Another nugget of fallout from the financial crisis isn't just the prices on Lehman Brothers swag on eBay — it could be Obama's seemingly gleeful reaction to it, according McCain strategists. Steve Schmidt told reporters today that Obama is "cheerleading the crisis," and using it to his own political advantage, while McCain seeks a bipartisan solution to the money woes.

While Obama is "cheerleading" the financial crisis, Sarah Palin did some McCain cheerleading of her own at a joint town hall in Michigan last night. Jumping in to the proceedings, Palin said:
Okay. May I add something, because sometimes my running mate is a bit too humble. We need to remember who it was who pushed for and supported and risked much for the strategy that is working in Iraq, and that is the surge. He is the one who pushed for it.
Plus, I'm learning so much about culture today! McCain raps! Or R&Bs or something. I don't care what you call it, it's hilarity squared. Just watch. I promise it's worth it to read more.
Somehow I'm wishing this speech had actually been delivered like this. I might be sending the campaign a memo right now. . . "To whom it may concern: More dancing. Also, fur coat. Thank you."
Do you think Obama is "cheerleading" the crisis? How are McCain and Palin getting together on the trail? Does she have staying power, despite what Karl Rove says?

Oh please.. Obama has stayed steady with his message.. he hasn't become excitable over anything..people are actually mad at him for not getting more angry or wound up.. it is actually very Presidental of him to always keep his head. People seem to be confusing the news channels like MSNBC with Obama.
They are taking a topic that is important to people and addressing the issue.. look at the campaign trail and the 2min ad outlining the economic plan.
And the numbers actually seem to support a Democratic President over a Republican for which group the economy actually flourishes under.. http://www.slate.com/id/2199810/
McCain and Palin need to divert people from her lack of foreign policy experience and his lack of economic prowess and his increasing signs of early on set of Alzheimer's(IMO). Oh and their sudden determined lack of cooperation on troopergate.. bring it on turned into zero cooperation overnight. So distract, distract, distract...
1It's a new low to suggest Obama is 'cheerleading' the nation's financial crisis - but it's vintage McCain.
He's got nothing worthwhile to offer, so he'll call Obama's loyalty into question.
2Uh, "cheerleading the crisis"? Really? The economic crisis is a huge issue facing our nation right now, Obama believes he has the strategies to fix it, and he's taking the opportunity to point out how his policies would help with a problem we're having right now. That's not "cheerleading" a crisis, it's being smart and showing what he would do in contrast to his opponent.
Schmidt's comment strikes me as yet another whiny attempt at diversion.
3The economy has always been one of Obama's main focuses. He's just more prepared for this discussion than McCain since he's been talking about it longer.
4I haven't seen McCain offering much in the way of solutions to the current crisis besides flip-flopping on AIG, backpedaling on his "fundamentals of the economy are strong" remark, and slamming the Wall Street "fat cats" (his biggest donors, and a group to which Carly "$42 Million Golden Parachute" Fiorina belongs).
And I'm actually not criticizing him for flip-flopping; I can accept that as the manifestation of an adjustment of ideas based on current facts. What bothers me is the obvious subtext of the flip-flops: that he was wrong on these things before.
He's noted himself that the economy is not his strength. That's very clear now, and so it's not surprising that some of his supporters would try to divert attention from that at a time when the American people realize they need a president who is strong on the economy.
5What a weird video. I don't think I like the fur coat look on McCain.
Honestly, his comments about Obama don't surprise me at this point.
If McCain is willing to suggest that Obama wants to compromise national security to win an election, it's hardly noteworthy saying that he's cheerleading about the downturn to use it to his advantage. It's really disappointing to me.
6Wow...so this is what desperation looks like. Everyone who has been a Obama supporter or hasn't lived in a rock knows that all he's been talking about is the economy. While the MSM and the McCain campaign has been focused on Sarah Palin and lipsticks on pigs...Obama has always stayed on message throughout...whether it was focusing on education to the economy.
And if I was a cheerleader, I'd be offended. SEXIST comment from the McCain campaign. I KID!!!
7I want to hear one candidate say
"Our economy is effed up. WE need to fix it. If elected, I will work to resolve this crisis by whatever means necessary. It won't be comfortable, it won't be fun, and it will get worse before it gets better. But it must be done and I'm the man to do it."
If Barack said that, I'd vote for him. If McCain says it, my support of him goes off the meter.
Right now it's all rhetoric, smear campaigns and hearsay. I'm a McCain supporter, but I seriously doubt that Obama is "Cheerleading" the economic crisis. This is fear mongering at it's worst.
8Thank you for being a McCain supporter who can say that, Mykie.
9Mykie
Hillary used to say that.
10I think Mykie clearly illustrated the 'Change' we all want to see... and what we wanted wasn't business as usual. We've, for the most part, gotten away from rooting for the home team and saying okay...this isn't a game. This is my and my kids future.
If we aren't attacked....we are going to starve!

Check this out, Obama talking about his economic policy. Like it or not, at least he addresses the issue that is on everyone's mind directly. I'm tired of these high schoolesque put downs and fear mongering. We as an American people, republican democrat or independent, deserve better than that.
12Thanks, Mykie.
13Mesayme, you are so right.
This election is NOT about parties. This election is becoming the worst case of a smear campaign that we've ever seen.
Someone needs to stand up and say ENOUGH. We need what is absolutely BEST for this country! Forget democrat/republican. Forget Liberal/Conservative.
LOOK AT THE ISSUES. Study for yourself what the candidates are about. Don't listen to what McCain's camp says about Obama and likewise don't listen to what Obama's camp says about McCain. Don't listen to what celebrities tell you to do.
LISTEN TO YOURSELF. If your gut tells you that Obama is the best person to be running this country, and if you've studied the issues instead of just saying "I'm voting democrat because the republicans screwed everyone up" then you scare me. Read the platforms of the candidates. Study the issues. KNOW WHAT YOU'RE VOTING FOR. If you do that, even if your candidate didn't win, then you've done your job for this country and I applaud you.
Since we've lost Hillary, who really WOULD have been the absolute best candidate to run this country at this time, we have to choose from Obama and McCain.
Hillary was the one that said "I'll fix it whatever it takes" and that's why I liked her. That's why I would have voted for her.
14well of course Obamas side is going to take the economic woes and use them to thier advantage, thats politics
15mykie, you make some good points. obama did say "ENOUGH" at the DNC... and i believe he's made several allusions to the smear tactics mccain's been using (without playing the victim card, more just pointing out how ridiculous they are). i hear you about hillary... she was a great candidate. but just out of curiosity, what made you switch from dem to repub after she lost the primary?
16And you forgot to say it's BAD politics. LOL
17Look at all the dots!
18I feel like we're playing a game of Connect 4 on some of these posts
And I love it!
19Here's something to read for yourself that makes it clear McCain/Palin doesn't have anything to offer - Its from a townhall meeting (you know, the ones McCain does so well in):
"Give us some details and examples of your strategies and plan for economic empowerment for women,” she said.
McCain signaled for Palin to answer the question.
“Well first let me take a shot at that, and I’ll tell ya, I’m a product of Title IX in our schools, where equal education and equal opportunities in sports really helped propel me into the—I guess into the position that I’m in today where,” Palin said.
McCain then interjected, “Could I mention she was a point guard on a state championship basketball team.”
After the crowd’s applause died down, Palin continued: “Sports were very, very important to me growing up, you know just learning about self discipline and healthy competition and about what it takes to win and even how to graciously lose sometimes. But how to win, that’s what it teaches ya. Now, I was a product of Title IX where legislation allowed that equal opportunity. Now if we have to still keep going down that road to create more legislation, to get with it in the 21st century, to make sure that women do have equality especially in the work place, then we’re there because we understand that in this age we have all got to be working together. I respect you so much that you are a Democrat recognizing that John McCain and me as a team of mavericks understand where you’re coming from, and we can work together on these issues. But yup, equality for women, for all, that’s going to be part of the agenda and I thank you for that question.”
20isn't that what Obama did with every campaign speech so far and the new 2 min ad he released?

Oh.. and can someone tell McCain that a President cannot fire a SEC chairman? They can request that they resign but they have no authority to "fire" them.
McCain gaffes recently:
Thought the PM of Spain was a anit american leftist in Latin America
Rejects an AIG bail out on Monday..supports it Tuesday
the fundamentals of the economy were "strong"..one day later we are in "total crisis"
I don't know enough about the economy..its not my strong point to I know how to fix this country's economy I was a member of the Senate Commerce Committee.
Slams Wall Street Fat Cats who end up being his biggest donors..
Condemns golden parachutes then has Carly Fiorina as one of his top campaign officially then throws her under the bus..
The self professed Mr. Deregulation suddenly believes some regulation is in order?
During Town Hall on Palins Female Empowerment Posistion interjected she was point guard for her high school basketball team..
On and On..
Is McCain showing signs of dementia? Is he flip flopping? Or is he lying? What is the deal?
21Imabeliever, I've read a few things that suggest the Spain thing may have come about because he was confused over who Zapatero was, and was trying to cover it up. Which is anyway scary.
22I am voting for the Obama Biden ticket because I believe in them and their position on the issues.
In fact I would have voted for Biden as president..I have loved that guy for years!
23And nobody listens, the rhetoric and lies continue.
Ima, GOOD FOR YOU. THAT'S what a smart voter does!
24Ok, I have to say before I read all the comments that I wish McCain would wear a coat like in that video!!! LOL
I'm sure Palin has a few he could borrow.
Had to get that out.
25
26Not that the SEC is blameless (they aren't) but didn't the legislation (that Phil Gramm sponsored)take away the SEC/FTC oversight over certain finiancial investment schemes (credit swaps, subprimes, etc)? That is the deregulation the Republicans wanted and got right after Bush came to office and that is one of the main reasons these giants are in trouble now. McCain supported that bill.
Even scarier, Gramm is one of the authors of McCain's economic policy who only stepped down after he called the economic woes a "mental recession" and he is rumored to be a frontrunner for Sec of Treasury if McCain wins.
If the SEC has at least one hand tied behind their back how are they wholly responsible for this?
27ROFLOL at the video clip especially since Estelle (love her) isn't exactly a fan of (to put it nicely) of McCain, his running mate or policies. I wish you would have included the one with Obama's face photoshopped in also it's funny.
As for the McCain camp attempt to once again distract from the issues, no Obama isn't cheerleading. Obama and Biden are actually dealing with the crisis/issues instead talking about getting a commission together to come up with possible solutions to a problem that's obvious. His running mate is neither here nor there imo.
28PS - I meant to start with the fact that his solution today was to fire the SEC head
29LMAO, I love that video.
30Okay, I'm home from work and finally got to watch that video, and...
31I wouldn't say he's cheerleading it, but I have heard more than one Obama supporter say this will be good for his campaign which is so, so tacky.
32I just realized that McCain's statement basically implies that Obama is better than him on the economy.
33I have heard news sources say that in polls, Obama does better on the economy than McCain. I don't see how that is Obama fault, though.
I am just blown away by the fact that on Tuesday, Obama gave a speech that very clearly laid out big ideas on changes that need to be made to our financial market regulations, McCain STILL has no specifics on what he wants to do...and yet he is insulting Obama. He should be doing his homework instead. McCain's top economic advisor said the other day, "I don't think it's, at this moment, imperative to write down exactly what the plan has to be. Some standards we just have to aim for and we just haven't met".
Ummm...I think the American people deserve specifics!
34This "crisis" has been like a slow moving hurricane. It has been building for a while, economic experts knew it was on its way, and so for the McCain campaign to act like they are caught off guard is pretty amazing. Obama had a 6 point plan on market reform in MARCH!
That video is hilarious! If that is how McCain plans on giving his State of the Union
Addresses, I will totally change my vote. We need more rapping presidents.
35I loved the video!!!
McCain/Estelle '08!
36I wouldn't say he's cheerleading it, but I have heard more than one Obama supporter say this will be good for his campaign which is so, so tacky.
I remember when the whole Russia thing was happening just a week ago and everyone was focusing on National Security....I remember McCain "taking advantage" of it and people saying it would be good for his campaign. It's the same situation as the economic crisis. Should Obama not be on point about the economy because he might be "taking advantage" of the situation? This makes no sense to me.
37The video was prime!!
38The video was great!
39It looked hysterical the way he was tugging on his pants!!!
John McCain's detailed economic plan, with specifics, can be found here:
http://www.johnmccain.com/Issues/jobsforamerica/
40Thanks for posting that kim. Now some of the untruths posted by other members can be seen for what they are. Especially those saying that he isn't even discussing the economy.
41Anytime, GS. It was easy to find; he has all of his plans laid out on his website.
42lil, the problem is his naysayers won't even look at it. It's sad, because to educate yourself and really vote smart, you have to read the policies of BOTH sides. I have. I wish everyone would.
43I know a lot of people won't look at it, but I figured it was worth posting, anyway.
And I also really wish people would look at both sides. It really seems like you've put a lot of thought into who you're voting for, mykie. I definitely admire that.
44lil, maybe if you just copy past all the information into the thread they will read it.
45paste of course
46Thanks Lil. I encourage EVERYONE to educate themselves. Even if in the end they vote for Obama, it's OK, as long as they truly know what they're voting for and not just the rhetoric that the news media is feeding them.
47I needed to come in once more and watch the video.
