John McCain will reportedly stop employing staff, airing ads, and sending mailers in Michigan, instead relocating resources to Wisconsin, Ohio, and Florida. Since McCain is taking Michigan tentatively out of his win column, let's take a closer look at the electoral map. We hear all about national polls, but those don't matter on November 4.

To see how the toss up states looked as of yesterday, and for some analysis of which states each candidate needs, read more.
As of yesterday this is how the candidates' chances looked according to Real Clear Politics: New Mexico: Obama +5; North Carolina Obama +3; Obama +3; Missouri Obama +1 Florida: Obama +3 ; Virginia: McCain +3; Indiana: McCain +1; Michigan: Obama +10; Nevada: Obama +1 ; Ohio McCain +1 ; Minnesota: Obama +11 Pennsylvania: Obama +9; Obama +9; New Hampshire: Obama +10 .
Obviously a million things could happen before November 4. The map indicates that while McCain needs to pick up all the Bush states, besides maybe New Mexico and Nevada, Obama has more options to get to 270. Obama can lose Ohio and Florida, if he picks up New Mexico, Colorado, and Iowa. If McCain loses Florida, he has to win both Ohio and Pennsylvania. If McCain wins Indiana and Missouri, he still needs to win Ohio, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, and Minnesota to get to 270. If McCain loses Minnesota, McCain needs Nevada and New Hampshire to tie (gasp!!!) Obama at 269. While all these scenarios can make your head spin, imagine what a tie would be like!!

John, if you wake me up before 11 on the weekends I will start eyeing Barry for pres.
1Washington is only leaning toward blue? Is that because dead people can't vote in King County anymore?
2Um yea, that's because us "Michiganders" see through the female VP bullcrap. After all, our Governess is a woman (hence "Governess"). Besides, we know that you won't get anywhere in a state where the big businesses screwed the population over by exporting all the jobs, and you support those institutions.
3
4I can't believe Minnesota is a toss up. It's been such a Dem state. But big into hockey...
5And I just read that polls in Ohio, Florida and even North Carolina were leaning toward Obama/Biden.
That makes the map pretty blue.
Crazy! But the election is not today and anything can happen out on the trail, in the world and at the debates.
So who knows?
6The Obama electoral strategy is showing itself to be brilliant thus far. Doesn't hurt that his campaign and platform are much more in tune with the times.
7He's going to have some trouble with Nevada. Our state is increasingly leaning towards Obama already especially after the first two Palin interviews. Nevada quickly swung left after her second interview.
8Can we all vote tomorrow? Please?!
9LMAO Wren "big into hockey"

11naw-naw-naw-naw -- naw-naw-naw-naw -- HEY-HEY-HEY -- GOODBYE!!!!
Rumor has it West Virginy is getting greyer and slightly bluer everyday
12there is no way NC will be going blue, i read an article last week where the spread was 10 pts
13i can't ever figure out how that all works. thank goodness he employs analysts on his team to figure out where it's better to shift money and all that.
14Florida better not f*ck up, seriously.
15Wade, I was reading this a.m. that the McCain team in Florida just held a panic meeting and they're bringing Palin in this weekend.
16That's what I like to hear, good looking out Stephley.
17oh please... a panic meeting?
yes, i'm sure thats 100% factual.
18LOL none of use can be believing that any of this polling/maps are a predictor to what will occur on Nov 4th/5th? I'm waiting to see the real results...I don't trust these polls and I don't trust the people who take them to actually do what they say they are going to do in the voting both.
19Oh no.. there is too much time to panic..
What they need is a spa day.
McCain needs someone to loosen him up, remove the stick from his ass and slip some Sam-E into all of his beverages. While Palin gets coached how to not turn into a caricature of herself and stick to the talking points in some really concise controlled interviews by Fox News only that are only conducted on her extreme right side profile to hide all her winking. gee willee gollackers, doggone it.. you betcha powpow
.
And they can win back some states.
20Is good ol Jeb still in control down there in Florida? Someone needs to keep an eye on him
21Sure maybe the Pubs will steal Florida, the Dems are already stealing Ohio, so it will be a wash....
22EXACTLY hausfrau.. its an election piracy!! ARRRRRR! We will hold Michigan for ransom till you give us the Floridians and Ohio to boot!
23I'm painting Florida RED
24I'd actually take Jeb over this fool we got now, Charlie Greasy Christ. This dude is a joke, I hate him.
25I had to lol at the people from Mich. calling their female governor a governess! When I think governess, I think of Mary Poppins, not a woman ruling a state.
26No no... I don't want the Pubs getting Florida. This is my sh*t, this is my state I'm in control of this motherf*cker. I will lend Florida to the Dems. in order to elect Obama. I'm just schooling you guys on the government down here. Cause that's how the pimps do it down in Florida.

October 2, 2008
TALLAHASSEE — Florida Republican leaders hastily convened a top secret meeting this week to grapple with Sen. John McCain's sagging performance in this must-win state.
Their fears were confirmed Wednesday when four new polls showed Sen. Barack Obama leading, a reversal from just a few weeks ago when McCain was opening up an advantage.
The polls come amid a cascade of bad news about the economy, an issue that McCain has struggled with in recent days.
With some grass roots organizers complaining about coordination problems with the campaign, Republican Party chairman Jim Greer gathered top officials at the state headquarters in Tallahassee on Tuesday afternoon. He swore the group to secrecy.
When asked about it by the St. Petersburg Times, Greer confirmed the meeting. He largely declined to discuss what was said, but sought to play down any strife.
Over the course of an hour, described by some as tense, Greer offered a forceful assessment of where McCain stands in Florida and what needs to be done to win in a battleground state that could decide the election.
"I have a responsibility to make sure things are done right, and we win these campaigns," Greer said. "I'm sure everyone in the room understands that I take that responsibility very seriously."
28Top secret meeting...... uh oh, that means trouble.
29ok, maybe i'm just stating the obvious...
"He largely declined to discuss what was said"
and then "Over the course of an hour, described by some as tense..."
Ok, if he doesn't say what was said, then how do they know exactly what was said?
30furthermore, if the group was sworn to secrecy, how do we know any of this is true?
31its like all those "secret" meetings bush has.... only no one knows when it is/was or what was said... but they know they happen!!!
haha!
32I have met Charlie Crist many many times, and he is a smarmy smiley tan MF'er.
33Exactly he's greasy as hell. Fool was still living w/ his parents when he got elected.
34No surprises that my home state (AK) looks like the reddest spot on the map. I am surprised that WA is only leaning towards blue, but then again, I've never lived anywhere but liberal Seattle. I don't know the rest of the state stacks up.
35Wow I cannot believe my home state of Indiana is leaning. It has been years since my state has voted any presidential election other than Republican. Yet the border state of Kentucky is confirmed Red? Kentucky has been known in the past to vote Dem when compared to Indiana.
I mean they both usually vote Republican but Indiana has done it more.
That is why this map doesn't make sense to me. And I have heard grumblings that Kentucky may not be voting Red like they think. Not that any of this matters much since IN/KY electoral votes are not up there in numbers. But every little bit counts.

37Secret meetings leak like sieves Haus, everybody wants to make sure their take on things gets out.
38If thats the case then why would the McCain camp paint it as panic?
39i think all the states should be purple
40
41
42Just guessing Haus, but if I work on a campaign and it looks like we're losing an important state, I want to make sure it looks like someone else's fault - so I might suggest to a reporter that someone I'm working with is in panic mode. It's not as if these guys move as a group from campaign to campaign, in either party.
43I don't get the numbers. Why is Minn. grey if Obama is up by 11 points?
I love fivethirtyeight.com
44Toss Up states sound so pervy. I like it.
45TS - I think grey means battleground states in general, those that don't consistently vote one way or the other and have the potential to go either way. Someone might be up 10 pts today, but tomorrow that could be another story... if you check out Yahoo! Politics they have a political dashboard thats pretty cool because you can select a state and a day to see what the poll was for that day... there are some states where someone was up 10pts last week and now its neck and neck.
46I don't think so, haus, because Ohio is typically a battleground state, and it is blue, same with Penn. and Mich.
47It feels so good to VA in play. My more conservative neighbor has been leaning purple for a while now. MD is always true blue.
48I don't care what the polls say. Almost any state could switch colors in the weeks to come. Get ready for an October surprise!
49Washington state is "leaning"? Are you kidding? Aren't we always blue?
