On Oct. 29, six days before the election, Barack Obama will appear on at least CBS and NBC to make a final 30-minute case for his candidacy. Obama purchased the large block of national airtime for what is essentially a more personalized, and lengthy, campaign commercial.
Thanks to cheap TV time and lack of campaign finance laws, direct appeals were commonplace during the 1960s and '70s. As the 1952 Republican VP nominee, Richard Nixon, one of the first to appeal to voters directly via TV, gave the infamous "Checkers Speech" denying that he accepted illegal donations. His effort to reach out to voters was essentially successful, as the Eisenhower/Nixon ticket went on to victory. Ross Perot was the last to air low-rated campaign infomercials in 1992.
Networks will offer McCain a similar time at a similar price, but Obama's fund-raising advantage may mean only he has the resources. Obama often makes his message demographic specific, for example buying ads on MTV. By appealing to the entire nation, Obama can convey a unified message. I'm still left wondering what details he has up his sleeves for the mega-ad. An economy-heavy speech would have an historical hook, considering Oct. 29 marks the anniversary of Black Tuesday, the start of the Great Depression.

The man has run the smartest campaign I've ever witnessed, from a technological level to the grassroots ground efforts. He obviously had a great September in fundraising, which gives him the capital to buy such a large chunk of space on the major networks during this heavily watched time period. I look forward to listening to his message before Election Day. And I didn't even realize the significance of the day.
1I've seen one of his ads that was like maybe 5 minutes and I thought that it was way to long. I'm already voting for him so I don't need to see a billion commercials. I can't imagine that a lot of people haven't made up their minds by Oct. 29.
But if he has all that money he might as well spend it.
2Will this have ratings like a TV show or will it not be tracked because its technically a commercial?
3Kinda late in the game. I don't know how many people are actually swayable at this point. I feel the same way about the debates. The debates should be done in like August or July so that people who are truly noncommitted can compare the two candidates side by side. By now, most people watch just to root for their own team like a baseball game or something.
4I don't know how you can be undecided now, much less undecided 6 days before the election.
5Right. Maybe the objective isn't so much to convert but to cement. And to encourage people to feel passionately enough to make the effort to go to the polls.
6I suppose if Obama's got the money, he ought to do what he can to get his platform out there--uninterrupted and with no time limits. If McCain is smart, he'll do one too, but I imagine he'd want to wait to see Obama's before airing his. If McCain can't afford it, he's probably not too happy about it.
7He responded to one woman who said she couldn't trust Obama cause she read that he was an Arab. McCain said, No mam, thats not true. He is a citizen. A good family man. And that statement is not true.
Then a man said that he and his wife were about to have their first child and they were afraid of the prospect of having a child with Obama as President. McCain responded that obviously he wanted to be president and he didn't want Obama to be president BUT he is a good man. And no one has anything to fear about Obama being President. The crowd boo'd and gasped.
Thank you McCain.. you just redeemed yourself in my eyes.
8McCain had no choice. His crowds were getting worse by the day. He McCain had said this when the 1st person shouted terrorist, it wouldn't have been a story.
9The sad thing is the crowd booed McCain.
10AND report showed Sarah Palin abused her power as governor and violated the public trust. Will this have any effect on her running for VP?
11Ima I was just about to mention that.
12They boo'd him because they completely believe that Obama is a terrorist. Did you see them interviewing those people walking in? They showed so many of them doing Obama is a terrorist shout outs to the camera. WTF?
It is so sad. He is trying to explain this too them and calm them down from their mob mentality and they were turning on him!! Ridiculous!!!
13I'm not sure what to think about that Ima. Sure it is really good of McCain to say that to his supporters but I thought going negative and making people believe that Obama was risky was the campaign strategy for the run to the finish.
I am, however, very happy and pleasantly surprised to see McCain take this stand against his own supporters. I am only a little suspicious that these questioners were plants to give McCain a chance to negate some of the negative press he's been getting lately for how negative these meetings have been.
14"AND report showed Sarah Palin abused her power as governor and violated the public trust. Will this have any effect on her running for VP?"
Is it official? Is the ethics probe over?
15It is official!

16It's crazy. I like to stream Ed Schultz at work. I went to his page today and watched a you tube video of people leaving a McCain rally in Ohio. It was ... I have no words.
17http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjxzmaXAg9E
Ima is that the same video you saw?
18omg he was booed that is sad
not he got a taste of his own medicine, talking down to obama like he
was worthless or less than him
19Yeah.. they are talking about the bipartisan investigation findings released just now. They claim that she and her husband used undue influence and was a factor in firing of Monehan. So she has been found guilty of abusing her power and engaged in "violation of public trust". But they are saying he was fired legally even though she lied about the reason since he was a hire/fire at will employee.
20I wonder what effect this will have if any...
21lil that video is gross...GROSS! The interviewer obviously had a slant and was trying to get sound bites to use against them, but boy did they deliver!
"Do you think he is a terrorist?"
-"It is in his bloodlines. Look at his name!"
Gross.
22It will have a negative effect. Just another nail in the coffin...
But, I do have to say, even if she abused her power, a guy who uses a police taser and tasers his own stepson has no place carrying a badge and a gun.
And the report states that the personal reasons weren't the sole reasons for firing the commissioner.
23"Lawmakers indicated they planned to release the report even though there was disagreement about its findings."
doesn't sound like this is cut and dry and most likely the people who like her will continue to like her and those who don't still won't.
24No.. that isn't the video that I saw on TV.. that is fn scary too.
But the clip they had on tv was supporters going into the town hall meeting and no one stopped they were filing past the camera and just kept calling out to the video Obama is a terrorist..he is terrorist don't you know..
the woman who called him an arab.. I don't think she was a plant.. she was kinda authentic..
and stumbled trying to find the word she wanted.. I think she was looking for Islamic or Muslim but all she could get out was Arab. And the same with the guy and his pregnant
wife.
But you never know.. but you could tell that McCain was mortified to have to correct these people and actually stick up for Obama..but the point is he did it. I am proud of the guy. THAT took moxie.
25Here is another one of those gross mob videos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJghQMq49dw&feature=related
The interviewer is a moron but these people aren't exactly doing themselves any favors. They just look like ignorant fools. "He's a terrorist!" "She's a woman! Woo Hoo!" Wow. I'm sure if the other side interviewed BO supporters coming out of a rally, they would look just as stupid but I don't know if they would look as hateful.
26i dunno Kas, i'm sure if you asked them about Bush you'd get a whole lotta hate!
27And yet Wooten is still a state trooper on active duty.. isn't he? And the stepson taser situation according to Wooten was him and the stepson fooling around on a dare and he had removed the barbs.. that was in his deposition.. all else was unsubstantiated rumor. And that is why he was never let go.
28Ima I just saw the video from today. The guy said he was afraid to raise a child with Barack as president. Or something similar.
29haus i will be the first one
30thats the one liliblu
What McCain said was magnanimous and the jerks boo'd him.
31[BUT he is a good man. And no one has anything to fear about Obama being President.]
I don't think McCain had a choice -- but it has certainly calmed me down. Thank you, McCain. Now if Palin could do the same.....
And if I'm reading this right -- it also sounds like a concession speech (??)
32Oh and I found this video on some of the ppl that go to the McCain rallies:
http://teamsugar.com/user/dreamsugar/blog/2335930
33Oh and about the topic:
I think it's a smart move on Obama's part.
34"And if I'm reading this right -- it also sounds like a concession speech (??)"
I wouldn't go that far Dream! It isn't over until it is over.
35It's frightening to think that there are hoards of people who believe Obama is a terrorist and that if Obama wins, he is going to be a target for assassinations throughout his presidency. Just being black would have made him a target, now this...
36One can dream
37no..McCain will actually gain some votes back from republicans that he was alienating with the hate campaign. And he claims he will stay on the Ayers and Rezco questioning to Obama's face at the next debate.
So now it just depends on Palin.. if they can use the troopergate findings to ditch her and replace her with Lieberman you might see his numbers go through the roof.
If he keeps Palin it depends on how they answer the troopergate findings and how they handle the next few weeks.. a lot could happen.
Has any of these so called journalists actually approached Ayers and asked him what his relationship with Obama was or is?
And did you see that Keating recently promised his loyalty to McCain "till death do them part"? WTF?
38"And he claims he will stay on the Ayers and Rezco questioning to Obama's face at the next debate."
That's not wise. Glass houses stones and what not.
39If they get rid of Palin -- it goes towards his judgement. I hope they keep her honestly.
40I think we have to keep in mind the political reasons behind this Palin report. If there were none, it would NOT have come out before Nov 4th. I mean you have a Democrat who is overseeing this investigation and who said before it was even over that it would be an October surprise.
This Wooten guy is not a good guy, he had disciplinary actions taken against him for some serious reasons including making death threats, drinking on the job, and the taser incident (which, I don't care if an 11 year old ASKS me tase him, I'm not doing it and no responsible adult would). All of that happened before Palin became govenor.
Yet the guy was allowed to still carry a badge and a gun? Thats insanity.
41ima - Has any of these so called journalists actually approached Ayers and asked him what his relationship with Obama was or is?
I always wondered that too! Where the heck is Ayers? Why doesn't he just come out and say they weren't friends?
42Yeah and now McCain is trying to tie Michelle Obama to Ayers. I'm thinking this is backlash for Cindy still maintaining a relationship to Keating MANY years later (ended in 1999)
43Wasn't it a board of mostly Republicans that brought the issue up????
44Troopergate was investigated by a bipartisan panel.
45Are there police reports from Palin regarding the trooper? She claims he threatened her family. Where are the reports?
46And that panel had more Republicans than Dems.
47I thought it was a probe of mostly republicans, too Dream. and the fact of the matter is that this was an investigation that was in effect before Palin ever accepted the VP slot. It would have looked shady if the findings were held until after the election. Like what are they trying to hide, you know?
48they didn't bring it up, but the council is made up of 4 dems and 8 pubs. they voted to have an independent person investigate the charges (independent like not one of them, not party affiliation)
49Ok -- soooooo how are you blaming the dems?
