In an effort to clean up the neighborhood, the city government of Petah Tikva, Israel has created a dog-DNA database. In exchange for registering their pooches' DNA with the city vet, residents will be eligible for pet-food coupons and dog toys if they place doggie doo-doo in marked bins. But — if a pooch's poop is found on the street, the registered owner will get a ticket.
Officials say not only will this reduce the number of "land mines" around the city, but it could allow vets to research genetic disease in dogs and help the pound ID strays. Should city governments go further and require pet owners to register doggie DNA, or would this be legislating good manners?

I think it's good to have it in order to identify the stray dogs, but catching people that don't pick up their dog poo is kinda extreme.
4If i see any owner not picking up thier dogs doody I pick it up for them and leave it right outside thier doors, they dont know its me, I am kinda like a tommy knocker but with poo. A poo knocker.
5I do hate seeing piles of poo on the sidewalk, but legislating DNA sampling seems a bit extreme.

10I get really annoyed with the "it's poo, poo degrades, who cares?" mentality. We have a bunch of dog parks where I live and they're actually shutting them down because people aren't picking up their dog poo. The city has to clean up all the messes that people are too careless to pick up themselves.
Not to mention that dog poo is basically furthering the life cycle of numerous parasites. Which people can then become infected with. Ick. Pick up your dog poo!

12I have a dog and hate when people leave their dogs droppings on the street and in other peoples yards. However we are talking about Israel here and aren't there better things do be doing in that "country" other than regulating dog poop. PRIORITES!

14Because it's disputed not by me personally but by a large population of the world. Just like I typically put "America" in quotes because that implies we are taking about the U.S.A although South America could be called "America" too. Hope your curiousity is fulfilled.

16Interesting...I certainly know of legitimate groups who dispute Israel's borders, but not its existence as a sovereign nation. I guess I will have to look into that more.
17I don't have a problem with it as long as it's voluntary. It seems like a good idea to offer incentives since it's a public health issue.
18I try to say "the U.S." instead of "America" too! It's more accurate,and I think it just sounds more educated. Calling our country "America" always males me think of politicians giving speeches.

24I've been to Petah Tikva a couple of times, and I never noticed a dog poo problem. This town is a middle-class bedroom community, certainly much cleaner than Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. There are definitely better ways to spend the money.
25i think that it's certainly an interesting and new approach to things. i'm sure that there are a lot of people who would be willing to register their dog's DNA for benefits like coupons and toys for their pup - and hopefully it will result in fewer messes on the street. i wonder where the $$ to pay for the testing will come from since DNA testing isn't cheap and well..there are a LOT of dogs out there.
26I hate dog sh*t on sidewalks. There is a reason I NEVER look up when I'm walking through the city.
Paris is the worst I have ever seen. It was disgusting - all over the place. These little motorbikes would come along and vaccuum it up.
BTW, I agree that doesn't look like normal dog sh*t. I would start testing the DNA of any sh*t I saw on the street that looked like that...

29Its an interesting idea, especially with providing an incentive to the pet owners to register their animals. I find it to be a creative solution to helping resolve something that could become a public health issue. Any step to help clean up a neighborhood is a good idea personally. However, I feel bad for the poor individuals stuck on "clean up duty". At least they are getting paid-- or perhaps they could make those needing to complete community service as a part of their sentence take care of the matter. Pardon my language, but its a $h*tty job, but someone has to do it, right? If the government if creative with its resources, and it helps resolve the problem, I don't thinks its a bad idea!
30This just says nanny state to me. They would ticket you for poop? And what happens if you don't pay your poop tickets? Do you not get your license renewed? Your street parking permit? Your dog can't renew his license because he hasn't paid his poop tickets? LOL.
Maybe they'll even issue a warrant for your arrest for too many unpaid poop tickets.
31I think this is a great, albeit creepy, idea.
I never understand why people don't pick up their sh*t! Pardon my french, but you would never go for a walk , drop down your pants and take a dump and walk away... so WHY do you let your dog, who YOU are responsible for, do it and not clean up. It makes me so mad when I go for my jogs and see sh*t all over the sidewalks! Again, sorry for the language but it just irks me to no end.
32At this point it is voluntary so I don't see a problem with it. But I also know that people that let their dogs poo without picking it up aren't likely to register. I'd have no problem with them making it mandatory here because I do think we need to legislate some good manners sometimes.
