A while back Republican strategists imagined a situation where John McCain would sweep the election. Now, it's Barack Obama's team picturing a generous November for its candidate.
The case for a strong Obama showing on Nov. 4 includes his muscular organization in swing states, his popularity among first-time voters, a surge in newly registered Democrats, and indications that he can pick up at least nine George W. Bush-voting states. A new poll showing Obama up by five in typically-red Virginia, adds a piece of support to the landslide pie.
Right now Obama is up eight points in Gallup's (volatile) national tracking poll. As for Electoral College predictions, when leaners are included Obama has 255 compared to McCain's 227. Do all signs point to an Obama landslide?

"Nay. Wishful thinking. This is going to be close."
This is no way going to be a landslide for either candidate.
1i just got my absentee voter ballot in the mail! yay. i go to college in chicago, il but had lived in las vegas, nv before, thus i wanted to cast my vote in nevada.
2Unfortunately the young deomcratic vote which the democrats always depend on to win elections seem to not show up to vote eventhough they declare themseleves and say they have intentions to vote. So unless they actually vote this time around (*ahem second Bush term *ahem*) ...its going to be close
3As much as I'd love to believe there is going to be a landslide victory for Obama, this is going to be a nail biter for sure.
4as much as the young people or anyone really, is a fan of obama, you can find just as many for mccain. my parents, in a care package, grafittied the damn box with anti obama/pro mccain slogans...even if me and my friends are all for obama, my dad and his friends are all for mccain....as much as im pushing for obama of course itll be close.
5I think it's going to be a very close call.
6There are too many things still in play to take anything for granted.
7I think it's going to be close -- but I also think that the people young and old will come out to vote! I think that the young will have a voice in this election -- they will shock us all.
8I wish he would win in a landslide, but I think it will be too close to call.
And I'm a young voter and I will definitely he out voting on November 4. I voted in the primaries for Barack Obama as well. Not all young people are like Paris Hilton, who was a part of the "Rock the Vote" campaign last time and didn't even vote.
9be, not he*
10Agreed, cyl. The youth turnout always ends up disappointing.
But! I voted yay anyways. I predict a relatively close popular vote but an electoral landslide for Obama. I have become increasingly ubb-sest with fivethirtyeight dot com.
11Since when did 8 points suggest a land slide. Damn I feel like Rip Van Winkle now I took a nap and everything's changed. We still have a couple of debates and a whole months worth of time for people to become disgruntled and judgmental about things that have nothing to do with being the President of the United States it's way to soon to make that call IMO.
12I think Barack Obama is going to win by a landslide. Obama can relate to the average joe and mccain can't. With the economy suffering every day, more people are going to vote for Obama. Why Mccain? He wont help our economy and the middle class! Just watch Thursday's debate with Biden-Palin on Thursday; obama will be up In the polls on Friday! Vote Obama 2008 if you care about your future!
13While I would love it to be a landslide because it would restore my faith in Americans - doubtful. I know far too many people that support McCain for whatever reason so I think it will be close.
14I just can't wrap my mind around WHY people who care about the economy will vote for mccain!?
15but that's just my opinion so nobody go getting their panties in a bunch, k?
I HOPE its a landslide!!
Haha pinky, I totally agree with you. And I think the economy landslide will help Obama in a major way... I don't know if he'll win by a landslide but I think he'll win!!
16Eh.. by landslide, I meant nosedive, in terms of the economy... I guess I had "landslide" stuck in my head!
17barack will win, but god help him with all the crap he's going to have to deal with.
18I think it will be a pretty gosh darn close race.
19My guess would be that it will be close.
20Ever since I heard about the "caging" that is happening in Michigan, I really see this as an intense fight...and it won't be easy.
In Michigan, RNC groups are getting the lists of homes that have been foreclosed on, and are planning on challenging the people when they come to vote, because they are going to say that their voter registration doesn't reflect what precinct they live in. I have heard the Obama campaign has already started looking into that, but I can only imagine that there are other dirty tricks that will be played.
21There was a story here on Citizen about the foreclosure voting scandal. I think it's too early to tell what is going to happen on November 4. I can't believe anyone is still voting for McCain, especially after he named Sarah Palin as his VP.
22There are some dirty tricks being played on the Dem side too, I mean ACORN?
No one's hands are clean here.
23roarman,
I was in a speed-reading/study strategies class the other day and overheard a guy in class talking about Palin being the only candidate they liked ... b/c they could actually relate to her. And that they were going to vote McCain/Palin in part b/c of her! Another person said "yeah, I mean I'd be nervous and mess up in an interview too". I was really amazed.
To the others talking about the McCain/economy thing, the same guy said a day earlier that he has been a life-long Democrat (he was probably about 45), but he wasn't going to be voting for Obama b/c he felt like if he did then his taxes would go up, the economy would crap out, etc etc. Again, I was really amazed.
24I think Obama will definitely take it! Sarah Palin was a terrible choice.
25I'm die hard Obama and I hope it's a landslide....but I know the Republicans still have tricks up their sleeves. It's gonna be close - McCain and Palin will go down scratching and clawing...
26I'm die hard Obama and I hope it's a landslide....but I know the Republicans still have tricks up their sleeves. It's gonna be close - McCain and Palin will go down scratching and clawing...
27Lots of people voted for George Bush because he was someone they could have a beer with and look where that got us. Since when did we want our Presidents be our buddies? It's ridiculous. Im a working mother and I can't relate to Palin at all. Bit really nothing suprises me, if we could George 4 more years, we can definitely put Palin in the White House.
28It's going to be close.
Although, don't assume everyone who falls into the "youth vote" is a democrat. I know of three 21 yr. old conservatives on here.
29...wtf. My post was supposed to say that I am a 22 year old conservative who will NOT be voting for Palin.
31fox will you abstain from voting or vote obama?
32you don't have to answer that btw if its too personal
33I think it's gonna be really close... sadly...
On another note, there's an article on Newsweek a few weeks back that mentioned something about people's voting tendencies. A lot of Republicans tend to vote for someone they can relate to, someone "just like them." Democrats, on the other hand, tend to vote for someone they look up to/admire, someone they think will make better decisions than they would. I wish I had kept that issue...
34I'm pretty torn.
35foxie,
I "subscribed" to the thread ... in the email that I got it said:
"
36It'll be close, but sadly, with the economy in the crapper and the unpopularity of the Bush presidency, my bet is on Obama for the win.
Guess we'll see, though. Things can change in the blink of an eye. And I hope to God that they do!
Wish I could vote. Unfortunately, my 18th birthday isn't until February.
37omg lol!!!
38foxie, I copied and pasted exactly what you put in your comment (I got it through email) and it deleted half of my comment. Exactly where I started the copied part (right after the ")
lol weird!!! I wonder what it about the comment that doesn't show up!
The open bracket sign indicates the beginning of html, so nothing after it shows up until you close the bracket. This sign:

haha wow I feel stupid... I use basic html code a lot.
41Thank you TS
Let's just be honest here, ok. Yes, the "young" vote is mostly for Obama. But--there are many many college kids who live away from home, have not requested an absentee ballot, and have not registered at their new address.
42You can just go ahead and throw millions of votes in the toilet. Yes?
Millions.
Please contradict me, someone.
jan - I'll contradict you, many states allow you to vote in whatever state the college is in. With all the voter drives being done on campuses, I'm sure a lot of those kids will turn out. I don't think it will be statistically more significant than any other year though. But I would also say that millions is an exaggeration as I don't think its likely all those kids would turn out.
43I was at that rally, 35K people, it was INSANE - Detroiters sure love Obama!
He was introduced by Denise Ilitch, Detroit Red Wings owner who said that while some people think hockey moms are for McCain, HOCKEYTOWN is all Obama!
...as for the topic, it will be close, and it is because people who do care about the economy don't understand they are voting against their own self-interest when they vote McCain (I'm talking to you lower/middle class southerners who ignore the stuff the makes a difference and vote based on things that don't effect their daily life as much such as abortion and gay marriage - yes these things matter, but at the end of the day Roe v. Wade won't be overturned and you can't "fix the gays," but things like the economy and corporate regulation make a direct impact but get ignored by voters who fall into dramatic story lines of the election)
44I can't even understand why this race was every close to begin with, but the fact that it was makes me hard to really believe it will be a landslide victory. It's a nice thought I guess, I would just be happy with a win!
Note: My favorite football team went to the superbowl four years in a row and didn't win once, so...
45The Buffalo Bills?
46Haha, yes, so you can see how polls would be like, "Obama wins in a landslide" and I won't believe it until it is through the uprights..
47But....4-0 so far this season! Even though we haven't made playoffs in, like, a decade.
48A landslide would be boring. I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in the young vote. They talk, but usually don't walk the walk. Here's to hoping how the young Republicans get out there though...
49I'm okay with boring.
