My husband and I have been searchng for a house to buy for at least three years. Last week we found what we thought was our dream home. Perfect neighborhood, perfect size, everything! BUT, our car won't fit in the garage, it's two inches too long. I know, I know, the easy answer is. If it's your dream home, why not just get a smaller car? But its acatually bigger issue. We like having our SUV for skiing and other activities, so it's not just a car, it's a matter of lifestyle, I think. So what do you guys think, is our dream home worth sacrificing a larger car, or should we keep looking?

How important is it for you to park in the garage? For me, I HAVE to park in the garage...so my fiance and I keep that in mind when buying houses and/or cars. I say, if you don't care if you park in the driveway, then get the house!
1what about a smaller SUV??? If it's only 2 inches too long, I'm sure you can find another SUV taht slightly smaller that way you have a car that fits in the garage and you dont compromise the comfort of driving an SUV

2How about building on to the garage, or building a new garage?
3BUY THIS HOUSE. Do whatever you have to do about the car thing. Everyone else had great ideas for that. But you will likely regret it if you don't buy this otherwise perfect house. No house is going to be exactly the way you like it. Hideous wallpaper, nasty tile, too small garage, they all have their problems.
4Buy the house darling!
5PARK IN THE DRIVEWAY 0R 0N THE STREET... PR0BLEM S0LVED...
6buy the house. after searching for three years, it's time especially if it's 99% perfect.
7OMG girl, buy the house!!! It's too hard to find a good house in a good neighbourhood these days to sacrifice the chance at having what you want! I say modify the garage or get another vehicle, SUVs are bad for the environment anyway and they flip over too easily (I've seen it happen and it wasn't pretty!!)
8Buy the house + Parking outside = Dream house & dream car
9I agree, buy the house! If it's your dream home you always modify it to make the garage slightly bigger and in the mean time park outside or get an SUV thats slightly smaller. Honestly, it's not that big of a deal. You can find a way to make it work! Get the house!
10Between my boyfriend and I, there are four cars. They're all outside ('cause the eight motorcycles between us occupy the garage). If you've been searching for three years, buy the house. Park outside or build on - you'll figure it out.
11Wow that is a yuppy problem if I have ever heard one.
Help, I can't fit my huge SUV that I use for ski vacations into the garage of my dream home!
Sorry, I'm sure it's a real dilemma but looking at it in a detached way made me laugh.
Everyone else has great suggestions, so I will echo them.
SUVs are bad for the environment. If you must have one, get a smaller one. All the trustafarians I know drive Subarus because they have good roof racks and are pretty compact.
There are always streets and driveways in which to put the car.
12After the 3 years of searching I say buy it! leave the SUV in the driveway if you have to....
13As a real estate consultant there is no way I would let my clients walk away from their dream home over 2 inches! As many people stated there are numerous ways to solve the problem without having to give up everything you want.
But let me put this into a little different perspective for you to help you see things differently. A house is most likely the biggest investment you will ever make in your life. Do you really want to sacrifice the "dream" home for a car which is constantly depreciating? And do you really want to give up the comfort and security of that new home for a car that won't bring you the memories that a house can?
No house is perfect, but it this one sounds as close as you can get to it. Buy it and you won't regret it.
14Pop I haven't heard yuppy in a long time! I'm with you I can't believe this is a problem. You have a driveway park in it!
15Buy the house , it makes no sense to give up a home you would love to live in for a car , which you probally wont have in a few years anyways.
16Buy the house. You can always get a slightly smaller SUV but a perfect house in a good neighborhood is hard to come by.
On a side note, for everyone saying "just park in the driveway," in some areas that's not an option. My fiance and I have been looking at houses recently as well and every single community we've looked at has had an HOA that does not allow you to park in the driveway. To get an existing home in an HOA-less community costs a fortune in this area so you're pretty much stuck with living with the ridiculous HOA rules.
