In controversial news, a 22-year-old woman is making headlines everywhere by offering her virginity to the highest bidder in the hopes of earning money for grad school. Commenting on the scandal this is causing, an article in Reuters notes that many who've weighed in on this strange scenario think it's just a desperate attempt at fame, while others consider such an act synonymous with prostitution. The woman offered her own insight:
I don't think auctioning my virginity will solve all my problems but it will create some financial stability. I'm ready for the controversy, I know it will come along. I'm ready to do this . . . We live in a capitalist society. Why shouldn't I be allowed to capitalize on my virginity?
I'll be honest, I find the notion of selling your virginity for anything, including higher education, extremely disconcerting. And while I advocate that women be both proud and in control of their sexuality, this seems like another thing entirely.
Regardless of whether it is or isn't prostitution or a try at fame, it troubles me to think that a woman would consciously put herself in this position. What do you think of this endeavor? Is capitalizing on our virginity akin to using our good looks to get ahead? Are there ways in which you use your sexuality as a tool to get what you need or want?

Fame wh*re.
1Slutty, slutty, slutty. There are so many people working their ass of to pay for grad school, and they're not having sex for money. This girl wants attention more than money. Enuff said.
And to answer Dear's question; no, I think consciously using your sexuality to get ahead in life is a morbid form of feminism, if not a light form of prostitution.
2I wish i could have gotten some money, made the whole thing worth my time.
3yea....what happens when the guy who buys her is nothing put a crack smoking, fat bellied bald dude with STD's out the ass?
4ew gross...isn't that like a geshia or something???
anwyays, I don't think it's right!
5I don't think that this girl realizes what she's getting into. It might sound like a good idea at the time but what's going to happen years down the line? Now days it's hard enough to find a nice guy when you are ready to settle down. What normal guy is going to want to be with someone that would do something like this. And the way our world is now, just about every person that meets someone new googles them or searches the person somehow.
Also I don't know what kind of career she's looking to pursue, but a very high majority of employers also use internet searches as a tool when looking into a person of interest for a job. Now that she not only has put herself on e-bay as selling her virginity, but made national news because of it..........this will probably haunt her for the rest of her life.
6disgusting.
7...just wrong..isn't this prostitution?
8dude..... virgin porn has been around forever! she's not the first one to sell her virginity, geez!
9She is adding to the notion that a woman's virginity is precious and priceless. But whatever =it is also a personal choice and if she wants to advertise herself like this on the internet- it's her life.
10Ewwww. You know the highest bidder is going to be the creepiest guy in the world.
11Is she in the US? This is, legally, prostitution. She can be arrested for this.
That's disgusting. I need money, but I can't imagine selling my body for it.
12Think about this.
She's being very open that she's selling her sexuality right?
What are shows like the bachelor/bachelorette doing? It's the same thing! They don't advertise that there's sex involved, but any adult knows there is. I mean come on. LOL I'm not THAT naive.
This girl is just being honest about what she's doing. It's not right, but she said that she won't necessarily take the highest bidder, and that she had final say on who the guy was. It sounds to me more like she's looking for someone that MIGHT turn out to be a long term boyfriend. But any way you slice it, it's still her body and whether the rest of the world agrees with it or not, it's really not for us to tell her to do it or not to do it. Just like it's not for us to tell someone whether or not they should have an abortion.
NONE of us have lived her life or walked in her shoes.
13Chaton, it really depends on the state. In most of Nevada she can do it legally. I'm sure there are restrictions on it, but I don't know them.
14I don't think it's that big of a deal. It's her body. She is old enough to do whatever she wants with it. Believe me, people have done far worse things than trading sex for money for school. Maybe we should look at the undercover issue if we are so disconcerted. How depressing that college is so expensive in this country that someone has to do that to pay for it.
15Am I the only one who feels sorry for her? Has education become so expensive that it can push people to such an extent? I mean I know there are other ways, but still. Wow.
16Yeah, I don't think there's any question about the fact that it is prostitution. Having sex in exchange for money is the definition of prostitution. Whether it's legal or not - as Michelin points out, that depends on where she is and where the transaction takes place, I would assume. And regarding whether it SHOULD be legal or not - well, I honestly have mixed feelings on that issue. She has to be seeking attention in addition to money or she wouldn't have been so...public. All I can really think is, boy - her parents must be really proud...
17Mich, isn't she selling it online? It's OK if she's doing it from NV, but if the bidder is from outside of NV, or in Clark County, it's illegal for him (I'm going to be pretty blatantly sexist and assume the majority of bidders will be male) to bid on it. It just seems like it's more than likely the very definition of prostitution, and there's more than a 99% chance she doesn't live in NV. I (totally my own opinion, I don't want this to become a debate, I have to go to work in 20 min,) personally think prostitution should be legalized and regulated, as it is in some European countries, but the fact is that it's illegal.
18Well, I think that prostitution should be legal, so it doesn't bother me. Wouldn't do it myself, but if she wants to, fine.
19How does she prove she's not a virgin, does she show the winner a letter from her doctor or something? What if she's like many other girls whose hymens were broken before they even lost their virginity (from sports, high impact activity, tampons, masturbating etc etc). I just wonder what the logistics of this would be. Would the guy be allowed to kiss her? Does that cost extra?
Of course it's essentially prostitution but it's pretty interesting and I don't judge the girl. It's no less scandalous or shocking than girls who become escorts or strippers or whatever else to put themselves through college.
20I really hope she doesn't go through with it. I'm sure she will regret it in the future. It's sad. I wouldn't call her a wh*re or a prostitute, even if she technically is one. I think she is just ignorant of the emotional impact it's going to have on her, if not now then later in her life.
21She's prostituting herself to the highest bidder.Wow what a genius she is. I can't think of anything more degrading.
Maybe she ought to try getting herself a fricken job and some therapy instead.
22The auction isn't even on eBay ... it's out of the Moonlite Bunny Ranch brothel in NV ... where her SISTER is working to pay off her college debts.
WTF????????
23It's disgusting that she claims it's empowering. This is such a step back and just insulting for women in general.
24Ugh, this chick doesn't respect herself, but worse, she's making a mockery of the sex trade in which women are suffering every single day. Disgusting.
25Her actions reinforce the primitive notion that a woman's virginity is of great value in itself. That's distressing.
26If attention and publicity is what she's looking for, Hustler might give her a call, but don't expect Hef to come knocking. He doesn't even have porn stars on his mag.
27WTF????? She already has a bachelors degree in womens studies. She's trying to further her education by going for her masters degree in - get this - MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPY!!!
What a waste of oxygen! I'm officially disgusted!
28she isnt there under her real name, so technically no future boyfriend, or employer can find out that she is the one who has done this. but yea.. kinda dumb and a HORRIBLE way to lose your virginity
29it's HER virginity, she should be allowed to do whatever she wants to do with it, whether it's keeping it to herself or losing it to whomever she wants in whichever way she wants to.
I personally doubt I'd do this, but you can't blame the girl.
It's her choice and she's not really hurting anybody. A lot of people sell themselves or rely on their physical attributes in order to get what they want (a free pass at a club? a free drink? a job? a person they're interested in?)... think models, or waitresses using their charms and flirting to get promoted or get higher tips from the clients. Come on, don't be so uptight and cynical! You know most of us have been guilty of doing this in some way or another, in a higher or lesser degree, let's not fool ourselves.
And the saddest thing is, education should be free precisely to prevent things like this from happening.
30it's not synonymous with using your looks to get ahead. it's synonymous with being a prostitute or an escort
god, she's probably not even good looking, and she's probably not even a virgin. who can prove it?
and what kind of guy is going to bid on this too! gross!
31I've got to defend this girl, not because I agree with what she's doing, but because I DO agree that it's her business and not mine.
1. Are you all aware that she's doing this because her and her sisters stepfather squandered the money their mother had put away for them for college?
2. Are you aware that she put a clause in the auction that gives her final approval over the guy? This means (And she said this) that it probably won't be the highest bidder. She said she wants to feel SOME sort of attraction and he has to be clean and tested.
3. Are you aware that she has agreed to go through testing to verify her virginity?
4. Are you aware that she herself is undergoing a battery of tests to prove she is free from disease?
Now, NONE of this makes a difference to the right/wrong of it. I just think that maybe not everyone has the whole picture. I've been reading about this story since last Wednesday and at first I was disgusted. But then I thought about all of these reality "dating" shows. Most of those shows are doing EXACTLY what she's doing, but not 'honestly' in that they don't come right out and say "Yeah, we're getting these two people together so they can have sex." But in essence that IS exactly what they're doing.
Shows like Temptation Island
Blind Date
Rock of Love
Tila Tequila
Do I need to go on?
32Random aside: Every time Tila Tequila is mentioned, another case of crabs is diagnosed.
33
Jude!!
34I agree that this is really no one's business but her's, and whoever bids I guess. Really I don't agree or disagree, I don't really care and I don't think it's a big deal at all.
I wouldn't do it, but no one but her should get to decide what to do with her body, and if there are guys out there willing to pay for it, then more power to her as long as everyone involved doesn't get hurt, emotionally or physically.
And I agree with people saying that the real problem is the price of school. Wow...school is so expensive we have people resorting to things like this to get money, something is wrong there.
35Hahahhaha, ROFL at Jude too!
36I like this debate that is going on...its intresting and healthy to see how different people have different views about whether its her business...or whether its really empowerment...and the price of school.
Yay for healthy debates on Dear Sugar!
37If she's an adult and she wants to make a contract with another adult, it's none of my business.
I think people have sex for all kinds of bad reasons. At least in her case, it will lead to something positive.
38CYL, I like it too because people are debating like adults and not calling each other names
(You tool!)
39O M G JUDE! I just read your comment. Sad thing is, you're probably right! LMAO
40as hard as life is...i dont think anyone has an excuse to sell themselves for sex.
41and i also wonder...isnt this illegal prostitution?
Remember, it is HER body ... any consequences will impact only her ... no other victim.
Is this worse than the millions of "normal", "moral" women out there who make men pay for kids not theirs for 18+ years?
I think not.
42I'm sorry but....... i would do the same thing. Higher education is EXPENSIVE and needed to attain a dream job. Mind your busineess ppl.. its her life
43I personally wouldn't do this myself, but it's her body, not mine.
44It's her life, and if she needs an education, she can just sell her virginity. But it would be a horrible memory of losing your virginity...
45I actually don't feel the least bit sorry for her.
Should I feel sorry for guys who can't afford an education because there isn't much work as male prostitutes? Yeah...
This is degrading to women in so many ways...
46My only fear is can she handle me??????? oh!!! she got it coming!!!
47Yawn. How many people have done this now? Is there anybody left in the World who wants to sleep with a virgin and PAY to do it.
I don't like virgins... ;p
48Yeah, who wants to sleep with a virgin? First times suck anyway.
I know it's not my business, but it's kind of hard not to have an opinion when she's broadcasting her business ventures.
I guess I shouldn't feel bitter about it. I mean, we all have a choice, right?
49She's such a liar! All schools provide loans. She's just selling her unverifiable virginity for attention. Pretty pathetic.
