Comedian Al Franken, who is currently running for Senate in Minnesota, phoned in this weekend's opening skit on Saturday Night Live, according to NBC insiders.
Both SNL and the Franken campaign want to downplay Al's involvement. Allowing a liberal Democratic candidate to write a piece critical of John McCain could make the network look bias. And as for Franken, his campaign has spent a lot of time trying to contextualize his funny, yet risqué, past. The official story is that Franken, who hasn't worked on SNL for 13 years, called creator Lorne Michaels to chat about something else. The topic of McCain commercials came up, and Michaels went on to create a sketch after he hung up.
I often think candidates would do well if they used pieces of political comedy as their campaign commercials. For example, no one can articulate hypocrisy quite like Jon Stewart's Daily Show. Check out the alleged Franken sketch — should the campaign gladly take credit for it?

Who cares who wrote it? It is hilarious.
1It's hilarious and Franken's not just a random candidate, he made his name writing for SNL and has pitched in before.
2pretty damn funny.
3That was sooo funny!!!
4I'm kind of loving how Lorne Michaels and NBC have taken off the gloves...so they can more easily give the McCain campaign the finger.
5Wow! That was great!
6"Allowing a liberal Democratic candidate to write a piece critical of John McCain could make the network look bias."
That's pretty funny.
7This skit was pretty funny! Not as funny as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler doing Palin and Clinton, but still funny. My favorite is "Barack Obama says he wants universal heath care. Is that so? Health care for the ENTIRE universe? Including Osama Bin Laden?" Too funny!
8That skit cracks me up every time
I loved Bill Hader in it--his sarcastic voice is deadly!
9Oh, and the beginning of the skit, when he worries about his previously recordings being unusable because the tape spools might be worn out, and thinks "digitally recorded" means "with your fingers" or whatever--priceless.
10Hilarious!
