- Tree-Sitters Climb Down:
After a 21-month occupation, four remaining tree-sitters in an oak grove on the UC Berkeley campus, climbed down and into police custody. School officials had cut off food and water supplies Monday and were prepared to remove the activists using force. The tree-sitters were trying to stop the construction of a $125 million sports center which threatened 42 trees on campus. - Quake Shakes Iran:
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake has hit southern Iran near the site of a large Iranian oil refinery, injuring 22 and killing three. Officials fear the quake damaged older parts in the refinery. Iran is the world's fourth largest oil exporter, the refinery struck processes 320,000 barrels a day. - More Calling Suicide Hotline:
More Americans are calling the government's suicide hotline, 47,000 of them in the last month alone. The line receives a 10 percent increase every month, which the staff attributes to more people knowing about it, than an increase in the suicidal. In 2005, the last year of the data, there were more than 32,600 suicide deaths. - US Deficit at $438 Billion:
The US budget deficit is set to reach $438 billion in 2009 according to Congressional Budget Office estimates. The figure doesn't take into account government costs associated with taking over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The previous record for deficit was $413 billion in 2004. Last year's deficit was $161 billion.

Just a note to others- there is also the easier to remember 1-800-SUICIDE hotline as well. I worked at a call center for this hotline for two years. The number can be called as a contact for distressing times- even if you aren't actively thinking "I am committing suicide tonight", and you've just been having a hard time and need some guidance, it can be helpful. The hotlines have access to local databases, so they can look up more solid contacts in your area to help you out. For instance, many callers were highly distressed in connection to not having the medical attention they need, so we were able to look up organizations that can advise them on getting medical support in their area AND look up numbers for counseling centers close to their home.
Remembering the 1-800-SUICIDE number can come in handy, even if you aren't in need of it yourself, because often times a friend will not want to discuss their private issues with you, but you can suggest the anonymity of a call line to let them "vent".
1they should have brought out the jaws of life to shake those idiots out of the trees a year ago. talk about a waste of resources... not only did the uc berkeley campus police have to deal with it, but the idiotic news media here covered the story on an almost daily basis. ugh. good riddance to them.
2The should've put squares under the tree, and took bets as to which square the "tree huggers" would fall onto when they were shaken out of the tree. That would've gotten their attention.
3omg!!!! 438 billion???????? where are we headed to?
4OMFG! 438 billion! That's freakin' scary!
5Getting suicide information by a commenter named "Death by Chocolate" somehow feels perverse. Funny but perverse. Thank you Chocolate.
6Totally agree YY, we've been waiting and waiting to see what was going to happen. I personally was in favor of them cutting the trees down with them in it. These people need jobs and to be productive members of society for a change.
7I bet if they would have let some giant army ants go on those trees they would have gotten down long ago
