Far from the hustle of the campaign trail, in a patchwork town on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, Italy's Vanity Fair says they've tracked down Barack Obama's brother. He shares a father with Barack though not a mother. Living in a hut measuring six-by-nine feet, the 26-year-old named George Hussein Onyango Obama, survives on less than a dollar a month.
Plastering the walls of his hut are football posters and one front page newspaper clipping of Barack. This detail topped my heartbroke-list this morning: he says he's embarrassed by the poverty in which he lives and shies away from any Obama connection:
I live like a recluse, no one knows I exist. . . If anyone says something about my surname, I say we are not related. I am ashamed.
That makes my insides cry. To see a picture of George, read more.
George says he's met the Obama we know so well, twice — once as a young boy, and once when Sen. Obama visited Nairobi in 2006. George said it was like meeting a stranger — indeed George gets one brief mention in Barack's autobiography, described as a "beautiful boy with a rounded head." George has had a rough go of it, but is working on setting things right — he's starting classes at a local technical college.
Reading this, I can't help but be amazed. When Obama said, "he doesn’t look like the other presidents on the currency, he’s a got a funny name," stories like this bring that wealth of diversity he was talking about into focus. The US might have a president who has a brother who lives in a hut in Africa. Wow. Are you fascinated by this too?

I do find it fascinating. His background is certainly different than the average Americans.
That is one of the many reasons I consider him to be fundamentally un-American though.
1My co-worker just visited family in Canada. Is she un-American too?
2I don't really see how most presidential candidates have a life that an "average American" can relate to, popgoestheworld. John McCain was a fighter pilot and married an obsecenely rich model-esque woman. George W. Bush was a silver spoon kid with a former president for a dad. While those may be an American dream, it's probably not the norm.
3It is kind of funny because NPR had this story the other day that Cindy McCain has been calling herself an only child, and yet (gasp!) she has a half sister. Both stories are not that big of a deal, IMO.
4Absolutely Jill. Canada is foreign. Foreign is un-American.
And yeah, obviously most "average" Americans don't lead lives that end up with them running for president.
I wasn't making some big political statement there.
5I think being an "only child" has more to do with how you were raised, not with whom is biologically related to you.
This is a non-story to me. These two people are biologically related, but that seems like their only real connection.
6Cindy's half-sibling count is up to two now. I don't see the need for these stories.
7"These two people are biologically related, but that seems like their only real connection"
I agree.
8I hope Obama doesn't just use his brother's story/existence to promote himself or that the media doesn't dig too deeply along this line. If Obama doesn't have much beyond biology in common with his brother, and if his brother feels uncomfortable, I feel like his brother shouldn't be dragged into the spotlight by reporters looking for another story.
9>I don't really see how most presidential candidates have a life that an "average American" can relate to
Seriously. And I don't want them to be average. The average American is not the person I want in the White House. The candidates spend so much time trying to be a "man of the people." I think it's okay for us to have a President that's a little extraordinary.
Just my opinion.
10my question really is what does the family life of a candidate have to do with the person who's running and their views? i think that it's interesting to get a glimpse into their personal life but i think that the media makes too much out of things at times, and it skews our opinions. being a good or bad father/brother whatever isn't going to mean that you're necessarily going to be a good/bad leader for a country.
11It certainly puts a new fabric on the quilt.
I've got kin that live in mansions, huts, prison and asylums. Does that make me special too?
12strange development... but he's certainly not the only person to have multiple siblings from a father's various relationships.
13I am glad the press is respecting his desire to remove himself from the public arena.
14Hypno, you are special (in a good way, of course) on your own! No family connections needed!
15Interesting.
"I hope Obama doesn't just use his brother's story/existence to promote himself"
He hasn't so far. I doubt this will go anywhere--it's just one of those "slow candidate news day, let's dig up a random relative" stories.
I hope those classes work out for the brother. The few sentences I've read him speaking make him sound like a nice guy.
16*Sorry, I just realized it was Italian Vanity Fair, so not "slow candidate news day," more like "let's get another angle."
17Hmm, Joe Lieberman's going to speak at the RNC, that should give us something to talk about.
18lol, oh no Torg!
19That guy. Honestly.
20Sucks for George. However, I find nothing about Obama fascinating at all. He is an empty suit with no resume.
21He has an untraditional resume, but to say "no resume" is to ignore facts. For example, he was President of the Harvard Law review, an incredibly prestigious organization that 6 Supreme Court Justices have been members of. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
22For an empty suit with no resume, he seems to have done rather well for himself.
23Well it is an *expensive* empty suit
24ohh h*ll - the sh*it getting ready to hit the fan.
25http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/18/revealed.obama.chicago/index.html...
For these people who were living with asbestos, Obama was far more than an empty suit...
"It might have been small victories to the outside world, but to us, it was big. It meant those kids could get the jobs; they could buy things to start back to school," said Yvonne Lloyd, one of the residents Obama trained to lead lobbying efforts.
The small success gave residents something that would last a lot longer than a clean park or a job center. Residents said Obama gave them hope.
"We saw what could happen. We saw what can be done if the community has the resources and somebody to come in and train them. I'll always be grateful for that," Lloyd said
26Don't forget about the speech at the DNC.
27I had a comment get flagged.
I would sure love it if Team Sugar posted it!
28I'd love that too, Jill--can't wait to see what it says
29Organic, he as also done a lot of work helping communties, passing lobby reform legislation, health care reform in Illinois, Nuclear Non-Proliferation Legislation....the list really does go on and on for the people that honestly take time to research.
30Oh, I know. I'm just talking about his most important achievement.
31If that is what you think his most important achievement is, that is pretty interesting!
32I can't see how this helps Obama personally. And the Italian VF tracking his bro down hardly indicates that Obama is going to try to *use* his brother.
Seems more like VF is using him to sell mags.
And yeah, wow, that DNC speech. I mean, that alone qualifies him to be supreme dictator of the world. How people can't see that just blows my mind.
33Well it's between that and his extracurriculars in college.
34It is harder to play the simplistic game when you have an educated audience. Just a tip.
35
36"For example, he was President of the Harvard Law review" I think we're working with the same set of facts.
37Jill I'm not sure I'd bother responding to organic. I have yet to see evidence that he or she's interested in engaging in real conversation about the topics. The main goal seems to be to get a rise.
38I agree RCLdesigngirl. I'm sure he's well qualified for lots of jobs, but not this one. Was he on the Dean's List at Columbia as well? I think it's ironic that someone with close, known ties to terrorist Bill Ayers would even be considered for the job of Commander in Chief
39I just found out about this earlier today. What's puzzling me (I admit I need to read a lot more on this subject) is Obama helping his brother and family out financially, now. Because, if this is how he treats his family...imagine how he would treat us...the citizens in the U.S. I'm really surprised Democrats aren't speaking up on this matter...and I'm a laid back republican. (Hopefully, there is much more to this story.) I know if I had the money the Obama's have...I would definitely be helping out my loved ones (family & friends) if they needed it.
RCL, I agree with your comment.
40I guess I should clarify...that I don't understand why Obama didn't look for him.
41I mean he (Obama) knew of his existence (and from what I read...he did), wouldn't any person with half a heart try to find their half brother.
Oh, and oops...I didn't capitalize Republican in my first comment.
42BeachBarbie, Obama has a huge number of half brothers, and as stated, he's met this particular one twice in his life. We don't know anything about this guy or why he lives in poverty. What if Obama has given him money and he spent it on drugs? I think to jump to the conclusion that he'd treat the U.S. poorly based on this article is a bit of a leap.
In any case, as a Republican, wouldn't you want a president that didn't support welfare?
43I dont think that serving on a board with someone is having "close ties". I work with people on a regular basis that I don't agree with. When they first were introduced, it was when the incumbant Senator (who was no longer running for office) had a party at her house to introduce her supporters to Obama. It had nothing to do with Obama sharing ideas about terrorism with this guy.
If you are going to stretch that far to make a dig at Obama, then you probably had not intention of considering him anyway.
(Beachbarbie, your avtar is super cute, btw!)
44He is d*amned if he do or don't with some:
If he supports his brother - they will say he supports terrorism.
If he doesn't support - then how could he support the American people.
I can't wait to read the conspiracy theories.
45When did I say that?
46That was meant for another post. Sorry!
47Don't feed the troll...
48torgleson - who is a troll?
49Oh, yeah! I forgot that speech at the DNC 4 years ago. Groundbreaking stuff. I change my mind. He's totally qualified.
