Can I see some ID? For immigrants in San Francisco, the answer to that is "not quite yet." Plans to roll out a controversial program providing identification for all residents regardless of legal status is on hold for the moment. The plan is suspended pending a "thorough review" of its legality, and cities that were set to watch the rollout for plans of their own are put off for the moment.
Based on a similar ID plan in New Haven, CT, Mayor Gavin Newsom says he sees it as a practical move that will ease receipt of local services and make it easier for city government workers to determine who is eligible to get them. The delay has caused detractors to question the real motive — is it accounting or ambition? Supervisor Tom Ammiano accused Newsom of backtracking on the issue because of his possible 2010 gubernatorial bid. Ammiano said, "the perception in the community is that this is alarmist, and it's more about the mayor's ambitions to become governor."
Is giving out an ID card to all residents to qualify them for city services a good idea — or another loosening of laws in the proud sanctuary city?

I think its an awesome idea.
1Sounds like asking people to sew a star of David on their shirt.
2why should local money/help be given out to people who do not pay the taxes in that area? or who are here illegally? Its a good idea for the government to keep tabs on where that goes for future use.
Do you know how many hospitals, needed ones, have gone bankrupt because of illegal immigrants? what happens to the locals who needed that facility?

9I am a white, 30 something, american citizen, and i carry around a state of florida drivers license, i have a social security number that the government uses to identify me...how dare they label me.
10i think you guys are missing the point?? people didnt think it was a good idea to begin with becuase it gave immigrants TOO many rights, caterpillar girl. and dreamsugar, it's not like being asked for your papers in nazi germany - it's giving "invisible" people some sort of ID so we can track the services they are receiving. you guys are both arguing the opposing arguments... this is kind ofh ilarious.

12I think everyone should definitely have some form of government-issue ID, and I see no problem in making their immigration status clear on their IDs (I mean, certain forms of ID already automatically make your citizenship status clear, such as a passport), but I don't understand why they would automatically qualify for more assistance based on the fact that they've got IDs. That part doesn't sound good to me.
13I think tax evasion ID cards are a great idea.
14Jude, I don't think it makes them eligible simply because they have an ID, I think it makes it easier for the government to determine if they are eligible or not. (unless I read the linked article wrong

16i think that it really depends on whether there are ulterior motives being considered here. if the point is that they want to be able to identify who is eligible for what services and maintain some type of order and database, then it's ok, since in think that there's something to be said about trying to keep tabs on people, but i think that there also needs to be some way to make sure that the US citizens are getting what they need first since they are citizens...
i don't know. i can understand everyone's wish for a better life and that's why some people choose to come to the US but i think that they need to make sure that they are abiding by the same rules and taking the steps to become citizens if they want the same rights.
