If you're dying to get out of Dodge, you're in luck. The Lonely Planet series of travel guides has just released its list of Top 10 World Cities. One entry is causing a few raised eyebrows — including mine. Glasgow, Scotland has made its way onto the list despite its not-too-distant reputation for rough neighborhoods, gangs, and general dereliction. When I went looking for photos, indeed most of them told that story.
The guide paints a rosier picture of a city resurrected. It says: "Forget castles, kilts, bagpipes and tartan. You come for the cocktails, cuisine and designer chic (plus the legendary native wit). Glasgow has shaken off its shroud of industrial soot and shimmied into a sparkling new designer gown."
The Lonely Planet travel editor seconds that notion saying, "The time has come for Lonely Planet to let one of its worst-kept secrets out: Glasgow's got everything. We're delighted to highlight such a fun, stylish city." While some say celebration is too soon in a city "more violent than New York and sicker than parts of Iraq," we can hope that the Planet folks have their finger on the pulse of a trend of improvement.

1YES CHICAGO
2Hello, stereotypes.
Glasgow is pretty rough imo, but just like anywhere else you have ok areas and rougher areas. But it also has excellent art galleries, fantastic music venues, and is the place to be in Scotland/North of England if you're into fashion. Restaurants, bars/pubs and shops are brilliant. A lot of new bands, writers come from there, and it's very often considered as the place to be and the place where things happen (way more than Edinburgh, that's for sure-ugh.)
I've heard seriously worse things about Sao Paulo, Mexico City and Chicago than Glasgow! Things have changed since the 80s, glad the Lonely Planet is showing that.
3Go Chi-Town!
4You could say the same for a lot of the cities listed on here, Citizen, not just Glasgow - which I happen to think is a lovely place.
5Having said that, I'd love to go to Warsaw and Beirut.
6Of course I love my city (go Chicago!), but I love Glasgow too. And hey, I love me some kilts and castles, too...nothin' wrong with that...
Dying to go to Lisbon, too!
7I go to Chicago a lot (currently dating a boy there) and love it. Also loved Zurich. Have been trying to get to Brazil for a while as well as Lisbon! Looks like a fun list!
8Ooh, exciting, mydiadem.
Yes, Chicago rocks, and I hope you've gotten the chance to
check out all of the fun neighborhoods we have too...
9I had a fun time when I visited Chicago. Boystown is cool!
10i've always wanted to go to shanghai so that would def be on my list as well as going to brazil. as far as others, well i'd be more than happy to go to just about any of those.
11Wow, mydiadem..
12I completely agree..
Used to live in Chicago and
spent alot of time in Zurich, love both cities.
Sao Paulo and Lisbon most appealing on the list.
I would also add Capetown or Jo'burg..
At this point ,though, when i travel(not for work)
the last thing i want is to go to another city....
I would like to see top 10 Islands..
I am suprised to see Mexico City on this list.
13Hmm I'd check out Beirut, Zurich and Mexico City!
14Yay Chicago!!!!
15Lists like this are so silly to me because it's so much a matter of opinion. Big cities aren't really for me, so this list probably doesn't apply to me.
16Two of my favorite cities--Chicago and Glasgow. Yay! Glasgow has really changed over the years for the better. It's become a mecca for fashion, art and music. And forget the notion of haggis being a mainstay of the food offerings; the restaurants are quite good. And, best of all, the people are wonderful, sincere, and friendly. And the kilts aren't bad either!
17Glasgow!!
18Why are people complaining about Scotland when you have Beirut on this list and some of the world's worst skinheads and football hooligans in Poland ? But yay Antwerp I'm going to Belgium for schoold next year, so this makes me smile.
19Venice, Florence, Barcelona, Stockholm.
20oooh I'm dying to go back to chicago to go to chen's of chicago for some delicious sushi!!
21Yeay Chicago ... I love it!
22Wow. These cities are all so different. And Mexico city isn't dangerous? Hmmm...I wonder what the criteria was for coming up with this list? If I had to choose from these ten only, it would, without a doubt, be Lisbon. I've heard nothing but wonderful things about Lisbon and Portugal. It's already been sitting on my top 10 list!
23Replace Warsaw with Krakow and I'll be OK with the list. The people in Krakow are incredibly nice and the city (especially Rynek) is so gorgeous.
And hooray for Chicago! I'm so proud.
24Totally agree with Advah's comment (3). Glasgow seems to have a completely unfounded reputation as being one of the most dangerous cities in Europe; many people I have met have said statements about Glasgow that are just ridiculous.
Glasgow is an amazing city, and is known throughout the world to those that have visited as being one of the most friendly cities in the world. Outside of London, it is the most visited city in the UK, due to it's fantastic nightlife, amazing shopping, booming fashion industry, brilliant restaurants, and the simple fact that the city itself is really beautiful, has more than 1000 years of history and has great art galleries, museums and much more. This also makes it a wonderful place to live, and after seeing many other cities the world has to offer, I'd take Glasgow any day! Come and visit. You'll like it...
25nyaradzom2001 i most say you are not very smart to talk about beirut a city you have never traveled to the way you did. Beirut is actually one of the most beautiful cities in the world(top 5)and the most liveliest city. It was rated no.9(in front of san fransicsco)in travel and leisure top 10 cities. So dont make comments you dont know are true. I hve visited beirut before so i would love to travel to portugal.
