Democratic VP nominee Joe Biden made his 42nd appearance yesterday on Meet the Press. Tom Brokaw asked him some tough questions, often reciting previous Biden statements from many years past. Here's a rundown on how Biden met questions about the surge, abortion, religion, and the latest addition to the race, Sarah Palin.
- On Sunni/Shia cooperation in Anbar:
It's still — it's a big problem, Tom. . . . We're paying 300 bucks a month to each of those guys. Now the problem has been and the promise was made by Maliki that they (Shia) would be integrated into the overall military. That's a process that is beginning in fits and starts now, but it's far from over. - On a timed withdrawal of American troops:
Whether or not the surge worked is almost irrelevant now. We're in a new deal. What is the administration doing? They're doing what Barack Obama has suggested over 14 months ago, turn responsibility over and draw down our troops. . . . The only guy in America out of step is John McCain. John McCain's saying no timeline. - On Iraq, the surge, and political reconciliation:
The surge helped make that (reduction in sectarian violence) possible. What made it possible in Anbar province is they did what I'd suggested two and a half years ago: gave local control. They turned over and they said to the Sunnis in Anbar province, "We promise you, don't worry, you're not going to have any Shia in here. There's going to be no national forces in here. We're going to train your forces to help you fight al-Qaeda." . . . What you had was the awakening. The awakening was not an awakening by us, it was an awakening of the Sunnis in Anbar province willing to fight.
To see what Biden had to say about his view on abortion as a Catholic, and for his view on Republican counterpart Sarah Palin, read more.
- On abortion:
It is a personal and private issue. For me as a Roman Catholic I'm prepared to accept the teaching of my church. But let me tell you, there are a lot of people of great confessional faiths, Protestants, Jews, Muslims and others, who have a different view. They believe in God as strongly as I do. They're intently as religious as I am religious. They believe in their faith and they believe in human life, and they have differing views. I'm prepared as a matter of faith to accept that life begins at the moment of conception, but that is my judgment. For me to impose that judgment on everyone else who is equally, maybe even more devout than I am, seems to me is inappropriate in a pluralistic society. . . . What I've voted against is curtailing the right, criminalizing abortion. I've voted against telling everyone else in the country that they have to accept my religiously based view, that it's at moment of conception. - Would he debate her any differently because she's a woman?
There's a lot of very tough, smart women in the United States Senate I debate every day. It's not new. - On Palin's policies:
I have no idea what her policies are. I assume they're the same as John's. I just don't know. . . . She didn't mention a word about health care, a word about the environment, a word about the middle class. They never parted her lips . . . so I don't know where she is on those things.
Are you eager to see Sarah Palin enter and defend her positions on the TV program of record?

What he said about McCain and the timeline is entirely inaccurate. McCain has always recognized that we will leave when the Iraqis are ready for us to leave.
McCain also supported the surge, which even most Democrats admit worked, long before Bush ever did.
1"For me to impose that judgment on everyone else who is equally, maybe even more devout than I am, seems to me is inappropriate in a pluralistic society. . . . What I've voted against is curtailing the right, criminalizing abortion. I've voted against telling everyone else in the country that they have to accept my religiously based view, that it's at moment of conception."
I love this, and I can't wait for their debate.
2"I have no idea what her policies are. I assume they're the same as John's. I just don't know. . . . She didn't mention a word about health care, a word about the environment, a word about the middle class. They never parted her lips . . . so I don't know where she is on those things."
A-FREAKIN-MEN JOE BIDEN!
3In defense of Sarah, she hasn't been around Washington since the creation of time like Biden. We'll all find out what she stands for. I can't wait to see her debate him.
4He was great.
5
Piper. Very TRUE! I'm excited about this debate.
6"she hasn't been around Washington since the creation of time like Biden."
"It is a personal and private.....What I've voted against is curtailing the right, criminalizing abortion. I've voted against telling everyone else in the country that they have to accept my religiously based view, that it's at moment of conception."
I completely agree with him on his views on abortion. I do believe life starts at conception but I don't think a group of people should enforce their views on everybody else.
I don't know a lot of Sarah Palin's policies except for drilling in Alaska, taking the Polar Bears off the endangered list, wants to teach creationism in school, believes in abstinence-only education, doesn't support the the Bridge to Nowhere, and apparently believes Alaska should be independent (which is completely ridiculous imo).
7If her record speaks for itself, it doesn't say anything that makes me want to learn more about her.
8Although she did used to support the Bridge to Nowhere, wadewifey, right?
9Of course she did, she lied in her speech about supporting it when she did. Now she doesn't support it. I still don't know much about her policies.
10about NOT supporting it.
I'm tripping, my time is almost running out (I'm at the library).

13Actually, she doesn't really want to teach creationism in school, she wants the information to be available to students who ask. I also don't think she seriously believes Alaska should be independent. As for any educational concerns, she would not impose them or attempt to impose them on a national level because she believes education is a state issue.
Something she did that I think a lot of people will agree with: She refused to sign a bill into law that denied same-sex couples the same rights as married couples. She did so because it conflicted with Alaska's Constitution. While I don't agree with a lot of her personal views, I think it says something that she based her decision on the state Constitution.
14ARG. I won't start but if we went by that mentality minorities still wouldn't have the right to vote. It's ludicrous to think that the constitution won't have to ammend with the evolution of man.
15I don't think I made my point well. She is not against amending the Constitution. The bill that came across her desk would have denied same-sex couples equal rights and she vetoed it.
16Thus giving same-sex couples equal rights in terms of spousal benefits, etc.
17Oh okay. Thanks lil.
18I'm looking forward to hearing more from her. I think that there is a concern - even from within her party - that she doesn't have background on some key issues that are important in this election.
I think she needs to at least show that she can be brought up to speed quickly and speak intelligently (and off the cuff) about important issues. Speeches aren't going to be enough to show this, imo.
19I definitely want to hear more from her. I am still worried about her a bit and disagree with her on some issues, but most of what I disagree with her on involves things that both she and I believe should be left to the states, anyway.
20Lil, I'm really glad to hear that you have some reservations about her. To be honest, I was starting to get creeped out by the lockstep enthusiastic support of her that I've been feeling come out of the Republican Party.
21Yeah, I mean, she wouldn't have been my first pick, that's for sure. That doesn't necessarily mean I don't think she's ready to lead or that I do think she's ready to lead. I have investigated her quite a bit, but I feel like I do still need some more information.
22McCain wouldn't have been my first pick to top the ticket, either, but I liked a lot of what he said about smaller government at the convention. He is bringing me more to his side.
23I don't think anyone has succinctly summed up my own views on abortion as a Catholic as well as Joe Biden did right there. Pretty awesome, IMO.
This is also interesting to hear: "What you had was the awakening. The awakening was not an awakening by us, it was an awakening of the Sunnis in Anbar province willing to fight." I can't wait for the debates and I hope a lot of people will be watching!
24Oh, and Lil, out of curiosity, which person would you have liked to see top the ticket?
25I was a Romney supporter. I agree with a lot of his views and I really think his wide array of experiences would have served our country well.
26I was a romney girl myself. but will glady support McCain now.
Sidenote- I cant listen to Tom Brokaw without hearing the "Gerald Ford" skit from SNL
27I am still frightened by Biden. I think he's one part good and two parts evil. I have no proof of this. It is something I feel in my heart. Watch him. Watch him closely.
28"One part good and two parts evil" is the recipe for my favorite cocktail.
29That sounds filthy, Jude.
30It's delicious.
"Good" is any kind of fruit juice..."evil" is any kind of hard, hard, filthy liquor
31I want to know what she stands for and not hide behind McCain. He's no spring chicken and if something happens to him, she's next up. I don't know that she has the experience to lead a country and I'm afraid Bush will make her his puppet. I'm not bashing, but I'm honestly asking McCain supporters--are you comfortable with her leading if she had to?
32I think a lot of McCain supporters are still up in the air. However, I also think that a lot of McCain supporters would be much more comfortable with Palin leading the country than with Obama leading the country. (And not because of experience, because of policy differences.) I'm sure Palin would surround herself with a group of experienced advisors, just as Obama will if he's elected.
And I don't think you have to worry too much about Bush making her his puppet. Once he's out of office, he will have no real pull in the Republican party. A lot of people think he is a puppet.
33*wanders off to bed pondering versions of Jude's cocktail recipe.
Thanks, Jude.
34Thanks, lilkimbo--very true.
35Rabid: whiskey and lemonade (counts as a fruit juice, right?)
36I'm not up in the air about it. I think she will make and excellent VP. I am more than comfortable with the idea of her leading this country should McCain check out.
37I heard today on talk radio that she changed her mind on the "bridge to no where" when the cost increased from $230 million 10 $400 million. Don't know if it is true or not, but that sounds like a good reason to change one's mind.
38I also wanted to say as far as creationism goes--churches need to provide that information, not schools. There are enough churches to go around that can provide that to kids who are asking. Separation of church and state--that's how it should remain.
39The surge was basic clean up. We would have never needed the surge if we didn't enter into the bogus lie of a war. Which some Democrats where right on that.
40Please this woman qualified the run the country -- NO WAY. Is she's ready -- so is my grandmother who had 17 kids.
41In defense of Sarah, she hasn't been around Washington since the creation of time like Biden.
IMO, this shouldn't be a defense. Shouldn't the President be comfortable in Washington?
42I think Piper meant that that's a big part of why we don't know what she stands for at this point.
43gotcha...sorry, i tried to read all the posts but i must've skimmed over a couple.
44i can't wait for the debate. sarah palin is going down. what a horrifically vile woman.
45I love what Biden said about abortion. I hope this reminds a lot of people that America was founded on the separation of Church and State. I can't wait for the VP debates. Biden talks about policies and real facts, while Palin seems to make little sarcastic comments and skews truths.
46I just read that Palin "bashed" Obama for earmarks he got for Illinois when she asked for 10 times more per citizen in her state. Is this lady crazy?? Someone needs to stop her.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080908/ap_on_el_pr/mccain_palin
47really america was founded on the separation of church and state?
48"Someone needs to stop her."
I'll gladly step into the voting booth to do my part.
49I'll second that Jude
