Sarah Palin echoed John McCain's tough talk toward Russia, when she told Charlie Gibson that she favors putting Georgia in NATO, even though membership would mean the possibility of war with Russia. Last month, McCain said: "I would move forward at the right time with the application for membership in NATO by Georgia. As you know, through the NATO membership, that if a member nation is attacked, it is viewed as an attack on all."
Obama also called for partnership between NATO and Georgia in August: "I have consistently called for deepening relations between Georgia and transatlantic institutions, including a membership action plan (MAP) for NATO, and we must continue to press for that deeper relationship." Membership in NATO's MAP can last for decades, and before full membership in NATO is awarded, territorial disputes with Russia would have to be worked out. This Summer, NATO deferred even MAP membership for Georgia.
Thinking about how a candidate's casual comment on the possibility of war with Russia plays out in Russia or other countries makes me a little nervous, but then again everyone in the race seems to have Georgia and a NATO relationship on their minds.

We would be involved in armed conflict with Russia in year one of McPalin presidency.
1NO!
2All I know is that we can't afford to be involved in another "Operation whatever".
3Bringing Georgia into NATO now has too much to do with controlling a pipeline and flipping off Moscow. It's been independent since 1991 and needs to resolve its secessionist problems before joining NATO.
4I think Georgia thinks it would resolve its issues BY joining NATO.
5By making them NATO's issue?
6Georgia's relations with NATO can kinda be cleared up here:
7http://www.nato.int/issues/nato-georgia/evolution.html
We are SO gonna be involved if Palin and McCain have anything to do about it.
8From this, it looks as if NATO wants things sorted out first too.
9Yes! Yes. I think so, yes!
10NO GOD PLEASE!!! This would be a horrible idea for us to do. I don't agree with wanting to bring them into NATO. Russia is VERY powerful and we're already pissing them off with the whole weapons thing going on. omg this would be BAD
11No -- a thousand times no!!!! Did you see that video on the CNN website of what Russians think of Palin -- it's eye opening. Obviously they don't think it's a good idea either. Russian is a super power like the US and I think it would be a suicide mission to go to war with them.
12Is Russia really as powerful as it once was? I had heard that they didn't even have enough money to pay their soldiers. Granted that was about a year ago, but it still makes me wonder.
13I think we are as powerful as we once were either. I really don't think we need to take chances with this.
14I know, I agree, but I wonder how much of it is bluffing and how much is truth. Believe me, I think Palin is delusional and getting involved is insane but I wasn't sure what the current status of Russia's military was. Something that has stuck with me is an ep of "20/20" with Chris Como when he was let into a bio weapons plant in Russia near the Cheque border. It was a HUGE deal that they let him bring a camera in and anyhow, they reported that the guards (soldiers) weren't getting paid because they didn't have the money. Did anyone ever see that particular episode? It scared the hell out of me. This plant was supposed to get destroyed by an agreement with the US, but Regan nixed the project and it never happened.
15Good for you GirlA. Always question things and form your own opinion!
16How about we let Georgia join and American can get the hell out of NATO.
17That's not a bad idea, Michelin!
18Ahh I joined the club!
I know embarrassingly little about NATO, when I really think about it, but my understanding of the recent Georgian problems has been that Georgia is instigating some border problems, and Russia, being Russia, responded with force that was probably 100x what they should have. I know I am oversimplifying things, and trust me, I want us to support any country that is getting crushed by a bigger, stronger one, but why would we even consider making Russia angrier? I mean, I don't even think it's an issue of being intimidated by Russia, it's just that we have bigger fish to fry, no?
19Im getting really confused by all the red 'Liberal" dots lol
20I keep thinking its the same person posting repeatedly
Yeah, they're kind of annoying. But we're putting up a united front.
21Liberal to the core baby
22I do not feel it would be in the worlds best interest to induct Georgia into NATO. We've already seen Russia's response to lining up missiles along their boarder. They've set up air bases in Venezuela. We have to ask ourselves what will Russia's response be to accepting Georgia into NATO? We've tit and Russia has tat. Are we going to continue the game until we are buried deep in a Cold War II.
In regards to the situation with Russia, Georgia and South Ossetia the Russians have cooperated with the world community in resolving the matter. They've met with Sec. of State Rice and agreed to a U.N. peace keeper arrangement. This is not the stance of a country that is unwilling to cooperate. We need to recognize that and show an equal interest diplomatic cooperation not take actions which will agitate the process as NATO did with the missile deployment.
In this presidential campaign people have been harping about experience experience experience. As I've said in another post experience doesn't mean twat if you don't have a good plan. We need to elect a President who has a plan other than aggression and escalation.
23Nuclear War 2009? If McCain gets in!
I am very disturbed as to why McCain would allow a statement about a possible war with Russia to be made by his running mate? If you did not hear Palin's interview, she stated that she favors allowing Georgia into NATO and then went on to say that a war with Russia is a "perhaps" reality. This is truly scary. When I saw this portion of the interview I literally broke out in a cold sweat.
Especially considering the following info from Wikipedia.
"Russia possesses the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction in the world. Russia declared an arsenal of 40,000 tons of chemical weapons in 1997 and is said to have had around 6681 nuclear weapons stockpiled in 2005, making its stockpile the largest in the world. The Soviet Union ratified the Geneva Protocol on January 22, 1975 with reservations. The reservations were later dropped on January 18, 2001."
Putin(Russian Pres.) has already stated that he believes U.S. citizens were on the ground with Georgian troops when in South Ossetia. He also said he believes the attacks were made to help a certain candidate in the U.S. Presidential campaign win?
I don't hear Obama/Biden threatening RUSSIA! I have never thought that a nuclear attack would happen in the U.S. but I am not sure anymore.
Please vote Obama/Biden for President we need a more Diplomatic administration.
24The Following Quote i from Paul Craig Roberts Blog.

That's right....a former Ronald Reagan Appointee! Google him to read all his blogs. Be warned they frightening.
"Russia has made no threats against America. The post-Soviet Russian government has sought to cooperate with the US and Europe. Russia has made it clear over and over that it is prepared to obey international law and treaties. It is the Americans who have thrown international law and treaties into the trash can, not the Russians.
In order to keep the billions of dollars in profits flowing to its contributors in the US military-security complex, the Bush Regime has rekindled the cold war. As American living standards decline and the prospects for university graduates deteriorate, "our" leaders in Washington commit us to a hundred years of war.
If you desire to be poor, oppressed, and eventually vaporized in a nuclear war, vote Republican."
25"If you desire to be poor, oppressed, and eventually vaporized in a nuclear war, vote Republican."
26definitely worth repeating.
Definitely worth making into a bumper sticker. Everybody loves a bumper sticker slogan.
27Except that there's little to no truth in that statement Steph.
Who's using fearmongering tactics now?
28I don't know if it is catchy enough for a bumper sticker.
29I like bumper stickers with a little more originality. If I see one more "If you're not completely appalled, then you haven't been paying attention", I'm going to lose it.
30Like my bumper sticker?
31After watching Palin's interview with Gibson, I was speechless. The cavalier way she said "perhaps so charlie" to his q. about defending Ukraine and Georgia vs Russia. This woman is crasier than I thought. She must think Russia is Iraq & Putin is Sadam. Does she know how many nuclaear weapons both US and Russia has pointed at each other to go off at any time.? It'll be a nuclear holocust.
Do you think it's a coincidence that Saakashvilli's washington Lobbyist is also part of McCain's campain. a few days before Gorgia invaded S. Ossetia in the middle of the night Carl Rove was having lunch with Sakashvilli. Yes people 2+2 does equal four. It seems Putin knows it too. Bush has done everything he could to antagonize Russia paving the way for his fellow warmongers McCain/Palin. The military industrial complex gets billions of tax dollars a year in contracts people. Lots of money to be made. Unfortunately for them Russia is not ANOTHER WEAK COUNTRY so they may not be alive to enjoy their blood money when it's all said and done.
32well according to BBC, NATO backs Georgia... so you guys - SURPRISE, it's not just McCain.

33World War 3? Only if Obama Salama gets in!
Lets face it girls, Obama may be a great public speaker (he has all of you fooled) and author, however, he truly knows NOTHING about politics!
