- Obama Speaks Tonight:
After his surprise appearance on stage with VP nominee Joe Biden last night, Obama is set to deliver his nomination acceptance speech at Invesco Field in front of 75,000 people tonight. On the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, it's scheduled to start at 8 p.m. EST. John McCain may announce his VP pick shortly after. - New Orleans May Evacuate:
City officials have begun preliminary measures to evacuate the city of New Orleans as Hurricane Gustav threatens the coast on the eve of Hurricane Katrina's third anniversary. Gov. Bobby Jindal has declared a state of emergency and has put 3,000 National Guard troops on standby. - EU Considers Sanctions:
The EU is considering sanctions and more against Russia over the crisis in Georgia. France has called an emergency summit on Monday to reassess relations with Russia after Moscow refused to pull out all of their troops. Meanwhile, Georgia's foreign minister says that ethnic cleansing in South Ossetia is nearly complete.

I read that McCain is announcing tomorrow morning at a rally in Dayton.
1That's what I heard, too, Lilkimbo. I would rather he hold a rally to announce it then just put out a press release. More exciting.
Obama certainly has some big shoes to fill. It is nice that the first African American presidential nominee is accepting the nomination on the anniversary of MLK's famous Dream speech. It's kind of poetic or at least historic. This is the first time politics has made me feel like it is an exciting time to be alive. Knowing your country is making history, positive history, while your watching is thrilling. No matter what party you are in, that has to be kind of cool. To be able to tell your kids, "I was watching when that happened. This is what I remember..."
I'm glad New Orleans and government officials are taking precautions this time around. Hopefully the storm won't hit or will be significantly weakened by the time it does. They haven't finished rebuilding from Katrina. That area has hit it's quota for disasters.

I agree!
I am also glad about N.O. taking steps now, instead of waiting. Hopefully we learned our lessons from last time.
3Agreed, Kastarte - I am feeling so excited to watch tonight!
4I'm just waiting for tonight and tomorrow's news.
5I'm so looking forward to hearing McCain's pick!! I feel like it's much more of a wildcard for some reason.
6I'm looking forward to it as well, pop. I'm still thinking Romney, but I think it could be Pawlenty or Hutchinson still. It could get interesting.
7Go Jindal!
Preparedness. So lovely and unlike what we're normally used to... cough...
Blanco... cough... Nagin... cough
8I am so excited about all of this too kartarte2... It's probably a good thing I'm not there. I would probably just cry the whole time and then drink too much!
9My mom and I talked about how exciting this election is going to be. It's really increased my interest
10I'm very excited as well!
11Oh, Syako, your family is in N.O., aren't they? Please keep us up to date on all of this and how it is affecting them! I am keeping them in my prayers!
12Thanks dear, for remembering. We're all on high alert! Hopefully nothing will happen!!
13Syako, I second Martini's sentiment. I pray that you and your family will be alright.
14I third it. Be safe and let us know what's happening, sy!
15Sy I'm sending good wishes to you and your loved ones.
16You guys are too sweet! (I'm no longer in N.O. - we just moved) but the fam is all there.
17I'm interested in hearing McCain's VP pick. I heard rumors that it was Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.
I really hope New Orleans isn't flooded again. It seems like such a beautiful, vibrant city and I would love to go there someday, hopefully while it's still intact.
