British comedian Russell Brand hosted the MTV Video Music Awards last night and proved in the current climate, not even handing out trophies for music videos is immune from a healthy dose of politicization. Brand's assessment of President George Bush was more than pointed. He said:
Some people, I think they're called racists, say America is not ready for a black president. But I know America to be a forward thinking country because otherwise why would you have let that retard and cowboy fella be president for eight years? We were very impressed. We thought it was nice of you to let him have a go, because, in England, he wouldn't be trusted with a pair of scissors.
Shots of the audience, including Britney Spears and not-of-voting-age-yet Miley Cyrus, looked stricken by the riff. Brand went on to appeal “on behalf of the world," that people vote for Barack Obama.
Reviews of the performance have been mixed, with the LA Times saying, "The 2008 VMAs were poised to mark the return of Britney Spears. Instead, they will go down in history as the night when that English guy from Forgetting Sarah Marshall almost made the Jonas Brothers cry." One MTV fan said, "Russell WHO? I didn't realize this show was an Osama [sic] campaign rally. This British nobody looks like he was pulled from the ranks of the homeless — with his unshaved look, rats' nest hair-do and foul mouth." The New York Times was more appreciative of the "manic, intelligent English comedian." Were you?

Its over the line in my opinion, but than again he is a nobody hosting a nothing show.
1I also took issue with the fact that he berated the Jonas brothers for their decision to wear purity rings over and over, mocked Levi johnston and Piper Palin, and called Sarah Palin a VILF. When did become OK to make fun of teenagers for having morals and sticking by them, even when it is difficult? (I'm not saying that everyone who has premarital sex is immoral by any means, just that the Jonas brothers decided not to have premarital sex and, by all accounts, have stuck with that decision.) Brand didn't mention their promise rings once, he went on and on about it. And when did it become OK to mock teenagers, even if their mother (or future mother-in-law), is a politician? I always thought Chelsea Clinton was not treated well and I really feel for Piper and Levi. And who Palin isn't receiving sexist treatment? Talking about how he'd like to "fool around" with her was utterly classless.
Telling people to vote for Obama didn't bother me that much. I mean, I rolled my eyes, but whatever, it's his right to say that.
2citizen you forgot to mention the snarky comments he made toward the palin family, that was over board but there are people who think that way
3Ugh since when do coedians do political correctness especially towards politicians? It's not like anyone who is relevant politiccally said it.
4I've heard the same type of venal attacks from right wing talk radio. I personally don't like any of it, but what can you do?
5I didn't watch it, but it was bad enough that my wife, who loves those shows, had to turn it off. I'm disappointed that it has become chic to degrade leaders of our country. I'm betting it will suddenly become off limits if O gets elected.
6it's mtv. what do you expect?
7IMO its only chic to degrade pres. bush, not all leaders. the rest of the world truly hates him.
8I've never even heard of this guy. MTV has fallen so far from what it use to be.
9I know, Piper. I remember when they actually played music all day. It was really cool when it started. Now it's like a commercial for hyperactive sexaholics.
God I sound old.
10I don't know if the rest of the world hates Bush. I don't necessarily care what they think of him, as long as the person in charge of our country is looking our country.
11I have done a lot of backpacking and in my experience (which could be different from others) there really is a universal hate of him. It was extremely common for americans to wear canadian flags on their backpacks just so they didn't have to hear the insults. everywhere you go that's all people want to talk about -- how much bush sucks. i'm almost 100% positive that anyone who has backpacked around the world would agree with me.
Keeping America first is obviously the most important thing but keeping out allies is also important as well as looking out for americans abroad. much of the world disliking us cant be a good thing, no matter how you try to spin it.
12You're right pinkprincess, he said much, much more including: "Sarah Palin, she's a VILF, maybe. A vice president I'd like to ... fumble, fondle? I don't know," and, "That is the safe sex message of all time. Use a condom or become a Republican!"
13i hate bush but thats just me
14UnDave from what i've seen and heardthere is a universal dislike ofBush and America since he's been in power.
15citizen did you also see the part where he was talking about the future son in law levi that was just as bad, but the vilf comment wow that was insane
16Eh, he can say whatever he wants to say. I think much worse things have been said by people with much wider (IMO) platforms (well, wider than the MTV VMAs, but maybe I'm just saying that because I'm an old fart and don't watch it anymore), and I believe that regardless of my political beliefs.
I do think he's pretty funny, though, and just because not a lot of people know him here in the US doesn't really make him non-famous (as that MTV fan noted in the post above, "Russell WHO?").
17He's a comedian! I'd raise an eyebrow if someone from the Obama campaign made this joke or something, but it's not even really original, it's Chris Rock's joke from an interview like two years ago, lemme find it...
"Rock was asked, "Is this country ready for an African American president?" To which he answered, "It's ready for a retarded president, why wouldn't it be ready for an African American president?" "
18...oh, also? His comments can't be all that surprising, given how the UK feels (or, not to generalize, but a lot of the people in the UK...speaking from experience as I have quite a few friends over there) about Bush.
19I just posted and my comment got flagged, but it was just saying he's a comedian. People like Sraah SIlverman and Chris Rock say really un-pc things and it's just meant to be funny. This is actually a rip of a Chris Rock joke from 2007.
20MTV is dumb anyways. If MTV wants to alienate their audience that isn't in highschool, hanging on every word celebrities say, they're more than welcome. I've long since stopped watching.
21The Bush thing didn't really bother me that much, the unflinching making fun of teenagers for choosing to have morals and stick by them did.
I think you also have to consider audience when looking at comedians. Chris Rock and Sarah Silverman's comedy is intended for adult audiences; MTV is intended for teenage audiences.
22I think MTV started alienating people who, you know, liked MUSIC VIDEOS a long time ago, foxie.
So lame.
23this could be a little controversial but, I think there's a judgement by the people who decide to wait of the people who dont as well.
24...and I can see what you're saying lilkim. I've noticed that a lot of the whole making fun of teenagers for having morals thing has gotten a lot worse since the days of Britney/Jessica Simpson/etc. claming they were virgins, but perhaps they've gotten worse because of those types of claims and how much attention people gave those claims? Does that make any sense? At any rate though I do agree that he should have left that area alone.
25i agree lilkimbo
"the unflinching making fun of teenagers for choosing to have morals and stick by them did."
26That may very well be the case, but that doesn't give the people who don't decide to wait the right to mock those who do. One side being judgmental does not justify the other side being judgmental, particularly when Brand was specifically mocking the Jonas Brothers, who have never made negative comments towards those who don't decide to wait.
27I do agree with that, em. (I can't type quickly enough, #26 was in response to #23.) I think that the fact that some celebs were so vocal about supposedly waiting does cast doubt on those who do wear promise rings, etc.
28...and another good point livvylove.
Every time I hit post I see another point I
want to comment on. Sorry peeps
29And I want to reiterate again (this is not directed towards anyone, but I don't want anyone taking what I'm saying the wrong way) that I don't believe those who have sex before marriage are necessarily immoral or bad people; I just don't think mocking those who choose to wait is "cool."
30I really have NOT A CARE IN THE WORLD what he thinks. Who is he? Some British comedian???? He does not matter at all, for goodness sake he can't even vote. He is just filling American teenagers heads with BS.
31It comes down to freedom of speech. Isn't that why we love this country? Unfortunately, it we're going to hear offensive things and it's our choice to ignore it or not. Consider the source and move on. That being said, I also think MTV should consider their audience and be a little bit more responsible and mature..but then again, it's MTV--What'd we expect?!
32I don't suppose this will be a popular opinion, but I think "waiting for marriage" is a silly and antiquated idea. It does bother me when people talk about being moral and waiting and imply that they are better than I am. I wish we didn't demonize consensual adult sex in whatever form it takes.
33Oh get over it, comedians live to make un-PC comments. If you're going to be in the public eye you have to grown some thick skin, take it for what it is -- a joke -- and move on. I seriously do not think the president, nor the Palins, or even the Jonas Bros. are crying over any of it.
34Brand is British, and although I am not a fan of the guy personally (I think he's a doughnut), he has a right to his opinion like everyone else. The truth is, he's not far off. Britain as a country is friendly to America, and the people there really LIKE America, but they don't like Bush as a rule, and with good reason, as they are also still pretty angry at Blair for ever involving them in the first place.
As for the sex thing, Brand should keep his mouth shut, he's an admitted clinical nymphomaniac who can't say no at all, which is hardly an improvement on the opposite.
35Exactly punk.
36And just as comedians have the right to say what they want, we have the right to express our distaste for their comments.
As far as the whole waiting for marriage being an antiquated idea, I have to disagree. I also have to make the point that a lot of teenagers these days (I can't speak specifically for the Jonas brothers) who choose to wear Promise rings aren't waiting for marriage, they are waiting for the "right person, " someone for whom they truly have feelings.
37I think getting upset at the VILF comment is a little over board, she's 44 with a 4-month old, clearly she's do-able. But it's totally off topic for a music video awards show.
As for the Jonas Brothers, they're in the music industry and fair game. Feel bad for them if you have to but they entered a business knowing their personal lives were going to be put on the line. It's unfortunate, but standard. I don't think morality should be attacked, but I'm not surprised.
If no one cared/talked about celebs personal lives, this website wouldn't have the following it does.
38What I honestly don't get about this whole wait/not wait thing is why they have to make it public like that. It's a private matter, so why wear a "purity ring" (and talk about it publicly) in the first place?
39The name "purity ring" alone already implies that those who don't wait are less "pure" and, frankly, I find that offensive.
My problem with this is that he came into our country and said these things, I am sorry but if you are a citizen of this country our leaders are free game but don't cross the pond and start talking cr@p about our leaders. Just my opinion.
40Yes, but our leader affected them too. He has affected the entire world.
41Actually, Jen, one of the reasons I like Pop is the fact that, while it provides celebrity gossip, it is positive in nature, unlike a lot of other celeb gossip sites.
42Why he is mocking it is because all those little teens who vowed to be pure till marriage etc etc aren't pure anymore. Britney spears being the most famous example her mom has said she lost her virginity at 14 so basically she was just lying. It's not about having morals it's abotu maintaing a squeaky clean look till you're legal and your true colours can come out without affecting sales or a fan base. And as for the whole purity ring thing, I don't want to know that you are a virgin or not, your sex life doesn't concern so keep it to yourself.
43And my issue with the VILF comment comes from the fact that, once again, she is judged based on her looks. Palin is not an entertainer, she is a politician. It bothers me how much female politicians are judged based on their looks when compared with male politicians.
44Mcpro so you can be American and talk crap about your leaders but you can't be a foreigner and talk crap about Bush. who died and made him untouchable? Oh please if I had a dollar for everytimea foreigner said an unPC thing in the country they were visiting I would be at home shopping up a storm instead of here trudging int he rain to class.
45mcpro26, it's not is if he just came over though, MTV invited him and I'm sure they knew what kind of a comedian he is.
46I laughed when he said wear a condom or become a republican but that was the only thing I actually found funny. Did he go over the line? Probably. But he is a comedian. A comedian not even from this country who no one had ever heard of before he hosted the VMAs. So I wouldn't take it too seriously. He didn't seem to get a lot of laughs from the crowd from what I saw. After last night, I doubt we will hear from him again anytime soon but who knows. I won't be rushing out to watch him do stand up.
47If foreigners can't talk crap about Bush, then what about us? We were not supposed to talk bad about Hussain? Theses are world leaders were talking about--anyone has a right to bash them.
48Vespa, I totally agree with you. I hate that we judge people for who they choose to have sex with. As long as they are consenting adults, it's none of my business and I don't care. The guy or girl who waits for marriage or The One isn't a better person than the guy or girl who has sex with lots of people.
And Mädchen, yes! You can't say you're pure for not having sex without implying people who do have sex are impure.
The whole thing doubly bugs me because it's usually women who are judged more harshly for having sex when they are not married.
What if you don't meet The One until you're 40? But you meet lots of nice people you'd like to have sex with before then?
49You're right, purity ring is not the correct term. They are typically called promise rings and the promise made is to yourself that you won't have sex until you're ready. Since when is that a bad thing?
