MTV may be on a "Green Crusade" but for one piece of Panama's rain forest, actions speak louder than words. After filming the latest Road Rules/Real World Challenge, MTV took trashy TV to a new level, turning part of a rain forest into a garbage dump.
MTV's green offenses include: clearing a large section of rain forest for the set, trashing a pristine beach, disturbing an off-limits bird sanctuary island, and leaving behind large amounts of trash and debris.
While one part of MTV pushes the importance of environmentalism, the network sends a different message on and off screen. Shows like My Super Sweet Sixteen, which glamorize big cars and excesses in contradiction to a green lifestyle, add to the somewhat hypocritical approach also demonstrated by the rain forest damage.
If MTV can't clean up its own mess, how will it motivate others to take care of the Earth, too?

MTV is part of a corporation. They will push what sells, be it the "green" fad or showing off excesses of wealth.
1They don't have a responsibility to really sway one way or the other. However they do have a responsibility to clean up their damn trash.
Damn they should have just put them up in a nice villa/hotel like they usually do.
2you know, i didn't even think about this while i was watching the show on MTV the other night. i think that with all the documentaries that they do in promoting ecological foundations and trying to make the environment better - you would think that they would be a bit more aware of what they are doing to the the rain forest and not destroy it or 'dirty' it like they have been. it's a shame that they are doing this and i hope that someone raises the red flag and makes a change since MTV is really a role model for what a lot of teens and younger adults believe and look to do.
3anyone who looks to MTV as a champion for anything other than making money needs to look again. they promote all the wrong things. they don't even promote musical artists... like, you know, they're supposed to because it's MUSIC tv? i cant even remember the last time i watched it.
4HYPOCRITES.
5I have been convinced for some time that Viacom is the root of all evil in the world.
6I am supposed to be surprised by all of this? I would liek to see what happens to the location of all those Survivor shows after they leave. Probably worst state....
7CYL, I was wondering that too, about Survivor. Somehow I think we might have heard about it if they did this kind of damage, but you never know.
8I hope so too Michelin..our poor Earth...this green movement should have started happening 10 years ago. *sigh*
9Of course they're hypocrites. Look at their programming versus their name
10You know, I'm not crazy about the green movement in general. A lot of things are done without really being thought through, and sometimes it is used as an excuse to violate people's rights. However, I think there are lots of things that can be done to help everybody that we need to think logically about. I like what Ron Paul said during the primaries about using property rights litigation to improve things like this. It seems like a fair, judicial way to get people moving in the right direction.
11MTV is getting some bad PR lately. Practice what you preach MTV!
12I don't know how it is in the US...but Europe seems to be doing a great job. Great examples. Canada is doing an ok job in my opinion but definitely not enough.
The Geography of Hope offers some great insight into what can be done sustainably (without harming the economy in the long run or violating rights).
13I am not surprised, MTV is blatantly pursuing the ruining of this generation whether its the air, youth or fashion.
14yy, ITA with your thoughts on this.
15This is sad, but not surprising. MTV is just like every other corporation.
16This is a disgrace. MTV should be ashamed of itself, but I doubt it is. They're teaching kids all the wrong values and they're smug about it, too. Ugh.
17All this damage for a show no one watches anymore... what a waste.
18MTV got caught in the middle of the great international greenwash where corporations will say anything to get you on board that they are green if it sells. Now with the greenwashing fading we will see what corporations stick to touting green ideas and even which ones practice what they preach. MTV obviously has not been one of the more conscience preachers.
19MTV blows.
20MTV has disappointed me for years, this doesn't surprise me. The grossest thing is all those wannabe actors they have on these "reality shows" who will end up being wastes of human space after their glory days on MTV are up.
21I certainly hope they are correcting their mistakes here!
22They need to clean their mess up pronto. And MTV shouldn't go to places if they are going to destroy it.
23"All this damage for a show no one watches anymore... what a waste."
24I really despise MTV.
