With a Hurricane of a damper cast on the convention and the first day's schedule scrapped, the buzz here now is how the best way to handle the convention in the midst of a pending national disaster. Sounding awfully presidential, McCain said,
I pledge that tomorrow night and, if necessary, throughout our convention, we will act as Americans and not as Republicans, because America needs us now. No matter what we are — Republican or Democratic — America needs us to do what all Americans have always done in times of disaster and challenge.
President Bush and Vice President Cheney have already canceled their appearances, McCain has suspended most convention activities tomorrow, and solutions being floated include turning tomorrow's session into a fundraising telethon for hurricane victims. The McCain campaign is making a chartered jet available in St. Paul for any delegates from Louisiana and Mississippi who want to return home.
I'm heading out to pick up my pass now, and will let you know what else I hear about the fate of the convention as soon as I hear it!

You know, I was so mad about Gustav interrupting the convention, but now I think it will actually be better for the GOP, give McCain a chance to look, as you say, presidential.
Not that I would wish for a hurricane. Just saying it's happening, so let's look at the consequences.
1What an awesome quote!

I feel like finally America is seeing what I've been screaming about since 2000.
3What are everyone's thoughts on the Sarah/Bristol Palin Trig Palin pregnancy rumors?? I find it intriguing and very far fetched... I want to see where it goes.
4I can't wait for it to begin.
5What is that stiletta?
6Marseeah... I hadn't heard about that....
7And who's birthday party did George W attend before he travelled to see the ravaged city of New Orleans three years ago? I'm sure McCain doesn't want everyone to remember that fact.
8Marseeah, I had herd that but I think it sounds made up. I wouldn't give it any credit unless some sort of factual evidence emerges. As of now it's just a Nation Enquirer quality rumor.
9Justanerd1975 check this out: http://gawker.com/5043944/the-truth-about-those-sarah-palin-pregnancy-co...
10I think it's dangerous to get sucked into these rumours regardless of where you sit politically. This is not the real issue here. Sarah Palin is a VP nominee. Her experience and opinions on what is going on in the world today should be the focus. Governing a very small state for a very short time does not illustrate this sufficiently. She needs to be quizzed on her view points re world affairs and not her thoughts about motherhood etc.
11Rubbish like this just clouds the issues.
gawker.com is not really a reputable source. It's like posting a link to perezhilton.com. And that article was a little cruel when it pointed out the baby was named after a math that he will never be able to do. It's all speculation. If Obama supporters latch on this story, they are just going to look pathetic and desperate. If there is any truth this story, it will come out in due time. After all, there must be an army of reporters fighting over who gets to report the dirtiest dirt on this unknown vp nominee.
12This just seems like the whole Obama Muslim thing. It's stupid, but because it's more interesting than economic policy, it will get play.
13Does any one if it's true? Palin got on an eight hour flight after her water broke? Actually the story said her water broke before she gave a 30 minute speech. Then she flew home from Texas to Alaska.
14By the way the article was not a negative one about her. More informational, but that was included in it.
15Marseeah: thanks
16I have no idea what I just read but it was interesting!
Sounded like desperate housewives to me...
Palin has more experience then Obama + she's running for VP not President
17:oyve:
18I can't believe the best they can bring up against Palin is a rumor about her daughter being the real mother of her infant baby?!!!
19While Obama the man running for presidency has questionable ties with a bomber and various extremists??
Garbage!
Palin is pretending to be her granddaughter's momma. Obama thinks terrorists are awesome. McCain is gonna let lobbyists run the country. Biden said Obama was clean and articulate.
This is serious business.
20I'm curious to see what happens with the Republicans and Gustav. Obviously, there will be political ramifications; the Democrats had the normal rah-rah kind, while the Republicans will have to cut down on the cheering but get the opportunity to look somber and appropriate. So, I'm curious to see how it all shakes down.
21With all due respect to everyone, reguardless of political persuasion, we had our unfortunate and proverbial "dress rehersal" with Katrina. Three years later, many are STILL living in FEMA trailers. Whether we learned from this is not party-specific, nor should any party look to gain from it.
22That's right fuzzles. We should have built them energy efficient homes by now.
23organic, I think you're confusing me with Brad Pitt.
24Vespa- lol, yes I guess at least the election is interesting.
While I think these rumors could be true, the character-slamming that has gone about Palin is getting ridiculous. As far as the personal stuff goes, Palin seems like a very nice woman, though as a vegetarian from the East Coast who is more interested in academics than PTA meetings and beauty pageants, I can't relate to her very much. I feel so bad for her daughter, who is being scrutinized for looking preggers in a picture; so if she wasn't pregnant, not only did she look "fat," but fat enough that people thought she was pregnant! And people who don't even know if she got pregnant are calling her a slut! It's ridiculous!
And if I hear one more thing about how Palin can't work and be a mom, or how she should or shouldn't have aborted Trig, or anything like that, I'm really going to have to go all feminazibonerkiller on everyone. I thought the sexism with Clinton was bad enough, but the way Palin has been treated is even worse.
I mean, there are a TON of other things to criticize her on: her treatment of the environment, shooting wolves from planes, asking to have polar bears taken off the endangered species lists. Her participation in anti-abortion groups that advocate against abortion even in the case of rape and incest. Her stance on equal pay for equal work (against it!), gay marriage (against it!) and teaching science in schools (for it as long as creation myths are also taught). See, we don't have to stoop to criticizing her personal life!
Well, good for McCain, I thought NOTHING would make me interest in the RNC!
25snowbunny,
I saw that dailykos article about Paln's daughter. They should be ashamed of themselves. They have a picture of her when she is supposedly about 7 months pregnant and she just looks like a normal teenage girl with a bit of a belly. Then they imply that if Palin was indeed pregnant than she was reckless with the health of the fetus. She can't win. All the photographic "evidence" is inconclusive and, hello, photoshop! The left needs to leave this story alone. It serves only to make them look bad.

26Oh thank goodness, I found a sane thread! I had just about given up hope on the modern woman until I found this.
27Haha...yeah, honestly before this election I was very proud to be a Democrat. I still am of course, but now it's evident that there can be Dem. crazies (PUMAS!) and that liberal sites like the dailykos have taken this bashing way too far. I mean, after all the crap that Clinton went through, even from her own party, it makes me sad to see how quickly the sexism and personal attacks have moved on to Palin!
I mean, so what if Palin DID try to pass of her grandson as her son anyway? I was raised by my grandparents, and though I was very glad that they didn't try to pass me off as their child, it's just not that big of a deal. Sure, if Palin refused to work at all on teenage prevention programs that would be hypocritical. But it's just this wild rumor right now! Ugh.
And I actually read and downloaded some of the stuff on dailykos about Palin, and it isn't that shocking (considering her political positions), so I think they are making a big deal about things that aren't really that controversial. The pentecostal stuff is really creepy to me, but I would assume that is why McCain picked her. Trust me, I wanted to find something that was like, "then Palin gave a keynote address to the KKK..."
kastarte- I hope that most people will give dems and liberals the benefit of not thinking we are all as crazy as the PUMAS or dailykos, but I haven't always done that to republicans so...
