While the Boss played a set on the streets of Philadelphia in support of Obama over the weekend, Sarah Palin played to a packed house at the Home Depot Center.
Palin had some strong words for Obama in regard to his connection with controversial Weathermen founder, William Ayers. Palin said of Obama's connection with the man whose group launched a campaign of bombings targeting the Pentagon and United States Capitol that Obama was someone who viewed the US "as being so imperfect . . . he is palling around with terrorists who would target their own country."
Just what is the relationship between Obama and Ayers? The New York Times ran a piece this weekend in an effort to explain just that — but that explanation is drawing criticisms for leaving out crucial facts and downplaying the relationship. To see the two sides, read more.
The Times piece paints a picture of sporadically crossed paths and circumstance, a relationship devoid of deep meaning. They quote Obama's explanation of Ayers as, “somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8.” The investigation draws a conclusion that the "two men do not appear to have been close." It also acknowledges that since 2002, there has been an apparent effort on Obama's part to not consort with Ayers, who once said, “I don’t regret setting bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough,” publicly.
The criticism starts with a changed title and continues to note instances where information and documentation was provided to the Times, including key supposed proof that showed Ayers was directly involved in the formation of the board of an education organization on which Obama served as chairman, but it was ignored. Questions also arise regarding grant money from the organization Obama and Ayers had in common — to fund projects by Ayers' former radical associates. Capping off the critique of the Times piece is the efforts made toward emphasizing the fact that Ayers is now rehabilitated.

Since their running out of time, as Obama said so perfectly in North Carolina yesterday, they plan to distract us away from the economic issues and attack his character. Good luck. When Ayers was at the peak of his domestic terrorist activities, Obama was 8 years old. I'm glad to hear Obama is attacking McCain right back. but with his judgment. Behold www.keatingeconomics.com. A documentary will be released at noon today showing the last financial bailout we did that centered around Charles Keating and his relationship with John McCain and four other politicians. I plan to forward this to all my friends and family and urge them to pass this on. If Ayers, Wright and Rezko is back in game, then McCain's affiliation with Charles Keating, which has been well documented should be as well. And while where at it, Palin should own up to her own crazy affiliations with religion and her husband's alliance with the AIP. Talk about crazy anti-americans.
1I would love for the candidate's religious persuasions and history to be brought back up. If Palin's is on display then my favorite crazy pastor Rev. Wright will get an extension of his 15 minutes.
2So Obama's relationship with this Ayers man is more of a big deal than the huge stinker that is known as the bailout?? If this is what is important to people then i can see why the bailout was needed. I am so over her and her jibes and insinuations while she herself has a vry funny past, why don't we really check that out, I am sure it would be pretty interesting.
3What's more interesting to me is learning that this is how a Maverick handles the fact that there's still an economic crisis threatening everything her beloved Joe Six Pack and his family owns. She's got no hope, no help to offer them so she'll try to distract them with scary stories. Palin would have loved Richard Nixon!
I knew you'd do this story this morning - but I didn't expect you to neglect to mention that Palin's claims have been discredited by major news outlets (even the NY Times which Palin says is "almost always right"), including the AP pointing out its racists overtones. It's been researched.
We should stay away from crap stories but if we don't, and we want be fair, now let's talk about McCain and his associates:
http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/make_believe_maverick_the_re...
4Well, why wouldn't we look at a relationship with a person who thinks he didn't bomb enough Americans? Why did the NYT conveniently overlook evidence that might give us a clearer picture of their relationship, and then call it "sporadically crossed paths and circumstance, a relationship devoid of deep meaning"?
5so what if barack obama had dinner with a terrorist once... sarah palin IS a terrorist.
6I agree Stephley. I think I read an AP story yesterday that said Palin's version of things had been discredited by ABC, CBS, MSN, CNN, NYT, Time, etc. I wish I could remember where I saw that.
Palin and McCain are just desperate. They were on a charity board for Education! How terrible!
McCain and Palin are beating this dead horse because they do not have answers for our REAL problems right now. Just like the debate, this is Palin dodging the question of economy.
7We already looked at it...months ago...it was well covered by many publications, and it lead us to a bridge to nowhere. Like I said, if the McCain camp plans to attack Obama's affiliations, then we should do the same about McCain's judgment, especially with Charles Keating.
8funny thing is that Ayers isn't the problem right now in America, why don't we deal with the present, as in all the problems America has at home and abroad? Isn't there a threat of recession, isn't America involved in a war, doesn't america have a problem with immigration, what health care and education? What about taxes? No the most pressing issue right now is Mr. Ayers. SMH. I really really hope obama wins, I wasn't a fan but then crazy lady Palin came on and made it so mmuch easier to like the more dignified Obama. And you know what I am so gosh darn tired of adulterers trying to be the voice of morality, in fact I'm just of McCain and Palin, they should take their maverickness and stick it where the sun don't shine.
9The follow up source was "world net daily".
????
10Really?
WSJ did a great piece on the Ayers story that never got any time because the truth is that Obama DID have a friendship with the guy AND they were involved for years together.
McCain was completely exonerated in the Keating Five issue, so that is meaningless.
Obama has a pattern of behavior and the pattern is that he associates with some real low lifes. That shows poor judgement and that should be a concern for voters. Maybe not the main concern, there are many more valid ones, but it does deserve some further exploration.

13My favorite line is, "I'm a radical, Leftist, small 'c' communist". And Obama's senate launch was at this small 'c' communist's house.
14The McCain campaign is trying to distract us from the issues?? You are kidding?? I am shocked!
I think that most liberals have been expecting this type of tactic...we've been prepared. The McCain camp is desperate and behind in the polls, and they aren't afraid of using the low road.
15I have absolutely no trust in Barrack Obama. he skillfully dodges questions about his life and his associations with radical extremists.
I think that america is crazy to vote for a man who had much of his upbringing in indonesia and associates himself with radicals, Ayers being one of them, especially when we are fighting a war against radical muslim extremists. You all say that this is a smear campaign by MCcain/Palin, but obama has NOT answered questions about his relationship with any extremist, and continues to say the repubs are ignoring issues, when really Obama is not wanting to answer these questions. For a country that is demanding transparency, Obama has not been very transparent about his relationships with these extremists. THAT IS UNDENIABLE, although some of you will deny it because you can't accept honest criticism of your candidate.
I still wonder why dems chose obama to be their candidate, when they could have had an honest candidate like biden or hillary on the ticket. Don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but there are alot of people that don't trust obama because of his associations and his failure to discuss them. If Obama wins, I do hope that I learn all my fears were displaced.
as far as the bailout...national security is more important than our economy. take an economics class...our economy will bounce back, it is made to do this WITHOUT GOVT INTERVENTION and TAX PAYER DOLLARS. The companies responsible will fail, and the govt. officials that supported these companies will be voted out. and we will rebound, like we always have.
16"I would love for the candidate's religious persuasions and history to be brought back up. If Palin's is on display then my favorite crazy pastor Rev. Wright will get an extension of his 15 minutes."
I agree--this would be interesting, especially in light of Palin inviting a Kenyan witch doctor to her church several times to bless her and ward off evil spirits.
It's kinda funny that the McCain camp is actually telling people what its last-minute strategy is. It sounds a bit fear-monger-y to me, but that's just my opinion.
17The sitting Senator who held the seat that Obama was running for wanted to introduce HER supporters to Obama. That is when the party was held at Ayers house. Someone was throwing a party FOR Obama.
You guys will try to keep anything a float!
Now there are stats that show even Georgia might not be safe for McCain. They are having to waste time campaigning in what used to be a safe state, Nebraska.
McCain has to announce that he wants to cut Medicade and Medicare.
Republicans are so desperate for a distraction right now!
18I'm not denying his exoneration, but his relationship with Keating and his judgement. If we're going to put Ayers in play, let's resurrect Keating 5 and examine that relationship as well. Obama was 8 when Ayers was at his peak of domestic terrorism, meanwhile McCain was a Senator and was called out for using "poor judgement" in that scandal. Again, his judgment comes into play and should be fair game.
19It is fair to examine Obama's relationship with this man. For voters everything is fair game as long as it is fair and not swiftboating.
My comment is really about Palin. To me she is the archetypical bratty kid sister. Pushing button in an inflammatory fashion and then hoping a smile then head tilt will make everything better and make her look mature.
20"The sitting Senator who held the seat that Obama was running for wanted to introduce HER supporters to Obama. That is when the party was held at Ayers house. Someone was throwing a party FOR Obama. "
Guess the sitting Senator's house was being painted or something. And Ayers' house was the only one available among all of the supporters.
21Also, Paul Begala pointed out this weekend on Meet the Press that McCain sat on the board of the U.S. Council for World Freedom, described as being related to World Anti-Communist League which was known for being a gathering place for extremist, racist and anti-Semitic. My point is, I don't necessarily think McCain is racist, but if you're going to talk about guilt by association, your nose better be cleaner than the one you're trying to trash.
22Piper, you are making assumptions now. What is the matter, the facts don't fit your preconceived notions?
23" if you're going to talk about guilt by association, your nose better be cleaner than the one you're trying to trash."\
Good point, Krradford.
24Speaking of assumptions, just what are my preconceived notions?
25If you want guilt by association, here are the other board members and associates:
Deborah Leff, then president of the Joyce Foundation
,Patricia A. Graham of the Spencer Foundation-
Adele Simmons of the MacArthur Foundation
What a group! People that are actually working to improve schools in their areas...that is just obscene! What scoundrels! Don't they know our crumbling school systems should just be left to rot? Citizens working together to make school systems better, what are they thinking?
26This woman disgusts me.
27Hm so he just happens to be at the house of this person and its been discredited by major news outlets..hm Fox News and Inside Edition hasn't discredited it yet...then it MUST be BS it MUST be true he mongers with Terrorists because FOX NEWS and Inside Edition is the bible.. HAHAHAHAHHA sorry couldn't resist.
28Is anybody really surprised that the McCain campaign has gone so negative when they are so far down in the polls? It is crunch time!
29"If we're going to put Ayers in play, let's resurrect Keating 5 and examine that relationship as well."
These are not the same situation because again, the Senate Ethics committee found McCain to be innocent of these allegations. Obama simply denies spending any time with Ayers when there is a lot of evidence that speaks to the contrary. Granted, there is no trial for him (obv.) but there is still a question mark over those associations and there is no question mark when it comes to McCain.
30"What is the matter, the facts don't fit your preconceived notions?"
Sorry Jill are you talking to Piper or yourself?
31C'mon Jillness, you know those people don't have real responsibilities. Just like community organizers.
32(Off-topic but seriously it is time to have nested comment threads...)
33We're less than 30 days out, is anyone really surprised that either camp is bringing out the negative campaigning?
34sooooo true em (about nested comments, not community organizers
)
35What do we want? Nested comments! When do we want them? NOW!
I'm not surprised about the negative stuff on both sides. It's crunch time!
36Me thinks Jill has left the building.
37I'm definitely not surprised that they're bringing this up again.
However, I do think it's worth examining.
It's strange because when Obama met this guy, he was a professor at U of Illinois and his past was past.
But are there some things in life that are so disgraceful that you should never be allowed back into normal society after doing them?
I know the U of Illinois took a lot of sh*t for hiring him. I can see why.
I read a bunch of articles about this last night after seeing Palin's quote. The conclusion reached in a number of articles was that Ayers had become fully accepted back into the society of Chicago and had been for some time.
So if I imagine Obama dealing with him in that context, it doesn't seem as crazy as it would otherwise. I mean, we take our social queues from others. And if the current senator invites you to someone's house, it indicates "this person is accepted."
Despite the fact that this relationship is a bit problematic, I don't think that Obama is in any way affiliated with him, or shaped by his political beliefs.
38is TS around? I wonder how that campaign is going.
BTW HF! Yesterdaya was Kate Winslet's bday... I thought of you!
39Did Palin really get a Kenyan witchdoctor to do that cos let me tell you ladies witchdoctors aren't things to get played with they are more witches and less doctors. Think voodoo only a million times more freaky and more inclined to use human body parts in rituals. How does she as a Christian reconcile with that?
40I think that this story is very irresponsible! When people use the term terrorist these days people automatically think of extremest 9/11 not a domestic extremest. There are too many people in this country who believe what they here and do not go beyond what they are told by their candidates. Having coffee with someone does not qualify as palling around.
41As long as people are willing to eat fear, they will feed it to you.
I hope the population is smarter this time.
(I have seen the video where Palin gets the blessing but I don't remember the Kenyan being a "witchdoctor". My understanding is he was protecting her against "witchcraft".
Someone go tell all the Wiccans to drop their athames and give up on Palin, she's been magicproofed.
42The whole witch doctor thing is heavily unsubstantiated which is why I think the major news outlets don't touch it... its pretty hard to find an unbiased source that discusses it.
43As a God fearing Christian she believes in witchcraft, and everything that comes with it? Does she realise that witch doctors don't dabble in white magic or healing herbs a lot of the time, they dabble in BLACK MAGIC, the kind that requires soethign to hurt or to die for it to work? Doesn't she believe her God will protect her? he isn't good enough so she needs a human being to do God knows what to protect her? She is a NUTCASE, can you imagine her calling a witchdoctor to bless the whitehouse, him burying chicken legs in each corner of the house etc etc. Now this is what a redneck hillbilly hick looks like and she's going to be the next VP if elected. SMH y'all are in serious trouble.
44Hausfrau since when has that stopped the media?
45There is video of it haus.
46YAY Happy Birthday Kate! We're both Libras.
47Stooping to this level of smear is just disgusting and shows huge desperation and a lack of anything constructive to bring to the table--par for the course. I'm just glad that it seems most people are disinclined to take this crap seriously.
48sexy - there is a video but its pretty grainy and crappy and taken from so far away thats its pretty easy to dub whatever you want right over the video!
its not exactly hard evidence.
49Well that's the thing McCain/Palin supporters are going to give them the benefit of the doubt on any rumors of shady dealings and questionable activity. Obama/Biden supporters are going to give them the benefit of the doubt on any rumors of shady dealings and questionable activity. So...uhhhh...now what? Guess I'll have a drink. Is 11am too early?
