Three years after Hurricane Katrina, the first homes built in by Brad Pitt's Make It Right rebuilding project are complete. Touring the building site in the Lower 9th Ward with Angelina and kids in tow this week, one ecstatic grandmother gave Brad a huge hug. She said of her new electric yellow house, "Honey, this is like heaven on earth." She'll be moving into the house with five of her 22 grandkids later this month.

In all, 150 homes will be built on the site destroyed by the broken levees. Six of the homes are near completed and the happy grandma says, "I thank God for Brad Pitt. I gave him a big hug, and I told him how much I appreciate all that he's done for me and my family." The houses cost about $150,000, are built on property still owned by residents, and their monthly payments are based on income and subsidized by Make It Right.

Brad's Make It Right project was sparked by his dismay that there was no clear plan to address the situation in the Katrina devastated Lower 9th Ward. Consumed by doubt that the area would ever be rebuilt, the residents of the Lower 9th met with Brad and discussed while the terrible crisis had exposed their vulnerability, it created an opportunity: to build something better than what had existed before. The Make It Right Project seeks to do just that.

I really liked this concept.. green homes specifically designed to weather storms and rising water..
Payments made affordable no matter your income to help residents get back to the neighborhood they were born and raised in..
Solar panels and energy efficient appliances and tankless water heaters so that utility bills are next to nothing.
It will interesting to see how it all turns out.
1And.. I would like to give Brad and hug..
a little jealous.
2a rare celebrity whos actions match his words.
3Good for him.
Great career, cute kids, hot partner, generous personality...not too
shabby.
4I bought a couple of hats from the Make It Right website. I am so happy to see so mch progress.
5What a great thing to do!
6I understand the city is still under water level...
7sorry, sea level.
8I have a tote bag made out of the pink tart fabric. I wear it proud. Thanks, Brad, for getting off your behind and making a difference and also living in the city and putting money in the economy!
9When I read that the houses cost about abut 150,000, I thought that was expensive. But now I see how it works. Good for him, he get's a fist bump.
10that is very awesome. he has a great heart.
11Yeah..wadewifey.. they are more expensive due to the Architechs they brought in to design the storm safe homes and then the cradle to cradle materials and all of the solar panels and energy efficient appliances and the tankless water heaters.. OH how I would love a tankless water heater.. next house I am soooo getting one!
12I saw those tankless water heaters on HGTV or one of those channels. They're pretty cool!
13Maybe he should run for office or be appointed the head of FEMA because he's done more they have for Katrina victims!
14Yes the city is still below sea level it always has been, the only way for it not to be is to move the city
15In the meantime, Lutheran Disaster Relief has built over 4,000 homes. Let's try to keep this real.
16doesn't matter if its Lutheran Disaster Relief or Brad's organziation...helping each other is a good thing@
17brad looks so damn hot, he is my weakness
18Yes "lets keep it real" helping, no matter who is doing it is very important and very appreciated. I'm sure a family that lives in one of the Lutheran Disaster Relief houses is just as appreciative as a family living in one of Brad's houses. Charity is charity.
19i agree kast, as much as i could careless about angie i could never knock her for her humanitarian work and adopting, no matter if its sincere or not as long as someone that famous is doing something to help and make a difference is a true gift
20Believe it or not I used to be a (Brad who?) kind of person, but now every time I see him my mind goes straight to that one moment in time when he finally made me swoon, lol. The scene in Meet Joe Black where he's sitting there licking peanut butter off the spoon, that was it for me it was all over.
UnDave you are right to recognize other organizations who have done the same to help disaster victims. However, Lutheran charities does not have scepticism and questions of motive following their every good deed.
If Brad and Angelina keep this up and with the other work they do around the world minus any major scandals I can see them evolving into America's unofficial royal family.
21Good points, Hypno. Plus Brad's gonna get attention no matter what he does, and I like the fact that other charities who do similar work don't get as much attention--IMO, if it's a church doing the charity, then it shouldn't get much publicity, because, well, isn't that the message behind religion? I know it is in Catholicism--the whole "don't do charity and make a big show of it". Just sayin
...and hypno you crack me up. Peanut butter
22My point is, LDR and it's partners in other denominations have been working here and in Mississippi since a few weeks after the the hurricane. Brad had two years to start, why is this just happening now? What about the Manning family, or John Bon Jovi. I like Brad Pitt, but building 4 or 5 houses two years after the hurricane doesn't merit a whole lot of praise in my book, especially since he could have afforded to do more, and should've done it sooner.
23But the fact is he did it and a lot of celebrities and people with money or the resources to help did not. He deserves some credit.
24i agree kast
