If I had a dollar for every time my mom said to me, "it's not what you say, it's how you say it," I'd be able to finance the bailout all by myself. That in mind, the coverage of John McCain's appearance in front of the Des Moines Register editorial board flummoxes me. The AP I mean god bless 'em, they're quick and fair — but the headline, "McCain turns irritable, sarcastic in interview" set my expectations high.
They provided a series of quotes, which reading them coupled with the headline made me nervous. McCain said:
Really? I haven't detected that in the polls, I haven't detected that among the base. If there's a Georgetown cocktail party person who, quote, calls himself a conservative who doesn't like her, good luck. I don't dismiss him. I think the American people have overwhelmingly shown their approval.
And:
The answer is that most of my life, in serving my country, I have had health care. I did go for a period of time when the health care wasn't very good.
This plus Jonathan Martin saying a "feisty McCain duels," with the Register and calling him "emphatic, combative, and at times surly" and "hard-edged," I was expecting fireworks of an apocalyptic magnitude . . .
You've seen "what" he said — to see the "how" part, read more.
Is it so bad? I mean I wouldn't say combative or surly? I might go impatient, tentatively bordering on flippant, but this? What's the big deal?

C'mon, do we really want to start debating whether he was combative or surly? Face it, they both sound better than the words I'd choose for McCain: cranky and crochety.
1He reminds me of Dr. Evil. anyone else?
2I agree LilGlamDiva. Do you remember that scene (can't remember which movie) when Dr. Evil asks the government for 100 billion dollars and Scott was telling him that was way to much money and Dr. Evil starts that whole zip it montage. That was this vid. reminded me of.
3Well I couldn't see the questioner but her voice was pretty neutral throughout. Sen. McCain however was completely flippant, arrogant and dismissive BUT not through his words, through his body language.
4"The answer is that most of my life, in serving my country, I have had health care. I did go for a period of time when the health care wasn't very good."
He never forgets to remind us that he was a prisoner of war.
5"Georgetown cocktail person"?
6I vote surly. And I love that word and use it frequently.
7....and you notice how Gov. Palins qualifications became circular very quickly. Once he realized he was repeating the same thing he stopped.
8I did notice hypnoticmix.
9I noticed that too, blu.
10Yeah, I definitely think the headlines are misleading. But then again, this good be him being surly and irritable and sarcastic. We've yet to see his "real" temperament, which I heard is not pretty.
11I vote surly as well, but what was the comment about FDR not addressing the public on television? Didn't he go to great lengths to hide his disability? I am not as old as McCain, so I was far from alive then. Anyone have an idea?
12I don't understand how McCain saying "a Georgetown cocktail person who quote calls them self a 'conservative' and doesn't like Palin...", and then throws his hand in the gesture of "who cares about them" could not be considered irritable and surly.
13He also had this general look of irritation the whole time. The complete give away which made me laugh out loud was that rocking in the chair. He was pissed.
14Ehh there was some irritated tone and some body language that I would interpret as surly but I think debating this is kind of pointless. Supporters will defend him and opposers will attack. What's the point?
15Because it's fun....YIPPIE!
16here here kas!
17Sarcasm aside I disagree I've often criticized Sen. Obama and any other Dem. who needs to be called out.

I was completely off in my description but here's the scene I was talking about.
19that is true hypno, you're good like that!
20Yes, lovely Hypno, you are the exception to the rule.
21Lol "She's the most popular governor in America"...because her state is so small!
22But I want to belong to a group. Maybe I can start an exceptional alliance.
23He sure looks like he is feeling it all slip between his fingers. He is starting to get nasty & defensive because he realizes his little plan of picking Palin as his running mate is backfiring on him.
24He is rude & unlikeable. I sure as hell wouldn't want that guy running the country. He seems to have a hard time controlling his anger.
I think all his campaigning is making him tired and grumpy. I think that's the real reason behind him 'suspending' his campaign.
25hypno aren't you already part of liberal sugar?
26I've been trying to find that. What did they do hide it under a rock?
27I hear you supercharger if I had to do what they have to do seven days a week I would be one b*tch you do not want to reckon with. LOL!
28It should be on your page, i think. Under groups. Or if you click unread by your profile picture at the top of the page, it might show you all the stories we have been posting. I think. Stephley or True might be better at helping.
29I'm all for good journalism: If you are going for a point, press forward.
However, repeating yourself without moving forward is not productive. All I see is McCain getting bored with the repetition.
Looks to me like a small-city reporter trying to make the most of an opportunity...and proving that she is not ready for a bigger market. The headlines just reflect her annoyance at her failure.
30I'm curious, is it good journalism to hound? How many times do you get to ask a question before it's considered badgering?
31Oh is that where everyone went?
32Journalist ask questions over & over because the McCain duo seem to have mastered the art of NOT answering the questions they are being asked. Its so frustrating to watch their interviews because both McCain & Palin never actually answer the questions they are asked.
33"Its so frustrating to watch their interviews because both McCain & Palin never actually answer the questions they are asked."
True downtownbrown I have observed this as well but the same can be said for a few Sen. Obama interviews where a direct answer is not given. It's a politicians vice they all do it.
34True, but those two just seem to take it to another level.
35he wasn't spitting or anything, and I'm sure I've been grumpier among friends, but he sure ain't presidential.
36He answered the question. What more do you want him to say?
37kas, it's easy to find the group, but no one can join since it is a closed group.
38I usually just go look at the "public" posts
He seems a little passive aggressive, the same tone that was all over the RNC and when I talk to my pushy grandma. That's just personality, like it or not.
39I can just imagine how some of you are going to be when you are old.
40hypno, you can get yourself one of the little dots!
41Oh yeah? Why don't you lay it on us?
42I think the moment where he shifts his chair so it is more directed at the speaker, flares his arms out like plumage, and stares down the questioner is a total Cesar Milan moment. He is trying to be intimidating and to be Alpha Dog. Very domineering body language. Kind of sad, actually. Between this and not looking at Obama during the debates, he is looking a little more unhinged than I had previously thought.
Instead of just denying that anyone who wasn't politically motived might be questioning Palin's experience, he should have instead said why that doesn't matter. He doesn't realize he can't win over the people who are sincere in their uncertainty, simply by blaming it on elitism.
43Well he wasn't in the best mood but it's not like he called someone a trollopy c*nt!
44i just saw a clip from a cbs interview between couric and palin. it is absolutely unbelievable....palin was unable to come up with one supreme court cases besides roe v. wade. i am mystified that someone with such little knowledge and experience on a national level could possible be elected VP of the US. it is an absolute embarrassment and we should be ashamed of ourselves....any highschool student should be able to name a supreme court case besides roe v wade
45here is the clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBt0r9Exv2I
I think that if anyone were to watch the entire interview they'd see that he does indeed get quite irritated at the questions being posed to him. The entire interview reminded me of Yosemite Sam, with McCain growing ever more frustrated with each question asked of him. You can watch the entire interview here. http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?category=videonet...
46I've often thought that he probably has some mental issues as a result of his years as a POW, which is not to defend his temper tantrums, but a good reason to consider his ability to be president. Could you see him losing his temper or refusing to look some world leader in the eye if he doesn't like them?
I agree with downtownbrown; McCain thought he was very clever with his choice of Palin and now sees it starting to slip away. She can't hold up to scrutiny. I also don't believe she was vetted much and that he tends to make spontaneous decisions like that often, without fully considering the ramifications.
47I would agree surly and flippent, not necessarily combative.
48Why is it an issue? Because he might be the President of the United States. He can't seem flippent about stuff, especially his non qualified running mate. This shows how out of touch he is too.
People love her!
I do think he seemed flippant but not surely. He does seem to be very condescneding at times though. He is delusional if he thinks that the majority of Republicans love her. Has he not read or seen anything in the news or paper? Doesn't he have advisers that give him information?
49I thoughthe seemed tired of answering the same question over and over. I got that same feeling with the Palin/Couric interview. Here's a thought, ask a question, listen to the answer, and if you don't like the answer, put that in your article.
