Whatever the reason you initially started the pill, the decision was probably a pretty significant and personal one. Some women I know have been on the pill since high school, while others only tried it out recently. What about you? When did you first start taking the pill?

I need to probably get on it. My mom and aunt keep on me about getting it. My boy thinks it would be safer.
1I started having sex when I was 21 but started with the patch first, I switched to the pill very shortly after..almost for 3 years now
2I was 19 when I went on birth control and that was w/the pill. Then I went on the patch, but that was just irritating and now I'm on Seasonale. I didn't realize I've been on birth control for 7 years.
3I was in college, and used it as an extra precaution. But I sucked at remembering to take it. I'm terrible about scheduling. Which is why I love the Ring. Stick and forget it.
4I was in college when I first started taking it, and I wasn't sexually active at the time. I started taking it to regulate my cycle.
528 years and still never been on it.
6I was 16
My mom said she didn't want NO babies and knew that things happen, so she put me on it!
7Never wanted to do the pill thing when I was younger bc I was afraid of weight gain..then I had my first child and well decided maybe it wouldnt be such a bad idea..did the pill for 6 months..in which I gained a whole lot of weight (I was right!) and switched to Depo-Provera. So I guess I started using at 21-ish?
8I was 18 and heading off to college. Just thought the two would be a good match. LMAO
923years old
10After my current boyfriend and I decided to become exclusive, we both got HIV tests and I went on the pill. Before that, we'd been using condoms.
1118 and still going strong.
12Since I was 18 and I'm still on it but I've switched my brand twice.
13I went on Yaz for horrible cramping and really long, heavy flow last February.
1417! I didn't want to tell my parents, so my boyfriend at the time and I took turns paying for it each month. Those little guys can be expensive when not covered by insurance!
1517, too. Meggy, I think it's awesome that your boyfriend at the gime split the BC cost ... even though the woman takes it, protection is a responsibility that BOTH partners share!
1616. Many different brands since then.
17i was 17 and my now mother in law took me to planned parenthood, paid for the visit and the first 3 months of pills.
18Right after my ex bf and I broke up. I got on it because I have pretty bad mood swing and break outs. Still using other protections for STDs...
19when I moved out of the house to go to school and could go to the school clinic without my parent's looking over my shoulder. my skin cleared up a lot after that, I remember my dad commenting on it once and asking what I changed. I said I switched skin care products q:
20Immediately after the first time I had sex and was paranoid of getting pregnant, so 17!
2117, summer before senior year of high school. there have been periods of time when I have been single and/or totally not doing it but I would never get off it because I can literally time everything to the exact hour every month.
22Never, because I don't like the risks. My cousin had a blood clot after she was on it for 2 years. That was enough to convince me.
23I started taking it when I was 22, two years ago. I just told my mom it was for irregularity, which was sort of true but also I wanted more protection. I started on Yasmin, which caused horrible mood swings, so I switched to the generic version of Ortho Tricyclen. Haven't experienced any side effects so far.
24uhh around 16 or 17 i can't remember
25rockn, that's what sex will do to ya, fry yo brain. LMAO
I'M TEASING PEOPLE. LOL C'mon, it was funny!
26Has anyone tried the Yaz pill, and if so, does it really help to reduce all those PMS symptoms? I really want to get on that if it helps. I first was on the pill around age 18.
27lol mykie7
2816 or 17, I can't remember.
29Austerity: Yes, it helps me tremendously. I have a sex drive, I haven't gained weight (I lost some, but I also was dieting, but I didn't have a problem losing weight). My face is clear now, I don't go postal on my husband randomly anymore and then go to him in apologetic tears. It also helped me with my insane period. It worked for me! Downside is they are $56 dollars without insurance...bummer.
3021. I was so easy - went on OrthoTricyclen Lo, it worked well, and haven't really had any problems with it since!
31I was 25 and had my first serious boyfriend, decided to get on the pill because I'd been thinking about it anyway (I have terrible cramps/ PMS). I didn't like that pill so with the next serious guy I went on NuvaRing, which is awesome. Off it now (I'm 29) but will probably get back on soon because the cramps are killing me again....
32I started taking the pill when I was 16 or 17. I only took it for about a year and a half.. I'm afraid of all the risk involved. Also, at work, I do a lot of paperwork and she's having difficulty getting pregnant. I'm not entirely sure if it's because of the pill, but thats one of my biggest fears, not being able to get pregnant when I want one of my own.
33I got put on it at 15 to counter another hormone pill I take for acne. I have tried orthotricyclen and its generics, and am on Yaz now. Being going strong for 9 years and nothing scary has happened yet.
34Freshman year of college. Wasn't sexually active, but wanted to regulate my cycles.
35Susan ~ thanks! I'm really motivated to try now
36I got on it when I was 16, for acne. I ended up using it for real when I became sexually active during college. it's now a doctor's order from my dermatologist, since that's what I mainly use it for now anyways.
37I gained a lot of weight my freshman year of college (early last year) and I went 4 months without a period. I started taking it to regulate my hormones in April '07, and started needing it for other reasons that August. *wink*
38I got on the pill for non-birth-control reasons, right before my current boyfriend and I started dating. I was 25 then.
39I was 14, because my periods were so bad I was throwing up and pulling hair out (literally). My mom had endometriosis, and the doctor thinks I do too. So, I guess its been 11 years now...wow.
40I was 17, almost 18.
41I've been on the same birth control since.
I was put on it at 13- when I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Been on it ever since, and will prob continue my entire life.
42I was 18, just had sex, rushed to the health center for Plan B, then made an appointment with a gynecologist for birth control pills. Since then, I've switched once.
43OMG Silverlining, that is almost EXACTLY the situation that happened to me! I was 18 and I ran to the student health center to get Plan B the morning after my first time. I dragged my boyfriend with me for support (I was so nervous I could barely ask the receptionist for it!), made an appointment with a gynecologist and got on the pill immediately. I was not going to mess around with the possibility of having a kid at that age, no siree!
I went off it
once for 3 months when me & my boyfriend were separated for the summer, but otherwise I've been on it ever since. Never changed dosages, just used different brands with the same dosages
at different times.
44I went on about a year ago to manage my period. I only started using it for contraception with my current beau.
45I started it half a month ago. I'm getting married in 9 months (hello, I may be ready for marriage but definitely not for kids) but also I just wanted to start trying to regulate my period because it's been unpredictable since the start (so 8ish years) and I'm sick of waiting for it to regulate itself.
46I've been on since I was 13 due to non birth control reasons. Doctors found a cyst and since my period wasn't normal ( very heavy bleeding that led to a blood transfusion), they decided it would help me. It wasn't until almost a year ago that I actually started using them for birth control purposes (aside from bleeding).
47Month before starting college..... and a month b4 I lost my virginity... but I didnt plan on losing my virginity as soon as I got to College... I had been with the guy for 6 months.
48I was 16 and I initially started because my period was out-of-this-world irregular (I had one ever couple of months and so on) and I had cramps that were unbearable. Since than (I'm 20 now), I've never found a reason NOT to continue taking it.
49When I was 18 and started my first serious relationship. Technically it was the patch and I was only on the pill for less than a month. I have an IUD now and will never go back.
