If I were a smoker and a complete stranger approached me on the street, ASSUMING I wanted to quit, I'd pop 'em in the nose!
1I'd be pretty annoyed, too, Amy
2Who the hell do they think they are? Are they going to go up to people eating donuts and cheeseburgers and give them weight watcher's info? Are they going to go into bars and hand out AA info? To each their freakin' own. Sheesh. This kind of thing really really really pisses me off.
3And as far as Obama is concerned, aren't we just being "typical white" people?
4I agree gs. Well....with your first statement I mean...and I am not a smoker and never have been.
5Since he said typical white people - is he also typical since he is half white.
6I'm so confused how the world elitism came up during this election - baffling. The race article, makes me say mmmm.
7This really frustrates me. Smokers have been severely targeted by the government's 'stop smoking' schemes lately so they are well aware of the consequences by now. There is only so much the government can do, and they've pretty much done everything else besides making it illegal. Now it's time for them to sit back, stop interfering and let those who still wish to smoke, do so.
8I never get the elitist thing, either. Both candidates are Senators, not exactly your average Joe. Obama went to Harvard, but McCain has a lot more money. On the other hand, Obama was raised by a single mom, but McCain is from a military family. They both come from a "mixed" background, imho, because both are ordinary in some ways and extraordinary in some ways.
9I'm with those that said they'd "Pop 'em in the nose" if they approached me. It's one thing if I'm blowing smoke in your face, but if I'm in a designated smoking area by myself and someone approaches me, I'm going to let THEM know that it's hazardous to THEIR health to do so!
10I am a smoker who is currently working on quitting, and if someone did that I would be so annoyed. Seriously. That's just harassment.
11That is annoying! And you know what? I would tell them that I was thinking about quitting until they approached me and now I'm going to up my smokes by a pack a day!
BITE ME!
12I'd probably take a loooooooooooong drag and blow the smoke in their face. And then run like hell!
13I would be extremely annoyed if one of those people came up to me. I know what I'm doing, thanks very much, and I'll quit when I'm ready.
14I'm wondering if they're expecting someone to say....OH MY GOD WHAT?!?!?!?! These things might KILL me?!?!?
15that's like the people who come up to me asking if i want to be saved.
what i do with my life/body is no one's concern but MINE.
geez, such nerve.
i had a lady come up to me while i was smoking asking if i enjoy giving money to big corporations and then she walked into a wendy's.
16damn hypocrites
I wouldn't say anything to smokers but the kids and I definitely hold our noses when they smoke right in front of or very near entrances we need to walk through...when you don't smoke it is very overwhelming...but tell someone to quit. no...it's not my body.
17I think visibly holding your nose is just as rude and teaching your kids to do it is asking for trouble. They could piss off the wrong smoker. You can hold your breath without holding your nose.
18"i had a lady come up to me while i was smoking asking if i enjoy giving money to big corporations and then she walked into a wendy's.
damn hypocrites"
that made me giggle.
19I don't give a crap how it looks or if it's rude, my kid has allergies. I won't tolerate violence to have cancer smoke in my face. Especially my children's face. It's indignant to smoke right in a doorway. What entitlement do you have because you have a habit that affects others?
20I'll just have my kids wipe bugars on them then... Ya might just piss off the wrong mother.
I'm not the one with the addiction, I can do whatever I deem necessary.
Most people move away from a door...it's the nasty 'deal with it people' who are in generally rude period...
21"I think visibly holding your nose is just as rude and teaching your kids to do it is asking for trouble."
Yeah, totally.
I can't speak for any other smokers (and it sounds like there aren't that many on here), but when I'm in public, I'm super considerate. I always move away voluntarily from other people if they approach when I'm smoking, I never smoke around other people (especially kids), and I actually always feel really bad and self-conscious even when outside alone, smoking. Not all smokers are a$$holes who run around blowing smoke in people's faces.
22I HATE SMOKING - good!
Unfortunately -- the smoke travels and I'm highly sensitive to it. I'd wish they put something in cigarettes so they don't activate allergy like symptoms.
23and cats, and trees, and flowers and dust.....
24you don't live in the south Jude, smoking a$$hole capital of the world... they don't budge. I'll pinch and fan and whatever else I can to get it away from my kids and not to mention my HAIR!!!!
Yeah, that damn nature...so rude, for just being there.
25I live in the south and don't see what you are talking about for the most part.
26I lived in the South for several years, and I don't have any statistics, but it seemed like everyone smoked! It definitely seemed like a huge part of the culture, and I found myself feeling left out sometimes because it was such a social thing and it seemed like I was one of the few non-smokers.
If there are a lot more smokers in an area, it seems like just math would tell you there would be more rude smokers. I'm sure it varies between states and even regions within states, though.
27I used to smoke regularly (still smoke, like, once in a blue moon) and I'm super considerate, but I always think people in Chicago are awful when it comes to being the same way. People light up in revolving doors, stand right in doorways and do it, sometimes smoke on train platforms even though there are 'no smoking' signs...and this is coming from someone who can tolerate smoke. A little consideration goes a long way, but that campaign sounds like a bad idea.
28But em, in Chicago you are not suppose to smoke in from of doorways. It's a city ordnance.
I love it when people smoke at the bus stop in the bus shelter while others are standing there.
29I can't think of a single place anymore where it isn't a city ordinance not to smoke in doorways. Even tiny towns have passed that.
30Ew, bella, that is so rude.
31But isn't it still legal to have smoking in some bars and restaurants? That would be funny if you could smoke inside but not by the door. LOL!
32(I mean, they are rude for smoking in doorways, not that you are rude of course!)
33No, Vespa. Here there is no smoking inside and you must be I think 25 ft from the doorway or risk a fine.
34Oh, sorry. I didn't mean in Chicago. I meant in other cities or states.
35*I dont tell people who smoke to stop, But i let it be known amoungst my friends and family that if they do they better take it far far away from me.
*If the Rothschilds are for McCain? he will win.
36CG - And you absolutely should! I'm a smoker, and even when driving my OWN car, if I have a friend with me that's a non-smoker I DON'T SMOKE. Just because I want a cig is no reason for me to jeopardize someone else.
37see mykie your a nice person! I love it when smokers ask me before they do light up, its the polite thing to do.
38it's good to know some smokers care about the people and children who don't want to jeopardize their health; you've restored my faith...in some. As usual, it's assumed that if you don't know any better it must not be so...I live in the highest tobacco yielding state...what does that tell you about getting smoke-friendly laws passed. And I've never told a sole not to smoke other than a good friend when we were 15 (who has passed;asthma related) and my father who had a heart attack.
39It's just insensitive to subject other people.
If you are referring to me, I am not a smoker. I am pregnant right now. If I walk by a smoker I simply pick up the pace and hold my breath. Easy as that.
40That reminds me, GS. I make a huge point of not lighting up if there are pregnant women around, and if I see one coming, I put it out or go somewhere else. Just seems like common courtesy.
41That's awesome Jude. But I am not anti smoker. I know there are some places I can go that will be smoke filled so I avoid them. As far as outside in public, they have just as much right to be there as I do. I won't sit right next to them, but they have the right.
42I like the way you look at it, GS
I wish more people had that perspective!
43Y'all always forget, I'm libertarian for the most part. I just want to be left alone and to leave others alone!
44I definitely agree with the leaving me alone part...it would be nice to give an opinion in peace as well.
45You've had soldiers or terrorists in your house?
46Now I'm lost.
47Jude, you may be lost but not alone... lmao....
48Okay, I totally misunderstood what you said about peace! My bad!
I swear, I just need to go back to bed today. My brain just isn't working!
