Long Muslim scarves and lots of clothes worn on the beach can make a woman feel like a fish out of water. One resort in Egypt is making it safe to dive in. Called "La Femme," its women-only status means that women can swim, breast feed, and lounge in bikinis safe from the prying eyes of men.
Given the guidelines of the growing conservatism in the mostly Muslim country, more and more women opt to follow the strict Muslim guidelines of covering their heads and skin. This beach is one of the only ways they can frolic and still be fiercely religious. One woman in her 60s basking in the sun says, "Sometimes I turn around and look behind to make sure there are no men. And, thank God, there aren't any. It is 'haram' (forbidden in Islam) to strut around in front of men in a swimsuit. It is an excellent idea to have a beach reserved for women only."
To see how they guard the women, read more.
It costs money to sunbathe safely — it is mostly upper-class women who can afford the $14 for a weekend's entrance into the gated beach club. With thick branches shielding the women from view and guards at the entrance searching for cameras that might be used to post pictures of the women on the Internet, the women are delighted. One bikini-clad gal says, "It is wonderful here. We don't have to put up with the prying eyes of men. But on the mixed beaches it is unbearable."
I don't know about you, but the idea of women-only places like beaches (or gyms!) sounds just peachy to me. Would you sunbathe sans dudes?

If there's a market for it, why not?
I am not really all that concerned about sunbathing or working out without men around, but I don't see the harm in a private business that only allows women.
It is interesting, though, because I know historically women have had problems with male colleagues conducting business at clubs that didn't allow women. Women could run entire offices from these beaches and men would be none the wiser!
1Lilkim, that sounds like my kind of work!
2That's a great idea. Good for La Femme.
Like lil, I'm also not that bothered by being on the beach or whatever with men around, but even I will have to admit that it would be nice to be able to sunbathe or work out without being creepily stared at or hit on, at least once in a while. It sounds liberating.
3I wish we had that here. I don't have a problem with men at the beach, but I'd just as soon do without them.
4LMAO! "its women-only status means that women can swim, breast feed, and lounge in bikinis safe from the prying eyes of men."
Well who is that on the Camel, Aunt Sally?
5You make me giggle hypnoticmix. I guess I was trying to show the behavior they were trying to avoid in the pic, but I see your point. Aunt Sally is staring for sure
6Oh I see. ;-)>
7But I'd kind of miss watching guys at the beach - when they aren't being pains, they can be pretty entertaining.
8I guess the question is, do the guys at the beach you go to have Michael Phelps bodies or Jim Belushi bodies?
That would make all of the difference for me when considering whether or not I would miss them.
9I don't know what made me pick Jim Belushi. He was the first generic out of shape guy that came to mind, I guess.
10in a country that hot, they deserve it!
11I remember the first time I went to an unofficial (gay) nude beach when I was 23 with my first boyfriend. Woo! The boys were up to somethin. It just blew my mind.
12good stuff
13One question: how was this photo taken if they don't allow cameras?
14I don't think the picture is actually on a woman-only beach. It looks to me like Citizen just chose it to represent the story.
15I think most of the time CitizenSugar uses stock photos. They're not always exactly what the post is about (e.g. the photo of the electric car fueling station on the hybrid car parking post) but add visual interest. So I'm guessing this isn't the actual beach, but rather what you get from searching for "egypt beach" at Getty Images.
16This is one of the photos that came up when I typed in "Egypt Beach"
17Ew, a giant cat box!
18I'm DYING!
I don't even want to know what would happen if I took my cats to the beach...or who has to scoop it up afterwards.
19I'm still amazed at the brilliant photoshop skills it must've taken to make this beautiful collage...
20I mean it's just so REALISTIC!
21i love that there are means for women to enjoy life like they deserve w/o having to go to another country. i can understand the culture and the desire for women to maintain modesty - but this is also 2008 and women deserve the chance to be modern and enjoy the things that they see from others around the world. yes not everyone can afford the entrance fee - but it's on par with what we pay here in the US for some beaches - so it's not unreasonable i think.
22ilanac...
you say you can't understand why a woman would want to be modest?! that is so weird. do you just have no self-respect or worth? wow i dunno why women don't get how men think and why they think it doesn't matter. the american bureau of justice says that out of 61,000 sex offenses, 96% were male perpatrators. that should tell you something.
MEN DO NOT THINK LIKE US! i for one do not want some "jim bilushi" or any man who doesn't even care to know me cuz he can't get past my skin, to think about f*cking me or wanting to jack off at the site of me or my daughter.
how can any woman possibly not want to be modest? please think. this poem was written BY A MAN. men want us to cover up so they can respect us! if you give a man no effort in "winning" you, they become like those spoiled b*tches on my super sweet 16 or whatever the name of that show is. THEY WANT TO WORK FOR IT!!! AND THEY WOULD PREFER FOR WOMEN TO BE MYSTERIOUS!!! ask one or two. sure the immature ones who are (for now) wanting just emotionless sex will say that's not the case, but men don't (usually) marry prostitutes, slutty women, easy women. they just don't respect it and they sure wouldn't want her raising his kids. i know some ppl grow up in messed up situations, but those types should take the majority lead in our society just because they cannot self-govern.
OBJECT OF DESPAIR
(By Fahim Firfiray)
Emma is a lawyer
And so is Aisha too
Colleagues going into court
At circa half past two
Its 1 O'Clock right now
They grab a bite before the trial
They chat about this and that
Conversing with a smile
Aisha is in full hijab
With a loose all over suit
Emma's in her business wear
With accessories to boot
Emma's really quite bemused
At Aisha's godly ways
She looks Aisha in the eyes
And very firmly says
You're a smart girl Aisha
Why do you wear that across your hair?
Subjugated by "man"-kind
An object of despair
Take it off my sister
Let your banner be unfurled
Don't blindly follow all around
DECLARE YOUR FREEDOM TO THE WORLD
Aisha is amazed
But not the least bit shy
She bravely puts her milkshake down
And gives Emma the reply
My dear sister Emma,
Why do you dress the way you do?
The skirt you're wearing round your waist,
Is it really you?
Now that we've sat down
I see you tug it across your thighs,
Do you feel ashamed?
Aware of prying eyes?
I see the way you're sitting,
Both legs joined at the knees,
Who forces you to sit like that?
Do you feel at ease?
I'll tell you who obliges you,
To dress the way you do,
Gucci, Klein, and St. Laurent
All have designs on you!
In the main, its men my friend,
Who dictate the whims of fashion,
Generating all the garb,
To incite the basest passion
"Sex Sells" there is no doubt
But who buys with such great haste,
The answer is likes like you,
Because they want to be embraced...
They want to be accepted,
On a level playing field
Sure, with brain and intellect
But with body parts revealed
Intelligence and reason
Are useful by and by
But if you want to make a mark
Stay appealing to the eye
You claim your skirt is office like
A business dress of sorts
Would we not laugh at Tony Blair?
If he turned up in shorts?
His could be the poshest of pants
Pinstripe from Saville Rowe
But walking round like that my friend
He'd really have to go
Why do you douse yourself in creams
To make your skin so milky?
Why do you rip off all your hair
To keep your body silky?
A simple shower's all you need
To stay respectable and clean
The time and money that you spend
Is really quite obscene
Why do you wake up at dawn,
To apply a firm foundation,
Topped with make up and the like,
In one chaotic combination?
And if you should have to leave the house
Devoid of this routine
Why do you feel insecure
That you should not be seen?
Be free my sister Emma
Escape from your deep mire
Don hijab today my friend
And all Islam's attire
Avoid all those sickly stares
Or whistles from afar
Walk down the street with dignity
Take pride in who you are
Strength lies in anonymity
Be a shadow in the crowd
Until you speak and interact
When your voice will carry loud
You're a smart girl Emma
Wear this across your hair
Don't be subjugated by "man"-kind
An object of despair
To use your very words my friend
23Let your banner be unfurled
Don't blindly follow all around
DECLARE YOUR FREEDOM TO THE WORLD
