Just about every woman I know is on, or has been on, the pill. And even if it's not your preferred method of birth control, we can all agree on two things: it prevents us from getting pregnant, and it can regulate our periods. I'm sure you've heard other "facts" about the pill too, but not all of them are true. So here's a list of the top five myths about birth control pills:
- The pill makes you gain weight: Some women may put on a few when taking the pill, but research shows that the pill isn't directly the cause. The estrogen contained in the pill can cause a bloated feeling, but not an actual weight gain. The progestin in the pill may increase a woman's appetite, so she'll eat more and gain weight, but it's because she's increasing her calorie consumption. The pill may also cause water retention, but switching to a lower dose pill often helps.
- You should take a break from the pill once in a while: While it seems like a good idea to give your body a rest from the pill, it isn't necessary. Birth control pills are considered safe and they even offer you health benefits, such as a decreased risk of ovarian cancer if you've been on them for a while. In fact, occasional breaks can actually cause problems. Remember all the side effects you had when you first started the pill? Well, they're likely to show up again as soon as you go back on the pill — hardly sounds worth it to me.

- The pill is not safe and it causes birth defects: Birth control pills are one of the most researched prescription drugs on the market. While it's true that there are health risks involved (just as there are with all drugs), overall, the pill is safe. There's no need to worry about it causing birth defects, even if you accidentally take the pill while being pregnant.
- Long term pill use can affect fertility: The pill will prevent pregnancy while you're on it, but there is no connection between the pill affecting your future fertility. Once you do decide to stop taking the pill to have a baby, it may take your body some time to get back on its normal cycle. If a woman experiences problems conceiving after going off the pill, she may have always had a fertility problem but was unaware of it because she wasn't trying to get pregnant.
- All birth control pills are basically the same: While it's true that all birth control pills have the same goal — to prevent pregnancy — there are hundreds of different kinds. Not only do they contain different combinations of medications, but some are estrogen-free, and some contain lower doses. Some will even prevent you from getting your period all together, and some can decrease PMS symptoms. A woman may have to try out a few types of pills in order to find the one that works best for her body.
Tune in tomorrow to see five more myths about the pill.

good to know! Thanks Dear!
1i love the pill. it keeps my skin good, my periods light and regular, and i don't have a kid so....
it's been working so far
but i've had one issue very recently and hoping someone has advice for me:
i decided to take my pill consecutively for three months to skip my period almost the entire summer (ie: didnt take the sugar pills) and it was all fine and dandy but when i finally got my period it was super light, and then for the following month i was spotting almost daily, and it got worse with intercourse. has this ever happened to anyone else?
2i saw my doc. who is testing me now for everything under the sun, and i currently have my period again so hopefully following this one, i will be back on track and normal again (my doc. assumes this will be the case)...but it was kinda scary
anyone else ever do this and have this happen? i have skipped some periods before but this issue has never happened to me!
i use the pill since sixteen. now i'm 20 yearsold. againts what was said, i do not gain weight.
My doctor explained to me that this weight gain doesn't exist anymore. formerly existed because of high doses of hormones, but it no more exist.
i trust in pill, and for me it hasn't brought side effects.
3Yay fpr the Pill..I am too paranoid not to take it..its such a relief to know exactly when my period will come. My bf also uses a condom so we are extra safe
4my poor little sister has just had her first period on the pill and she is so sick. it has made her so nauseated and she also had bad cramps. not sure if that means she's on the wrong one for her body or if she needs to just get used to it, but i feel for her. overall, it makes my periods very light with minimal cramping, and it's very punctual!
5I've had nothing but problems with the pill. All of the side effects have been really terrible, even on pills with the lowest dose possible. After the last pill I tried (Yaz), I don't think I'll be trying the pill again any time soon.
6I've been on the pill since I was 14. I'm 20 now, and I don't want kids for at least another 5 years. But, I had a friend tell me that you aren't supposed to use the pill for more than 5 years, and that if you do you can get all sorts of health issues. What she said kinda freaked me out, but I don't want to get pregnant, so I stay on the pill. Is what she said true? Or is she just trying to scare me?
7I've used Yaz for over a year and I'm obsessed with it. Those silly commercials are true!
8LoveSarah -- I've never heard that being on the pill for 5+ is harmful. I've been on it for 9 years and I'll still living
Seriously, what kind of "health issues" is she talking about? Sounds like something someone
heard once and passed it around as fact.
9I was on it from the time I was 17 until I was 28 and there's nothing wrong with me.
10I haven't experienced any side effects with my current pill (a generic version of Ortho-Tricyclen) but at first I was on Yasmin and that gave me horrible mood swings and a yeast infection.
11LoveSarah- My mom's been on the pill from the time she was fifteen until she turned forty-five, and she's still alive and well except for a thyroid problem that runs in our family anyway :]
12I LOVE being on the pill. I saw a commercial for Yaz while in Seattle and I knew it was the one for me. I used to have horribly unbearable mood swings and now that's pretty much gone. No weight gain, my skin is fantastic. Much lighter, shorter periods. It's all win win.
13I have been on the pill for 4 years and have tried two different kinds (ortho and yaz) and I found that both of them gave me very severe cramps, more than I had before I was on the pill. But still I'm on it because it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.
14Having recently stopped taking BCPs for the first time since 1992 since my husband and I are trying to get pregnant, I can honestly say I am hating life sans BCPs.
15Interesting article. and NikkoBlues.. good luck TTC...
16When I was on the pill, I gained 20 pounds and felt very irritable. Studies have also shown that hormonal BC can cause ovarian, cervical, and uterine cancer, not prevent it.
17beautifulmel ... can I see some of those studies?
