Looks like the Obama-Biden ticket is starting to close in on the coveted fashionista vote. Vogue took a chance in its November issue, which will hit newsstands over the next week, by titling a feature story "All the Vice President's Women." Cute! Let's hope it's not wildly prophetic, because the profile is really about one woman — Jill Biden, the would-be vice president's wife. Second Lady?

A representative for Vogue spoke to the Huffington Post and said of the cover line, "Win or lose, we thought it was a clever cover line that would serve to get people's attention." I've written entire posts to fit headlines I've come up with, so I understand the urge, but putting it in print and on the cover seems a lot like buying a dress one size too small.
Is it just me, or is there a lot of Obama-presumptiveness around lately? To see what I mean, read more.
On last week's Political Gabfest, Slate's David Plotz went on a whole riff about when the Obama administration is sworn in, before he caught his slip. Are people going to have a lot of knocking on wood to do not to jinx their hopes (maybe Vogue has a big wood pile . . . ?) or are the numbers pointing in a way that makes printing an early result like this prudent?
Did I hear anyone say "Dewey Defeats Truman"?

Marc Jacobs
Oliver Bonas
N゚mph
Eeeek! Don't touch the money before you win the bet!!!
1Um, who just posted Palin's virtual oval office?
2Everyone needs to stop jinxing it!! I'm so nervous for this election...I'm afraid I'll get my hopes up just to have them trampled and stomped and beat into the ground.
3We all know the election isn't really over until November 5th ( or after.....???) stop prematurely announcing people victors ugggh!
4This is absolutely disgusting. Another magazine I will NEVER read again.
5I agree! Its such a jinx to make such a declaration like this!
I also agree with Steph..the Palin Oval office post was not looked upon as presumptiveness..but the tone of this post sounded like it was..(which I agree that it is) but yea..when u compare the two posts they are basically looking at a same situation differently
6The Palin Oval office was a mechanism to ridicule her, as usual.
This article exalts "a close-knit family of strong, independent women—led by his remarkable wife, Jill."
I think it's pretty obvious those are not the same thing.
7Well, Anna Wintour is used to getting what she wants. She probably figures an Obama presidency is no different from her usual demands.
8Yeah...I've been doing a lot of knocking on wood lately
9They may just be practicing the power of positive thought.
10It's just in poor taste and not good journalism to "pick a side" unless it's and OpEd piece. Hell even Marie Claire knows better the November Issue has an interview with both Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain when 20/20 did their overview of the candidates they gave them equal time.
11Here's to hoping!
12ok i'll give u that organic, I actually made the statement before I read and saw the whole Palin post and realized that it was making fun of her..
13btw..kinda strange that ur being direct and not sarcastic with ur statements, as u usually operate
Oh man. I seriously think that Obama is going to win, but this is still in poor taste.
14No wonder Joe has always been a champion to women's issues..he has a lot of women in his life.
But yeah..cringe worthy title to the article.. too soon.. is it so hard to add "possible" in there?
15Stop jinxing it damm it!!!! Just get out there and vote.
16OK.. if you click on the link the byline is:
"If Senator Biden is elected, he'll bring along a close-knit family of strong, independent women—led by his remarkable wife, Jill. Jonathan Van Meter reports."
Then the article begins.. that makes me feel MUCH better. That is different then what just the title makes it out to be.
17Biden always makes me cry when he talks about the women in his life.. esp his first wife and his wife now Jill or his mom (MomMom).. And when his boys talk about Jill. This quote always gets me.
"I asked her once not long before our wedding how she could marry me knowing how much -- knowing how much I adored Neilia, and she didn't hesitate. She said, and quote, "that's the reason I can marry you." She told me. Anybody can love that deeply once can do it again. That's when I realized exactly what Jill's love had done for me. And had given me permission to be me again. (hesitate with emotion)God, I'm sorry. She did. I mean, she restored my life. I know that sounds corny but she really did. I mean, she gave me permission to -- that one statement, sort of gave me permission to -- anyway, it's accurate.(and then laughs)"
18Vogue did an article on Cindy McCain last summer. That's where I learned that she is a size 0. Actually, it was a pretty good article. I don't think Vogue is picking sides--it's a fashion magazine. They care what the candidates (and their wives) are wearing and will say nice things about both sides.
19One, it's Vogue, not the Economist.
Two, well, doesn't the newest poll put Obama fourteen points up, three weeks out? And 538 has him ahead on the electoral college by like 160. I don't think it's that presumptuous.
20well the first thing that bugs me is that not only are celebs really endorsing Obama way too openly but now a fashion magazine is doing it too? gosh - now i have to wonder why Warner Brothers doesn't want to release the Mcain movie until after the election. it doesn't matter if someone seems to be on one side or another anymore
as for jinxing it - i am a FIRM believe that this is what they are doing. it's like tattooing someone's name on your body - you know that you're going to break up with them if you do that right?
21Yep, ilanac, WHEN obama loses all of his supporters will be able to blame Vogue. LOL But what you're saying is absolutely right on about the celebrities.
22Sigh. This whole election is just ridiculous. It is doing way more harm than good for America.
23Title: All the Vice President's Women
Byline: "If Senator Biden is elected, he'll bring along a close-knit family of strong, independent women—led by his remarkable wife, Jill. Jonathan Van Meter reports."
THEN the article begins
the title is more tongue in cheek when you see the byline.
24Interesting quote in the article from Jill about Michelle seeming cold..
So I was getting my impression of her from the media. And Barack just seemed more friendly to me, more gregarious. And I certainly saw much more of him."
When they became part of the ticket and started traveling together, she says, "we began to like each other, and it became a truly warm relationship. We just clicked on so many levels. And our families, I mean, heck! Her mother is so wonderful, and she and her brother get along. It was just this mesh of families. My granddaughters went to a sleepover with Sasha and Malia and had a great time. Toward the end of that week, we were about to say goodbye, and Michelle and I put our arms around each other and she said, 'I love you,' and I said, 'I love you, too.' I mean, in a week it got to that point—and it wasn't phony! I think that's very unusual—maybe for two men to sort of hit it off it's not—but I think it's more unusual for two women to click so quickly."
25Ima now I want to read the article. I can't remember the last time I bought Vogue.
26Presumptuous, yes. Disgusting? I guess that seems strong.
I don't think Vogue is doing anyone favors by doing this. It makes Obama look bad.
27Though the numbers point to the inevitable (yay!), I would not recommend putting anything like this on print. I'm not superstitious (so I don't think it's going to "jinx" anything) but would be more concerned for the reputation of the magazine. It would be horribly embarrassing for them if McCain/Palin are sworn in... oh hell, just in case, knock on wood they aren't!!!
28"It's just in poor taste and not good journalism to "pick a side"."
Considering the fact that Vogue is a fashion magazine I think that any political piece can be considered op-ed. Vogue is not a "news" entity and is not under any obligation to report without bias. I think they have a right as an entity to express their political choice. And yes I would say the same thing if they did a piece on McCain or Palin. The fact that media exposure is imbalanced and there are more people in fashion and entertainment that are liberal or express liberal views is a construct of our society. I wouldn't rag on churches if larger percentage of them were McCain supporters and I consider churches to have a huge influence. Not liking something or agreeing is not a justification to shut it up.
29[Sigh. This whole election is just ridiculous. It is doing way more harm than good for America.]
I think that's because Americans need to calm down. Obama's not going to pimp out AirForce One. Obama's not the Anti-Christ. He's not BFF's with Terriorist? Everyone just needs to chill.
In fact it would be just another election for me except for the fact that (1) I truly believe in Obama -- not just the message of hope but I believe that he will be the one to get our country on track and (2) I REALLY don't like Palin.
30There was also a story about Bush women (at least Laura and the twin that got married)...last year maybe? I love vogue. I get it when I fly and I read it with cheap red wine during my 2 hour flight to Chicago. Anyway, I've never read an article on a politician or a politician's wife that was not positive. Of course, they could have & I didn't see it, but they're just fluff pieces. The whole magazine is fluff.
I agree that we shouldn't say Obama has this won (it's not over til it's over), but I don't think the headline is that big of a deal. A story on the men in Palin's family wouldn't have been as interesting as Jill Biden's story. Although, I wish they did a story on Gov Palin. She has a nice wardrobe--especially shoes.
31I think Obama's smiley-faced fascism is the only way to get this country back on track.
32Dream, is it do as I say, not as I do?
33I've been completely indifferent to anything Vogue says ever since they stopped putting models on their covers and started being a high-end celebrity magazine.
34SUCH a jinx...Deomcrats go out and vote..don't get a false sense of security and think its a sure deal.
35I am very paranoid about this election. I hope the trend of racism playing a role in the difference of self reported polls and actual voting is over. It would be really sad if his lead didn't actually exist. I can't wait to vote, in Oregon all the voting is done by mail. So we should be getting our ballots soon.
36The article is a crack up actually..
"It wasn't all that long ago that Jill Biden was forbidding her husband to run for president. She tells a funny story about a day when a bunch of Democratic Party bigwigs had planted themselves in her living room to try to convince Joe Biden that 2004 was his year to unseat George Bush. Jill was sitting out by the pool in a bikini—fuming. Unable to stand it any longer, she got up, found a Magic Marker, and wrote the word no across her stomach and then paraded through the meeting. "They got the message," she says with a laugh."
Thats like a Laugh In moment? LOL! I can't imagine the look on the democratic bigwigs faces.
37I'm sure many of you saw this piece but thought I would post it here.
huffingtonpost.com/steven-petrow/joe-bidens-tears-remember_b_133902.html
It says a lot about Joe Biden but also about the guy that wrote the article, brought tears to my eyes.
38Beautiful.
everyone who is saying "chill" needs to take that advice themselves!
I dont give a rip about how these magazines are jumping the gun, to me its just thinking of the future and not the present and we all need to have our minds in the here and now, including the candidates.
