- McCain Set to Pick Palin as VP: According to sources close to the campaign, John McCain has picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate. A formal announcement is expected shortly at a campaign rally in Ohio. A 44-year-old mom, Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, thought to be awaiting her formal introduction.
- Mexico's Court Upholds Abortion:
Mexico's Supreme Court has voted to uphold legal abortion in Mexico City, keeping the city one of only a few places in Latin America that allow abortion without limitations in the first trimester. The Roman Catholic church blasted the 8-3 decision announcing that they will redouble their fight against it. - Iraq Signs $3 Billion Oil Deal:
Iraq has signed a $3 billion oil deal with China, its first oil deal with a foreign country since 2003. The contract is pending approval by the Iraqi cabinet, but if passed work could begin on the oil field in a few months. The 22-year contract is a new version of a 1997 contract with China began under Saddam Hussein.

Yay. A pro-life anti-gay marriage "feminist" who was the runner up for Miss Alaska. At least I don't have to worry about feeling torn between candidates.
1Yay Mexico Supreme Court!
2Bout d*mn time, I been waiting to hear. mmm not so sure about her but she sounds like a fighter.
3I'm glad Mexico city voted to uphold abortion. Back ally abortions kill women so good for Mexico City.
I like Sarah but due to her stance on issues that are important to me, I will not be voting McCain Palin in November. Though, to be fair, I probably wouldn't have voted for McCain no matter who he chose.
4Hooooooray Mexico!
5i think i like palin and this is an interesting choice for mccain!
6mondaymoos, was she really the runner up to Miss Alaska? that is hilarious. Obama's camp is saying this takes the "experience issue" off the table, since she has ZERO foreign policy experience and she's a heartbeat away from the presidency.
7lawchick she has much more excutive expeirience than obama and biden combined. and she's just a vp.
her nomination only highlights the lack of experience on the dems side.
i hope we get a full post to hash this out after mccain makes the announcement!
8ive never heard her speak, so i'm very interested to hear her speak at the RNC.
9just heard that Palin turned down being driven around in the govt Suburban for driving herself around in her VW Jetta! HA! That saved her office thousands of dollars in gas!
Love it!
10I actually admire a lot of the things Sarah Palin has accomplished in Alaska... but due to her very conservative stances on issues that are near and dear to me, her being picked as VP doesn't sway my opinion toward McCain.
11We need some Alaskans to come in here and tell us what they think!
12Until a person has had the experience of being the President of the United States, NO ONE has enough experience. I'm sick of hearing about how candidates don't have the experience to be president. It's old.
13Krradford, I'm sick of it too! UGH
14She has a really interesting story. Great accomplishments and solid experience. I look forward to learning more about her.
15Was Kay Bailey Hutchinson ever talked about? I can't recall.
16Personally I think McCain is both pandering to Hilary supporters in the hopes that the Clinton for McCain folks do exist and will actually vote for him, and trying to offset the Biden choice by picking someone that will make Biden look like a heartless bully if he doesn't pull his punches during the VP debate.
17annebreal....that's EXACTLY what he's doing. BUT you have to admit it's smart.
18annebreal, i kind of agree with you. but i'm going to try and keep an open mind and see what she has to say. a black man for prez with an old white guy as VP, or an old white guy for prez and a woman for VP... history will be made in november no matter what! for the first time in a long while i've got to say this is a good time to be alive.
19And that's what they're going for YY. Challenging the "history is being made" monopoly that Obama had. I have to say it is a very good strategic move.
Oh yeah..... and go team blue.
(Just in case people were confused)
20I find Mexico's decision disheartening, especially given their religious leanings resonate with my own, but I am not familiar with Mexico's legislation...is there some kind of provision concerning separation of Church and state?
Also, I am unsure what to think of Palin -- I know next to nothing about her (except she was a former beauty queen).
The SFist blog claims "Palin is also under investigation for allegedly firing Alaska’s Public Safety Commissioner because he refused to fire Mike Wooten, a state trooper, who is also her ex brother-in-law. (It seems he divorced Sarah Palin's sister, which prompted this mess.) ... Palin 'hunts, eats moose burgers, ice fishes, rides snowmobiles, and owns a float plane.' What's more, she 'holds a lifetime membership with the National Rifle Association' and has admitting to using "marijuana when it was legal in Alaska, but says that she did not like it." (Liar.) Oh, and she also wears pearls and has a kid with Down syndrome. So...there you go."
Is it just me or isn't a bit premature to start tearing her down?
21Oh I'm not trying to tear her down bento. I look forward to learning more about her. I think it IS possible for her to be highly qualified AND for this to be a strategic move by the GOP.

YY and HF!
23Oh my, I just noticed the Iraq-China oil deal. That's a friendship to watch.
24lawchick she has much more excutive expeirience than obama and biden combined. and she's just a vp.
Huh?
She has been a Governer for less than two years That last comment does even
make sense. VP's play a huge role in the white house, if you have not noticed (Cheney...)
