  • Sunscreen has a shelf life so make sure to check the expiration date
  • Apply your sunscreen at least 30 minutes before being exposed to the sun
  • Avoid direct sun exposure between the hours of 10am-2pm when it's strongest
  • When it comes to applying sunblock, less is not more. Apply thoroughly and thickly, and don't forget about your hands, ankles, and the back of your neck, your feet and your entire backside. Use a full handful for your body and face
  • When you're out in the sun, make sure to use lip balm or chapstick with at least SPF 15. According to the American Society for Dermatological Surgery, 4% of skin cancers are found on the upper lip which is a pretty high number considering the small area
  • Reapply every 2 hours, more if you are active and sweating, and every time you get out of the water
  • Buy a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UV-A and UV-B rays, that is waterproof, and with at least 15 strength protection. Higher SPF lotion only provides 1%-2% extra protection
  • Since it is crucial to wear sunscreen on your face, if you have sensitive skin, many cosmetic companies have special sunscreens made specifically for your face, so there is no excuse for a burnt nose. Many people are allergic to PABA, an ingredient in many sunblocks, so make sure to read the labels
  • Keep in mind that you can get very burned through clouds so don't forget the sunblock even if the sun isn't directly shining on you

It is very easy to forget to reapply as often as you should, so try to stay as covered up as possible. While some sun is good for you, we all need a healthy dose of Vitamin D, studies suggest 20-30 minutes, when the sun isn't at its peak is best.
