canon, which I now use from time to time to take pics of my architectural scale models. Still works that great!
13My cat and laptop.
14my cat, my man and my purse.
15my family first ... and animals (if I had any at the time - I don't now, except for fish)
and this stuff:
-my laptop or external hard drive (the laptop's backup) & my purse
16-my fireproof box with all the important papers in it (although I guess it could survive right?)
-my favorite stuffed animal as a child
-a few select photos that aren't on my computer... hmm I guess I should at least scan those in ... although the originals are very very important
-possibly a few souvenirs/gifts that I've had given to me if I could still get out in time
Other than my children right... one of our building just burnt down a few months ago so it's fresh on my mind...
my purse with zip drive in it, one suitcase of pants for each of (as tshirts are cheaper to buy), my folder with important papers.
17That's it.
*sorry for typos...typing on the fly.
18My grandmother's antique jewelry and my family photos...everything else can be replaced.
19Hubbie and the fine jewelry he given me. The rest is replaceable.
20My MacBook Pro.
21My cat, Shakira...
22Mon chien
23I got to test this out last year, when lightning struck the old dry palm tree 20 feet away from my bedroom window. Hubby grabbed the file boxes w/ our SS cards and passports, i grabbed my expensive school books, our laptops, and lol, my birth control pills. Thankfully, we were able to go back home in an hour or so.
24We bought a fire safe box with our passports and BCs in them and some cash so I could leave that. I would grab some old photographs and my mom's journals. Screw the laptop and dig pics. thats what Facebook is for.
25This is tough.. since I live alone I'd try to save as many things as possible and get myself out. I'd grab my laptop, my purse which has my wallet, keys, and glasses, a picture of my family and maybe if I could grab some clothes on the way out since my closet is right by the door. Everything else is pretty replaceable.
26Family, 5 cats, 2 snakes, 2 lizards, and my sons baby pics.
27people in the house of course! but material things: every photo album b/c we haven't backed all of them up. My laptop and my marc jacobs shoes!
28my sheltie, Rozy, and a white gold locket that I have with some of my dad's cremated ashes sealed inside (they are bagged and the locket is sawdered shut all around). if I ever lost that, consider me done for
29My animals....and my purse.
30I lost my apartment to a fire three years ago. Unfortunately, I lost my partner of eight years and father of my son. When you lose a loved one under this circumstance nothing else in the apartment is worth saving because you lost the most important one of all. Three months after the fire I finally went in to the apartment to retrieve my items but the fire and water damage was so intense that I could barely look through the items to see what I could salvage.
Anyway, good thing that the SS cards, BCs, passports and other important documents were always stored in a fire box and was not damaged. After a while I slowly cleaned out the apt and removed whatever I could salvage.
31Rosa, I am so sorry to hear that. It really does put things into perspective.
I would save my daughter, my kitties, and my computer, where all the photos of my son, who passed away, are stored. Everything else is replaceable.
32Laptop and any important documents I may have.
33My dog and my laptop with all my pictures on it. Maybe would grab some framed old photos if I could...
34My back up drive with all of my family's pics on it (including my dad's =(...) and of course all of my loved ones (pets included). Oh, and my vintage louie!
35my aminals, my photo albums and laptop for all the pictures. it would be a shame if my 100 yr old library burnt down. some of these books have gone through 2 world wars, one war of independence and it would be a shame to lose that history.
36Lap top and kitty.. Kitty obviously comes first though haha.. oh and I'd grab my stash of money that I have for rainy days!
37nothing. i'd just get the out with my kids. copies of pix are on a disk in a safe deposit box, everything else is just stuff.
38our two external hard disks (backups), lock the fireproof safe, grab my handbag and leave.
Everything can be replaced relatively easily except my passports (dual nationality, birth certificates, parents marriage certificates etc.. they all involve a £2000 trip home to replace), and car warrantys and log books etc which are kept in the safe anyway. Everything else is what insurance is for.
39My two little boy cats would be my number one priority...
I'd try to grab my old laptop, as I haven't moved pictures over to the new one yet - I'd get both if I could, but the old one is more important to me. Oh, and my digital camera, because I have a lot of pictures I haven't transferred yet. I could probably lose everything but my two cats, though, and I'd be devastated, but OK.
40Rosa, I am so sorry for your loss.
I wouldn't try to save any material things - it's not worth the risk. I would feel so fortunate for my husband and pets to get out safely.
41My cat Grizzie and my computer which basically contains my life.
42Wow this is a tough question. The first thing I thought of was my laptop, which has all my personal photos on it, but not any of my old family photos. Those are packed away in two big heavy boxes with some other old ancient albums (some belonging to my grandmother when she was a teen) scattered around the house. I should probably put them in fireproof boxes or something because I doubt I'd be able to haul them out if a fire was blazing.
So yeah, definitely my laptop.
43My dogs and my Pearl Jam crap. Seriously. Everything else is replaceable.
44My family,if my house was on fire I don't know if I would be able to get anything out without panicking.Sorry Rosa
45My cats, first and foremost. My laptop, secret money stash and in a large trash bag, if I had any time left, my makeup and clothes and baby blanket.
46Myself, and my disabled brother if he is home. My mom and step dads room is downstairs and even though the fire department told me that if there is a fire I should just leave him in his room, its not like I could ever ever ever do that. I mean really. Hes older than me but he has severe autism and some mental retardation- I doubt he would understand that I a fire is dangerous......And I know that there is NO way I could leave him. NO WAY.
Other than that, Im just throwing on some pants and getting myself the eff out.
I have all my pics on photobucket, even old ones, and all my important docs are in a fire proof safe etc
I send myself all my drafts to my email.
So if there is a fire , Im getting people out and thats it
Rosa- I am so so sorry for your loss. My condolences.
Ive always been really worried about this, one of my moms best friends lost her first born son in a house fire and it scared me half to death, I have always been hyper vigallent about planning escape routes etc
47My laptop--it has everything on it.
48My kitty and my "run out of a burning house" bag.
49My husband had taught me to prepare a bag with all our important docs and info. like passports, social security cards, some money, birth certificates and other important things like those. (this is more for people who don't have a safe deposit box)
my laptop, purse, phone, and blanket
