Hey, I watched Joe Millionaire, I'm no reality TV snob, but crushing medical diagnoses? Is this entertainment? Millions of viewers will get to decide that for themselves when they watch British reality star Jade Goody find out she has cancer on the Indian version of the show Big Brother (called Bigg Boss.)
The 27-year-old star received the diagnosis that she had cervical cancer from her doctor and broke the news to her housemates, in tears of course, all on camera. Goody immediately quit the show but the event had already been caught on tape. She's since given her consent to have the footage shown, but is there a line?
While we certainly follow the health concerns of celebrities, at least with stories like Christina Applegate, she carefully chose how to break the news and certainly wasn't filmed at the time of finding out. Should reality TV be a free-for-all, as long as the participant agrees — or should we start policing what we deem entertainment with the long arm of the remote?

1If she'd already undergone tests, and went on the show anyway (knowing the results of her tests would be given to her while on the show), then obviously she'd know if she HAD cancer it would be taped. So I don't believe she was exploited. I think as long as we're watching the stuff, they're gonna keep making the stuff.
2Good for her! If she was ok with it then that is awesome; maybe it could be a powerful educational tool for those women who do not get their annual check ups.
As far as exploitation vs. entertainment goes, I can think of eight million worse examples than this case, so I have no idea how anyone could even construe this as such
3I think there is a lot more to come out on this story. Her PR man is livid it was not supposed to be all screened on TV. From what I understand she was told she was in the clear before she went to India.
4I'll go with the third option. I'm from the UK, this woman keeps doing Big Brother because the viewers eat it up. Shameful.

If they lied to her and told her the cameras were off though then it's shameful.
7i have to agree that it seems a lot of stuff is done for ratings - they have the ability to edit things out of a show - even if it's like big brother and they say that it's live - cause there's always a slight delay. i know that people like to watch and 'entertain' themselves on the lives of others - but there's really too much information at times that just isn't necessarily appropriate.
8It's Jade Goody - I'm not surprised. Yes bluesarahlou - she was accused of being a racist (along with the ever so clever Danielle Lloyd and what's-her-face from S Club 7) and bullying Shilpa Shetty on last year's BB - this trip to India was supposed to be her "come back." Apparently Shilpa set it up to help Jade rebuild her image.
9I think there are a lot of people out there who will stoop to ANY level to be on tv. They will exploit themselves, their families, their children, anything to get attention. I think it is very sad, but ultimately you can't save people from themselves.
I won't be their audience, though.
10Dont know much about this woman, but I think this seems more like REALITY tv than any other of that fake reality crap, i.e. Hills, etc. etc. etc.
11She gave consent for this footage to be aired so she obviously doesn't have a problem with it. I'm not a big fan of most reality TV and I think the idea that we have celebrities with no talent being famous and making money off reality tev is absurd. It's one thing for American Idols or ANTM to be famous, Lauren, Heidi and the likes of this girl, really who cares? They can exploit as much of their lives as they want, I'm still not going to watch cause I think it's silly.
